I'm hoping somebody has a final solution as to how to fix a sudden technical problem I'm having with my XP home system:

Last week my Sidewinder Precision Pro 2 joystick suddenly stopped working. I can't activate it with the Game Controller area in Control Panel; attempting to enable the "Sidewinder (Auto Detect)" preset results in a prompt stating that my Gameport is not configured properly ... which is odd because Sidewinder is a plug-n-play USB device.

I tried messing with the CD that came with the stick, and installing the program on it did nothing. I've restarted my system without the device plugged in and that didn't help. I've tried all the USB ports and that doesn't do it, even though the USBs are active and the keyboard works fine if I plug it into any of the USB ports. I haven't tried other gaming controllers yet as I don't have any immediately available.

Anybody have any ideas how I can make the system recognize the Sidewinder stick again? I've been using it without problem since around Christmas.

Here's a Tech thread I found where other people are having similar problems, and the final verdict is that there isn't a known solution: http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/66/lev3/68/pid/750/qid/626046 . Hopefully somebody at this forum has a better insight.

Call me stoopid, but how does one clean the registry?

"Search" in Windows Help doesn't answer this.

Just had the same thing happen with my sidewinder freestyle pro controller. Hat switch was not being recognised in FB. But works fine in every other game tried in.
Finally gave up and bought a new one. Works fine. Plugged my old one back in after testing the new one and the old one works fine now also.

Microsoft is the spawn of satan...I am convinced of this....

If you have a via chipset based motherboard, then a patch for MS joysticks, in particlular MS force feedback joysticks, can be found on the sidewinder MS website. My FF2 was unrecognisable by forgotten battles, but this patch cleared it right up and i've never had the trouble again.

is it a FFB stick ?

MS FFB sticks seem to draw a lot of current from the USB bus, enought to cause trouble when used with trackir (another high current USB device)on the same bus

it its a FFB perhaps that is connected with the problem

My tastatur-board did not worked for me last week, I tried everything but still no result.

I restarted my computer and when the pc was in the starting-process I put the cable in the opening and it worked fine again.

This may not work with your problem but give it a try.

Sometimes it can help to reset your BIOS if the machine is not recognising a piece of hardware.

Its caused by a static buildup in the joystick. If you look around on MDSN it's in there somewhere. The usual fix is to power down you pc, unplug the stick, power up the pc, power down the pc, plug the stick back in and power up the pc... basically gives static a chance to discharge....

I know it sounds crazy but its true!

Beat me to it!

They did say power down and plug it into another usb port then back into the original and power up again.

If you have only one port plug/unplug 'six to twelve' times! LOL. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Only M$ could come up with that!

If you are using MS stick - and windows XP - it is not recomended to use the software. XP has full support for all MS sticks.

Also - if you are using a usb hub - you may try removing Stick from hub and go straight to pc - one more thing - if you have recently plugged a new device or removed a usb deviceb - double check you controller assignments, you may need to reassign stick in IL2 and device number might have changed

It's fixed now. The "Unplug joystick --> Power down computer --> Power up computer --> Power down computer --> Power up computer --> Plug in joystick" trick was the solution.

Thanks. You guys are brilliant!
