View Full Version : Cartrix versus Stormin - sorry Cartrix ;)

As veterans remember, Cartrix was eased into some cool roles at UBI alongside of Stormin. Stormin made sure we were all aware that Cartrix was here to stay.

Since then, Cartrix has replaced the now departed Stormin and the community no longer has that cool feeling that "The Big Man" is somewhere in our ranks. I know Cartrix is/was on vacation but even when he's not away, he rarely shows up in here. I miss Stormin, or at least the feeling that we have a leader in our ranks.

Someone to put us in our place, someone to share good news, and someone to go to bat for us on some issues if the need arises.

I recall a thread long long ago where we were all whining about a lack of info on an IL2 patch. We'd waited forever and it just started to look bad on UBI to be so tight-lipped. The natives (us) were getting restless and all we wanted was a date, date range, or some form of hope that things were en route. Stormin eventually agreed with us and so gave us a SOLID date we could depend on. Sure, it was a few weeks out but at least we had something to mark on our calendars, and hey, it was something for the UBI testers to watch too, right? It was an example of a community leader serving the community, and yet another example of how Stormin earned our respect.

The point I'm trying to make? Well, this IS a community. This community IS getting restless, and the leadership of this community appears to be in the form of Moderators, most of which are not able to comment on the status of things as a real community leader should/could. Moderators shouldn't even have to comment anyways.

So Cartrix, with all the respect I have for you, I'd still ask of you that you think of the community a little more, be involved in it, and help us to feel that UBI cares at least a bit about the fact that we're dying to get our next instalment/fix for such a great sim - FB, the reason this community exists at all.

Thanks,
Dex

As much as I hate to admit it I agree. In the time before FB came out there was much hustle and bustle around here. Now we're pushing almost a month without even 1 news article, much less a development update. Seems as though UBI has been abandoned as far as for Oleg / 1C goes.

Not whining folks...just stating an opinion / facts. I and the TXSquadron whole heartedly support this game and the folks who play it.

Big fat bump.

Good post, Dex.
You were a lot more polite than I would be.
I hope you get further than I did. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I have made a number of civil posts in the past in order to convince UBI of the value of community and to encourage community leadership from Cartrix.
(I even defended Cartrix when the mob was attacking him a few months ago.

The results from my civil diatribes have been exactly ZERO.

I am left to conclude that UBI does not give a rat's a$$ about this community (no update for over a month?) and Cartrix feels the same.

Oleg built a superior product and UBI is flushing it in the toilet through abyssmal and unacceptable customer relations management.

Bring back Stormin' and save our souls.

Gotta bump this one. This is a sad situation indeed. Checking out the news and talk on the furum used to be something I looked forward to back in the good old il2 days. Now I just get disapointed. No news, no fun, no nothing. Personally I think Oleg, 1C and us users in the community deserve more.

TaZ, I wasn't dumping on Cartrix but rather sharing an opinion on how things once were versus how they now are. Even you can admit that it's now different for the worse. All the people "BooHooing" as you put it are not wrong, IMO.

As an aside, why do you always have to come into threads with a contrarian opinion, just for the sake of having a contrarian opinion, and through sharing of this contrarian opinion you manage to add nothing to the conversation but a loose, empty contrarian opinion, thereby just irritating people in a way that leaves them thinking "who is this holy can't-we'all-just-get-along minister, and what the heck is he drinking". Just wondering.

PS GREAT job keeping up those horribly time consuming Friday updates. They were obviously disproportionate in their benefit to the rest of the community versus someone actually posting a screenshot.

This would be a very interesting allegation, were it to be true. I too, feel that Cartrix has given everything that one could expect from his postion. Norman, he is long gone and I think that today the forum is a better place because of it. But then again, maybe it is just because of the off topic forum being gone, or the patch taking too long, who knows.

Pardon the stump speech, but...

Just to set the record straight:

1. Ian Chambers aka Cartrix is an employee of Ubi Soft who was hired to be the Community Manager for several of the online forums representing products. I have had nothing but respect for him and he has never given me any reason to not trust him or think poorly of him. He has always been a professional. The notion that there is or was any ill will between us is complete nonsense and anyone stating otherwise is uninformed and just plain wrong.

2. He was hired at a time when I was working for Ubi Soft as an Executive Producer. My job was managing software development projects, simulations to be specific. He is not involved in the development, design, testing, or planning for any of the software projects. He did not report to me and I did not report to him. We coordinated and worked together.

3. When the IL-2 product line was assigned to me I started to participate in the online community here in this forum. I have been a member of the online and simulation community since the days of the forums on CompuServe, GEnie, and Prodigy in the mid-1980s.

4. There was little or no participation by anyone from Ubi Soft prior. Matt Wagner, who worked for me as a Producer at Ubi Soft, and myself came online to begin to interact with the IL-2 community within a week of our being assigned to manage the product line.

5. The posting by FortressKiller is by none other than Peter Webber aka Siggi and about a dozen other screen names. He is a person who has been repeatedly banned from this and just about every other simulation forum on the Internet. He believes he is above any rules or forum policies and therefore comes back using multiple personas. He doesn't like me and I am pleased to return the sentiment. He is incorrect about me being "fired". His ignorance is further reflected by his statement about Cartrix taking over my responsibilities. Ian's duties have not changed since I left Ubi Soft last year. He is also incorrect about my wearing a suit, I never wore a suit while working for Ubi Soft except to attend my grandfather's funeral. I worked on software projects, planned products, assisted in new business efforts, and coordinated with other departments in the company. I did't live in luxury or drive in limos.

6. The speculation about Oleg's first choice and the situation with Ubi and/or Codemasters that one of you posted here is not very accurate. I've heard much different and I know all the players. Please don't speculate when you don't have the facts.

7. Cartrix and his mods are in a no win situation. This community can be wonderful, but it is also demanding, mean-spirited at times, and impossible to satisfy. Many of you blame Ian and the staff for things that they have absolutely no control over. They could easily air dirty laundry about corporate decisions or about managment above them but they don't because they are professionals. Many of you just want a pound of flesh and a flame war. How sad. Closing the Pilot Lounge was a difficult decision I am sure, but it really did get out of control and there was little anyone could have done about it. The same thing happened a couple years ago on the Flanker forum and I made the decsion to shut down the OT Politics and Flame section. Software companies really are not interested in providing you with open venues at their expense to discuss things other than their products. It is understandable. The fact that there is a new unofficial pilots lounge is great news. I actually go there from time to time myself. It's like walking into a rowdy pub. Not for the timid, but very entertaining. Such a thing is not and should not be associated with a software publisher. So, good news on the new forum.

8. I did not and do not always agree with much of what Ubi Soft did or is doing, but they are just like any company in this industry. They are trying to make a buck. Sadly, combat simulations are not the primary means to make that buck. While this is a very active and spirited community, it is a niche market. A niche market is not always a priority and I know that is difficult for some of you to accept, but thems the facts. Ubi is just like most of the industry, simulations are just not the priority.

9. When I was on this forum in an official capacity as an employee of Ubi Soft I always tried to be a pro and act responsible. I'm human and admit there were and are time when I got into it with some of you. My tolerance for people who disrupt forums or feel that the rules did not apply to them was and still is low. But in the end I have and continue to provide direct answers and attempt to be a helpful contributor to our online community. I can call many of you my friends which is something I value. I don't really have any enemies. There are some of you I just don't care for and I am sure you feel the same. So be it, but I really don't wish you ill. And Petey Webber, don't bother because I have no desire to get into it with you and will ignore you.

10. I now work with The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics. I participate in the development of Lock On: Modern Air Combat and I am working on several other projects that are in the early phases of business development. Ubi Soft is the publisher of Lock On and my duties have me working with Matt Wagner and some other Ubi Soft people. We work well together and share a common goal, to produce a good product with Lock On.

11. Rumors that Oleg or 1C have "signed up" with me or my "start-up company" are untrue. There is no start-up company. I work for TFC and Eagle. We are going to develop new products. I would like to work with Oleg and his crew again, but that is not going to be something that happens in the near future, but who knows, maybe someday?

12. That's all I really want to say. I apologize for the long-winded speech.

Cheers,
Carl

- Just to set the record straight:
-
- 1. Ian Chambers aka Cartrix is an employee of Ubi
- Soft who was hired to be the Community Manager for
- several of the online forums representing products.
- I have had nothing but respect for him and he has
- never given me any reason to not trust him or think
- poorly of him. He has always been a professional.
- The notion that there is or was any ill will between
- us is complete nonsense and anyone stating otherwise
- is uninformed and just plain wrong.
-
-
- 2. He was hired at a time when I was working for
- Ubi Soft as an Executive Producer. My job was
- managing software development projects, simulations
- to be specific. He is not involved in the
- development, design, testing, or planning for any of
- the software projects. He did not report to me and
- I did not report to him. We coordinated and worked
- together.
-
- 3. When the IL-2 product line was assigned to me I

- and simulation community since the days of the
- forums on CompuServe, GEnie, and Prodigy in the
- mid-1980s.
-
- 4. There was little or no participation by anyone
- from Ubi Soft prior. Matt Wagner, who worked for me
- as a Producer at Ubi Soft, and myself came online to
- begin to interact with the IL-2 community within a
- week of our being assigned to manage the product

- 5. The posting by FortressKiller is by none other

- he is above any rules or forum policies and
- therefore comes back using multiple personas. He
- doesn't like me and I am pleased to return the
- sentiment. He is incorrect about me being "fired".
- His ignorance is further reflected by his statement
- about Cartrix taking over my responsibilities.
- Ian's duties have not changed since I left Ubi Soft
- last year. He is also incorrect about my wearing a
- suit, I never wore a suit while working for Ubi Soft
- except to attend my grandfather's funeral. I worked
- on software projects, planned products, assisted in
- new business efforts, and coordinated with other
- departments in the company. I did't live in luxury
- or drive in limos.
-
- 6. The speculation about Oleg's first choice and the
