The two times I was in the UK on the 4th my British friends made major concessions to their usual program of taking the p--s out of the Yanks (which is part of the game). One year they actually condescended to root for the pathetic U.S. team in a soccer match (to no avail, they got smeared) while we downed pints and played pool. A year later my Yorkshire wench, who prided herself on taking the p--s out of Yanks better than anyone, roasted a turkey, and served watermelon on the 4th (a novel take on 4th tradition!). So, enough of this nationalism bilge. Things are bad enough without refighting every war since the Seven Years War!

Couldn't have been a real Euro. The cheerleaders are universal and even look like Euro-babes.

No no no - BBQ is a well established concept in UK.

It's the product of a UK BBQ that's a bit alien..

Speaking of hedgehogs, I was walking home drunk one night about 2am. Was a clear night in London even though I was definitely not clear. There in front of me, right in the middle of the sidewalk, was an odd gray ball about the size of a U.S. softball. I stopped and stared. I was just about to give it a huge kick for the hell of it when it suddenly occurred to me this was organic. Through a beery haze, I looked harder and saw the spines and realized I'd nearly whacked the subject of Isaiah Berlin's famous essay about the hedgehog and the fox. Had never seen one before. Learn something new every day.

What can I say, when we saw you dumping tea into Boston Harbour, we sort of knew that it was all over http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif.
On that note I used to know a barmaid a bar that myself and my mates go to after work, and she was American. On the last 4th of July we bought her a box of PG tips teabags and wrote on the gift tag "to be used for making tea, not for dumping into harbours". She was on the floor laughing because she could see that the p--s taking was a JOKE, there wan't any malice in it, it was just a joke. It's funny that you should mention Yorkshire because I could think of a list of stereotypes for Yorkshire people (short arms, deep pockets for instance).

By the way Happy Independence Day to our American friends http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif.

Taking the p-ss is part of the game. You learn that in 15 minutes. If you don't like it, you go back early. My favorite retort to jibes about the U.S. was a dismissive "A clear case of empire envy" which usually put an end to that. The odd thing is that there is so much malice in the Brit on Yank raillery in this forum---none of which I ever experienced face-to-face in the UK. The primary oddity I encountered was the assumption that Americans all lived the way we were depicted in garbage Hollywood films, i.e., we all lived in huge houses, we all drove fleets of huge cars, and our women looked like Meg Ryan. It used to kill me.

It used to kill me. You should see us take the p--s out of other Brits. I work with quite a few people from different parts of the North West, mostly Scousers and Mancs and you should witness the jibes that they get. The Scousers mostly get ribbed because of the stereotype that they steal things. For example one of my co worker's sons is into "free running" and one of the managers joked that "Free running was created in Liverpool by teenagers, but they usually ran with TVs and video recorders under their arms". Mancs get some stick because according to the Lab Manager (a scouser) "they are jealous of Liverpool, because they didn't have the Beatles". I'm not saying that taking the mick out of someone because of where they come from is right, I'm just saying that is doesn't only happen to Americans, but other Brits too.
P.S. I am thankful to this forum because it allows me to talk to people from other nations, it provides great insight into the lives of the "everyday joes" in other countries.

I had a Mancunian pal named Judith Belch. She was about 25 and was a steel trader in the City. Taught me all about blue steel. Her surname was her constant martyrdom. She had a degree from Cambridge and was a sensitive, artistic type, but she was working amongst tough, bare knuckles traders. They latched onto her name and tormented her constantly. She vowed she was going to change her surname.

The Fourth has never been a Nuremburg Part Rally. Sure, there is the parade, and in the old days everybody took off their hats and stood still for the passing of the flag, but it mainly was about rodeos, picnics, fireworks, and celebrating. Nobody strutted around barking nationalistic shibboleths. All this nationalistic tosh on the forum is weird. It's not part of any world I've seen. It's the internet hothouse gone berserk yet again.

The porcupines aren't hedgehogs, they're a sort of spiny hamster (a rodent). They have a slightly nutty taste, not at all like the spicy tasting hedgehog, which is a sort of overblown up shrew.
