After a couple of quick missions against J8As and other early war planes, I've come to really enjoy flying this. It turns well, is fairly stable as long as you don't put in into a high AoA and has very nice visability from the cockpit. Overheating isn't much of a problem with it as long as your carefull.

The only thing I can say bad about it is its speed. But thats to expect with a weak engine, fixed undercarraige and early war materials.

It is inferior machine to its contemporary VVS oppos.
But it is sweet to fly nonetheless...
It can really hurt VVS bombers, while against human manned VVS oppos it stands no chance.

It's a good match for I-16s (not the type 24 though)and I-15, I-153. I can catch up to Db-3 and SB-2 just fine if I climb, then dive, climb and dive. That, or follow them all the way to base where they start landing (as some Finnish did) If you get lucky and score hits in the engine, then in time you will catch it.

That it has no prop-pitch is a serious compromise to its performance I bet. Just over-rich and you will be fine in terms of overheating.

It's a real joy to fly and has awesome handling qualities. Just not the best for a fighter.

BTW, any info on whether the other versions in the game have different engines or a controllable pitch prop? Sarja 4 version seems like a totally redesigned version. And the Danish one has 20 mm guns.

Were the D.XXIs ever used against the Japanese?

The D.XXI was originally designed to meet an NEI specification, and the prototype was actually sent to Java for testing, receiving the ML registration FD-322. However, the ML rejected it (presumably in part because the available funds were used to purchase Glenn Martin bombers). What happened to the prototype afterwards is unknown- some sources state that it was returned to Holland, and sold to the Spanish Republican government. Other sources claim that it was stored at Andir and destroyed there during a Japanese air raid in February 1942- a story I consider unlikely for the simple reason that, if it had remained in the NEI, the ML would have pressed it into service given their shortage of aircraft in 1942. However, there is no record at all of this having been done. Yet another sorce claims that it eventually became one of the D.XXIs to enter service with the LVA (Army Air Arm) in Holland- but its construction number does not match the numbers given to any of the LVA D.XXIs. In short, a mystery.

On paper, the D.XXI should be a close match to the Ki.27- the Ki is more manoeuverable and has a better climb rate, the D.XXI has more firepower, is more ruggedly built and can outdive the Ki. Top speeds of the Otsu and Dutch D.XXI should be roughly equal. So far I have been unable to shoot down a Ki.27 with the D.XXI, but have been able to down the D.XXI with the Otsu.

A few comments: (1)the ML received twelve Hurricane IIBs on loan from the RAF in February 1942, not Mk.Is; these had been modified to IIA spec by removing the outer pairs of .303s, giving an armament of eight .303s, in an attempt to improve the Hurricane's overall performance. As far as I know no Mk.Is were used by RAF or ML in the defence of Malaya/Singapore/NEI. (2)Only some of the Do-24s were built in Germany, most being licence-built in Holland by Aviolanda in Papendrecht. (3)Four subtypes of the Glenn Martin bomber were used by the ML: WH-1, WH-2, WH-3 and WH-3A. (4)The name "Demon" was not used by the ML, the CW-21B was known as the "Interceptor" in the NEI.

I cant shoot down the KI with the fokker either. The Ki27 is too fast in speed, turning and pretty much everything else. I was using the early Fokker too though if that makes a difference
