I have come back to IL2 after purchasing FB. I will say that FB is a great improvement over original IL2 (gotta love the dynamic campaign--what I wanted originally).
So I was just wondering if its worth downloading the patches for original IL2?
I live in the country so we have no broadband here,so its gonna take time to get the 75meg patch. The other thing is that I used to play IL2 online using 56k, and it played good most of the time. I am thinking that with FB and its 1meg skins, its going to be unbearable on 56k? Not tried yet, but how is it with 56k?

Cheers

The netcode in FB is supposed to be improved. U have to wait for others to acknowledge that though as I don't fly online much.

In latest patch u can disable downloading of skins (not only uploading).

With 1 person in a room with 56k its not bad but as far as more then that it makes the game almost unplayable for everyone. So sure get the patches.

And most rooms have auto kicks enabled forto high of pings which helps out a great deal.

On other thing and i use cable set your connection speed to the lowest setting. Dont know how this helps but it does

I do. Or to put it better, I bought the IL2 a month ago, and I'm still playing the camapaign offline. Is FB worth your money?

BTW, there are like thousands of patches to IL2. Which one should I download for the box version?

Thanks,
Ivan

i do. i bought it about 4 months ago and play when ever i get the chance (wife not looking/busy/kids asleep etc) becaue of its reputation. i have not been disapointed. i have played online only once, i still do not think that i am a good enough pilot yet. i played on ubi with a 56k dial-up it was only a small room, not many players and i did not notice any difference from playing off line, except that i kept getting shot down whilst trying to take off until i managed to scramble into the air as soon as possible any way i could. brilliant game. no plan to buy fb....yet.

Actually un-installed IL-2 yesterday and am concentrating 'just' on FB. Don't have enough time to play both /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

If you aren't going to play it online, no real need for the full patch. I think the first patch they came out with had some fixes for the sound and maybe something else. But if you are playing it offline and you have no probs with it, I wouldn't waste time downloading patches.

As far as 56k online play with FB, there are many I fly with that have 56k connections and have no probs. One even hosts some coops and it runs real smooth. The probs people think 56k causes is lagg. I haven't found that to be true. It's actually packet loss between the hosts computer and yours. A lot of that depends on the distance between where you are and where they are. I am on cable. I test my connection through a program I have. It pings computers all over the US and over seas. I have extreme packet loss when pinging a computer in Europe. I live on the east coast of the US, my squadmate with the 56k connection lives on the west coast of US. Lag and packet loss in minimal whether he is hosting or whether I am hosting. That's about 3000 miles between computers. And I'm not the only one he is hosting. He hosts up to 5 players on his 56k connection. I said all of that to say this. Don't let your internet connection speed keep you from flying online, if that is what you want to do. S!

Yea, I do, I suggest the patches esp. the last 1.02 because you get quite a few add-on planes with it. I will probably get IL2:Fb early next year, I always lag behind a bit (no pun intended) with games.

I played IL2:Original quite a bit until just recently (I had trouble with FB for a number of months until I finally took the time to find the right mix of sound and graphics drivers to use with DirectX 8.1). I am now enjoying FB online and, especially, offline in QMB missions.

To me, even though I am not a pilot, the IL2:Original flight model (FM) was more "edgy", and seemed to better simulate the instability inherent in high wing-loading fighters. Should you decide to patch the IL-2 software, you will want to make sure you have a good joystick to fly the early patches; joystick sensitivity tweaking is a must as that earlier FM is much more responsive than in later patches. With the final IL2 patch (version 1.2) any old joystick will do--I was and am still using an analog joystick with FB since my Microsoft j/s stopped working.

I play IL2 only when a friend expresses interest. I use as a cheap way to introduce them to the world of Oleg Maddox. In its patched state it is fairly trouble free and uses less system resources.

Kind of like the crack dealer, once they've tried it, I tell them to go get FB and do a few PC upgrades to handle the extra resource requirements. Then they're hooked. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hi

I currently use a MS FFB2. To be honest I am not that fussed with FF..I find that it really puts me off a good shot and I am not that good a flyer as well as having to compensate for those rebounds...

So I am selling my FFB2 (anyone care to make me an offer feel free to mail me..its really hardly been used) and getting an X-45 (the amount of buttons and good reviews make it seem a better choice, plus its only 60 on dabs.com).

I think if the above posters are correct, I will give FB a shot on my 56k connection, although I am having great fun with the dynamic campaign at the moment! The thing I like about playing original IL2 online was looking at other peoples skins in the cache afterwards...so the thought of downloading multiple 1meg skins really put me off!

Cheers for your replies ppl...(and dont forget my FFB2 offer..nospam).

Kevin

I play on 56k and I have been in room with 15 people and there is no lag at all.

I only play offline now. The original is far better. Dogfights with ace-level AI can last a long, long time (like 10 minutes+ in certain one-on-one situations, 30 minutes+ in larger scenarios). In FB, a huge QMB dogfight can be over with in under three minutes, with half the planes destroyed at the first pass.

I never downloaded the FB patch, but I have found the FB flight model to be arcadish.

I most certainly do play original Il2! I've barely scratched the surface of it (I don't get much flying time /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif ). Plus there's no way my computer could cope with FB. I've having fun with Il2 though so I'm happy. But when I see screenshots of the Spitfire, I get jealous!

Errr, well yes, I do but hehe that's because i just aquired it when I bought my latest addition to my flight controllers, a CH combatstick, & pro throttle. So im new to IL-2, but not new to flight sims as I have been flying all sorts of them since my first one in 1998(Flight unlimited 3). I have been hooked on them ever since and have uhhh, lets see I'll have to do an inventory here uhhh,
Flight unlimited 3
FS2000
FS2002
FS2004
Falcon 4.0
CFS1
CFS2
Janes WWII Fighters
B-17 Flying Fortress
F-16 Multirole fighter
Janes F-15
Fly2K
IL-2
My flight control deck consist's of all CH products stuff(I believe in them, their the best!) Yoke, rudder pedals, pro throttle, & combatstick. Well so far IL-2 looks pretty good, tho I must say that in my experience as far as areial combat goes there's nothing that has been able to beat Falcon 4.0, especially since some fine folks came up with the SP3 upgrade for it,..........simply awesome!!
However as i said IL-2 seems like a solid combat sim, and am happy to have it, and after playing it a month or two i'll probably get IL-2 FB as well, heck i got everything else,LOL! But the truth is im just as crazy about WW2 as can be and am pleased to have one based on the Russian side of things, havent been many if at all that I have seen.
Well, here's lead in yer eye,.....till then I hope to shoot off yer tail soon http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif LOL!
And hey, it's nice to be herehttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have noticed that most of the missions are over pretty quick, wheras I remember in IL2 that they did seem to last longer....
Cant comment on flight model, the I-16 seems ok, getting plenty of engine drop outs if I suddenly nose down...I can understand why 1C would dumb down the flight model considering the praise they got for IL2? Is this true?

I certainly do, I feel that it has more accurate flight physics (at least in the aircraft that I fly) and it also runs without the additional stutter of FB online

I still do. Got quite a few Barbarossa campaigns left. And with the 1.2 patch I can fly a Stuka! What else does a normal healthy person with a family and a full time job and music as a hobby need? The only thing in FB that sounds nice are the dynamic campaigns. But I am eagerly awaiting the Battle of Britain release...looking forward to massacre all those nasty nazi planes in a shining polished aluminium Spitfire!!! Have to reread my Biggles books...Tally ho!

I played a mission in IL2 last night after a long time in FB. I must say that the flight model in the Yak 3 seems more complex in FB. Much easier to provoke a power stall. Still, just an impression.

I'm still working my way through the campaigns, although I got all the patches and the AI has way more capability most of the time, it seems, altho I may just be that bad a pilot.

If you want to patch your version, I'm sure that a number of people on this board have them on disk, and at least a few are in the UK and can burn copies and post them to you via snail mail. Just ask, the community is very generous, unless you flame their favorite aircraft.
