Professor-

You have a lot of questions. Although, on the surface, I seriously consider the possibility that you were once a known member here, I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and suggest this link:

You constantly search for answers in the two days you've been here, and ask many questions. The advanced forum search is a very good start

In regards to your initial question, maps are difficult and time consuming to make for this sim, and are not 100% accurate. Many places have been left off of many maps. The pros and cons of each locale was undoubtably weighed; and given it's pros and cons were either accepted or rejected

Many people feel that the "essential" location of their particular wants or needs have been overlooked. This sim has really pushed it's envelope; it is not a new game engine, and there are limitations

Good Evening professor,
I ran into the same problem with my campaign that is currently under construction. After more research, I found this not to be a problem at all. Here's why. I have a National Geographic CD ROM with war maps. One day when I was looking for Lae on the game map, I couldn't find it, so I looked on my CD. Lae is roughly the same distance from Buna as Buna is from Port Moresby. This means that if you were to escort a flight of Type 1 (Betty) bombers to PM, It would take you about 30 min.(at 350km/h) to reach Buna. Then it would take you a further 30 min to reach PM with your bombers (at their speed). I made a compromise by launching my Zero missions from the Buna area and calling it Lae in the briefing. My missions are visually impressive, the combat is thrilling, and still without time compression, the missions to PM and back are aproximately 80 min. in length.

I still want Lae. And Salamaua. And Wewak. And Hollandia.

We are getting an area of Burma, a Norway map, and a fictional "Italian coast" map. I doubt that any others will be in teh offing before Bob is released and we all drop FB/AEP/PF like a hot potato for the new sim.

Chuck gives the "company boy" answer. A more sober and frank answer to this question is:

The team knew very little about the Pacific when they made PF, and it shows most evidently in the map selection. How can you NOT have a map that has both Port Moresby and Lae on it, at a minimum? How can you NOT have Rabaul and Bougainville?

Only if you are totally and woefully ignorant of the Pacific would you leave that out.

Clearly, the very flavor of the Pacific (wide expanses, supply and support of troops being HUGE issues, and forcing the strategies of the combatants) was totally missed; in fact, since IL-2 was originally designed for the Russian campaign (with relatively short distances between airfields and the front), it needed some game-level design modifications if it hoped to capture the flavor of the Pacific. It failed badly.

Exact, but Lae is Lae http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Stigler is probably right, however, can you imagine the royal FUBAR that would be an American company trying to model the Russian front? It would more than likely be filled with lots of mistakes.

I still know far far less about the Eastern Front than the PTO, but if I were starting from scratch on a sim version, I'd hit the the community. A few questions throw out here would result in all kinds of data, even airfield images...

point taken, Tater....

BTW, has anyone heard anything else of the proposed Luzon Map?

IMO Ianboys is doing great things w/ Burma ,Norway and Slovakia. I'm not sure what "New Tricks" they've got worked out, but the development screenies look outta sight http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
