Question 1: What genre is Pacific Storm, and what projects are similar in spirit? What are the features of the game?

Pacific Storm is similar to Total War, but it is set on the stage of war in the Pacific, and it is all happening in real time (like Hearts of Iron).

Pacific Storm €" is a large scale two-level historical strategy game in real time. It has traits of a global strategy, tactics and a flight sim, and is dedicated to the battles of the Pacific during World War II. The player may choose sides in the war as Japanese or United States, and participate in massive military operations of the combined aviation and navy forces. The time period is limited from 1940 to 1948. The player may develop new technologies, gain access to new armaments and even change history. Our game combining three genres (strategy, tactics, and flight simulator) allows a great freedom to the player in making strategic and tactical decisions, along with the ability to instantly €œpossess€ any of his subordinate units and personally participate in combat. The depth and scale of strategic mode, intricate tactical mode and dynamic simulator make up the gameplay of Pacific Storm.

The main features of the game:
€ Combination of three genres (strategy, tactics, flight sim) in the same project
€ Grand scale air and naval battles on the Pacific from 1940 to 1948
€ Player is able to alter history as the global campaign progresses
€ A broad choice of historical scenarios with real, exact conditions
€ Units gather experience in combat and training
€ Graphics completely in 3D
€ Ability to develop new types of units, new technology €" from increasing power of aviation engines to guided missiles, biological weapons and the atomic bomb.

The secondary features of the game:
€ The weather (fog, storm, rain) affects combat on the strategic map
€ Strategic game map of Pacific ocean, containing Japan, Australia, west coast of North America, Oceania and partly, India
€ Simple and intuitive controls in strategic mode, allowing the development of naval bases, fleet action planning and fuel supply lines.
€ Rich choice of settings to manage game time (slow-mo, fast-forward, intelligent pause)
€ Creation of new naval bases in mid-game
€ Reconnaissance using planes, ships and radars.

Question 2: What can be done on a global map? What is the strategic mode of the game?

Strategic level of the game plays in real-time. To make it more convenient to the user, there are multiple speeds of time flow, allowing time to €œthink clearly€ to make decisions, and to €œspeed things up€, if the player€s involvement is not necessary.

Visually, the strategic level is a map of the Pacific ocean, divided into 127 areas, each of which has a corresponding three-dimensional tactical map. In order to win the game, the player can and should do the following on the strategic map:
1. Build naval bases and different structures in them.
2. Build ships and planes, create formations (according to historical numbers and organization), direct movements of these formations on the map.
3. Direct new research.
4. Edit units to make new modifications (!)
5. Direct assignment and movement of characters in the game (!)
6. Battle with enemy formations (fleets) and assault enemy bases in auto-battle mode, that is, without manually directing ships and planes.
7. Get orders and recommendations (like €œquests€) from the government of the chosen nation: Japan or USA.
8. Direct development of economic communications and transportation of resources.

Question 3: How is the flight simulator integrated into Pacific Storm?

The flight simulator mode allows the player to directly control ANY TYPE OF PLANE IN THE GAME as its pilot or one of the gunners during tactical battles, if there were gunners in the modification of the plane.

The controls in the flight sim are simplified in the best sense of the word.

After selecting any of the planes flying about the tactical map and €œpossessing€ it, you can control it from a third person view (camera behind the plane), or choose a view from the inside of the cockpit, and see the world through the glass of the canopy (and the sights, of course).

Simulator mode is not necessary to be used to win the game, but adds to the diversity of the gameplay, mixing in some adrenaline to the heavy battles of giant lumbering ships by allowing the player to personally experience what it€s like to be one of the hundreds and thousands he€s used to throw at the enemy without doubts or regrets.

Yet the simulator mode can change history, if the player is able to swoop past the flak and defensive fire to dive and drop the single heavy bomb that turns a huge ship into a pillar of fire. There is a possibility of that, but I have to warn you, destroying a ship with just one bomb or one artillery shell can be done only with a lot of luck€¦

Question 4: What types of game are included in Pacific Storm?

The main attraction in Pacific Storm is composed of the two global campaigns, including all tactical maps and elements, for the USA and Japan, beginning January 1st, 1940 and until the victory!

The difference between the FREE and the HISTORICAL campaign is in the initial balance of the forces on the map and the inclusion of the direct orders from the governments of Japan and US during the war.

These campaigns allow the player to become the commander-in-chief of the Navy and Air Force of the chosen nation, direct the development of science and economy, construction and war.

Beside the global campaign, the game includes a number of historical military missions, corresponding to the famous and important battles of the Pacific war, such as the attack on Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway, Battle of Guadalcanal, Battle of Leytµ Gulf, Okinawa, and so on.

Deployment mode deserves a separate mention: it€s a nifty program, that allows the player to set up own battles with ANY type of force composition on ANY of the game maps, and hone one€s skills of admiral or combat pilot, however long that takes.

Question 5: How does research of new technologies and units work in the game?

It€s a classic technology tree of interconnected technologies. The discoveries unlock new types of weapons and devices for already existing units, increase their combat parameters.

Each technology demands for its development either too much money or way too much money. Also, the difference in the amount of dollars or yen spent on a new technology affects the speed of research, and to this effect there€s a special slider, which allows a rich naval commander to get new planes, radars, sonars and torpedoes faster.

Question 6: The game will have resources. What are they used for?

Types of resources and their uses are relate perfectly to history.
€œOil €" that€s blood of the new war.€
The user can gain from controlled territories:
1. oil
2. iron
3. aluminum
4. money (in form of taxes and collections, but no tax police are involved: money is gathered automatically)

The amount of money depends on the population in the area and the level of economic development. Money is immediately placed in the government€s budget. The other three resources are also automatically gathered, after proper infrastructure is built on the navy bases, but they remain in the warehouses of such bases and must be transported to the main land by sea to be used, because you can only build units in the main land (Japanese islands or west coast of US).

Resources, as follows from their names, are required to build ships and airplanes, naval base construction and upgrades, and repairs of everything.

Question 7: How do unit upgrades work? Are they historically accurate?

They are absolutely accurate.

The upgrade system in Pacific storm is deep enough to allow for a €˜Unit Editor€ in game, which is used to install and replace armaments and devices on the planes and on the ships, thus making special modifications to be saved, so your naval yards and aviation constructors can use them like blueprints to mass produce the exact model to YOUR specifications.

The number of different types of accessories and devices that can be installed on your units depends on the technological development of your nation.

Question 8: Is there a critical point-based system of ship damage?

The system of ship and airplane damage is a symbiosis between all-too-familiar health bar and critical points, which cause specific system or engine failure. I WILL BE ABLE TO TELL MORE ABOUT THE DAMAGE SYSTEM after its development is complete.

There€s a hit generator, which computes the possibility of the ship receiving critical damage after a single bomb or torpedo strike, but just like in real life, the possibility is slim. Although, always, one has to believe in luck!

Question 9: What are the characters in the game like? Are they like general in Total War series? Are they real historical figures?

The player will have 60 Japanese and American navy officers and pilots in his disposal. They€ll have a number of parameters.
Assigning them to the posts of naval and air force commanders brings a number of bonuses to their subordinates, and is thus highly recommended.
Characters, just like real people, are mortal, so death of a military genius, whether yours or enemy€s, is always an important event.

Question 10: How much will the virtual governments of US or Japan control the actions of the player?

The player€s freedom was a priority for the developers, as far as the question of his participation in the military affairs of his government is concerned.

Advice and recommendations about strategic planning, development of technologies and conducting military operations are used, first of all, to help the player orient in the enormous space of the strategic map and help quickly get used to the role of the commander-in-chief of one of the most powerful fleets in the world.

Performing the government€s requests leads to rewards (extra resources, increased unit parameters), and failing to comply would likewise punish the player.

QUESTION 11: What is resource management in PacificStorm? Is it similar to trade system?

- Fortunately you have no need to trade. In order to supply plants and factories situated in the major economic and production centers with the necessary resources you need to use sea transport to transfer all the required cargoes from remote areas. That is true for Japan in particular.
When bases, which are spread throughout the ocean, accumulate certain amounts of oil, iron or aluminum, transport ships start cruising between the bases and the main center. That is done by the computer and starts at the beginning of the game.
To ensure the resources are supplied continuously, it is better for the player to control that process by laying the service lines for tankers and dry-cargo ships by himself.
€œAny attacks at convoy ships?€
- If you want to defend your own transport ships from hostile submarine and marine aviation attacks, you are sure to find all that in the game!

QUESTION 12: And will there be a multiplayer?
- No. But planned in an add-on.

QUESTION 13: Will there be land operations?

- There is no doubt about it! You can€t be the Lord of the World and rule only over the sea. It is always important that you fight for land resources. The player and the computer will both fight to found and keep naval bases and the places of their location as well.
And there will be battles ashore between the landing forces and the base garrison forces. However, it will be done without player€s participation.

Question14: What are the dimensions of the battle tactical map? Are ship battles possible without any visual supervision? What is the possible maximum number of ships/ airplanes involved in the battle? Can you give commands at a €œsmart€ pause?

- The battle zone occupies 25x25 km. There might be battles without any visual supervision if the enemy is radio-located. When that happens, the player can see targets. However, the enemy might not see them on the map. The player can use up to 50-60 ships and 200 airplanes for both sides at tactic missions.
You can set the battle on €œsmart€ pause and fly you camera amidst matrix-frozen explosions, select your units and give tactical orders.

QUESTION 15: Does the action take place only in the Pacific Ocean battle-ground?

- YES, of course.

Question16: How will the strategic bombers and dive bombers take aim?

- You can launch missiles in simulator mode with the help of a specially-designed moving missile aim, which marks the place where the missiles could hit in case you launch them immediately. That aim as well as other arcade elements can be switched off at will.

QUESTION 17: Which functions will be performed with the help of a joystick and which parameters of airplane flight and functioning can be regulated?

- The following controls can be performed with the help of a joystick. Certainly, these functions are backed up by the keyboard:

Other functions (switching turrets, flaps control, landing gear raising and lowering, etc.) are controlled from the keyboard only.

QUESTION 18: Will there be a possibility to land quickly on board an aircraft-carrier in case of an emergency, to reload the plane rapidly, to recharge it and take off within one mission?

- Certainly, you can ask for technical service if you command an aircraft-carrier at the tactical level.

QUESTION 19: What impact do the collisions have on ships and is it possible to sand vessels?

- Ships cannot collide in the game and they cannot be sanded as they avoid shallow places. In PacificStorm there are only the best captains who are permitted to command the ships. *

QUESTION 20: How will submarines operate in the game?

- Submarines have three different depth levels:
1. Emersion
2. Periscope depth
3. Complete submersion
When on the sea surface, the submarine is able to move faster than at the other two levels. However, it cannot attack the enemy ships and it can be spotted as easily as the surface vessels.
When a submarine has emerged, it automatically replenishes its OXYGEN SUPPLY, which is reduced gradually when the ship is under water. In case a submerged submarine runs short of its oxygen supply it surfaces automatically to refill it and then dives at the initial depth again.
At periscope depth a submarine can be located by the enemy€s surface ships and aviation at a relatively close range. It also is able to fight at this level.
When the submarine is completely submerged (complete submersion level), it can be located only by sonar-equipped ships. However, not only should those kinds of vessels be developed during the war period, but they also should be used by the army. Thus American and Japanese underwater ships have a good start at the beginning of the war.
When completely submerged a submarine cannot attack the enemy.
It seems to me that due to this kind of simple and realistic control system the submarines become not only real sea hunters, but they are also much easier to command. And the process won€t bother the admiral that has to supervise all the Pacific Ocean Navy.

QUESTION 21: If a player has a lot of aircraft how he/she should control his/her forces? Will there be a possibility to unite the planes into groups or squadrons? Will it be possible to single out airplanes of the same type quickly?

- At present there is a system of €œsmart€ pause in the game. When you are playing in this mode there is no need to hurry when giving orders to all your units.
Groups can be formed by pressing Ctrl+1€¦9
To single out the planes quickly you should choose an airplane and press either Ctrl+Z to select all airplanes of this type or just Z to choose all aircraft of this type within the screen.

Question22: What basic commands can a player give to formations and separate units at the tactical level?

- These are the commands units comply with:
€ stop
€ Move to a point
€ Shoot at a pointed target
€ Shoot at a certain point located at the sea or land surface

A player is able to command his units to function in one of the three operation modes:
€ Passive mode: a unit is waiting for the orders and does not maneuver or fight
€ Semi-active mode: a unit does not maneuver but shoots at the enemy ships when they are within his range
€ Active mode: a unit can both maneuver by itself and shoot at the enemy ships
A player can also choose the most important targets from a special list of the possible objects a unit can shoot at.
In the Japanese aviation there is an optional command for a player to use a kamikaze mode. When a Japanese pilot receives such an order he can choose his own targets and attack them at the expanse of his death. There is also a command for a player to inhabit the selected aircraft both in the US and Japanese air forces.

Question23: The system requirements for the game.

- As the game code now is undergoing testing and optimization, the final system requirements will be published later. Still, at the moment they are:

Good idea Lexx, should answer some peoples questions about this game.

I did stumble on some issues that I consider major over at their forum that I hope they can improve on though.

One was that they decided to give all aircraft unlimited machine gun ammo, and the other issue is that the service ceiling for flying is 3km in game, which they say has an atmospheric equivalant of 10km.

I hope they will reconsider and put limited ammo in aircraft, and "uncompress" their atmopshere for the flight sim part so that the dive bombers for example will have adequate time to line up on a ship to make their dives from 15,000 to 20,000 feet +. As well as making it more realistic for climb to altitude and fighting in general in the air.

Yes, I have no idea where or why the 3km limit comes from. Lets think. Maybe its to ensure anti-aircraft guns always have good effect. Just something I thought of, a guess.

As for unlimited ammo, they said its to prevent players from having to cycle through lots of aircraft looking for one that has ammo left. There may be other benefits as well, such as it may abstractly represent multiple sorties or multiple missions flown, or it may just be a simplification for coding or performance reasons - not sure. It may be air-air guns only, and not torpedoes and bombs. Either way, it should effect BOTH sides equally, so...mmm...

Well, that's a good thought that 3km keeps you in the AA guns for gameplay sake, but he said that at 3km the atmosphere behaves like it's 10km up, you wouldn't have to climb far or change altitude very much to feel the effects I guess. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

The ammo they told me is only for the aircraft machine guns, not bombs or torpedoes and I assume other large weapons like rockets.

No doubt Nimits, it's still on to buy list when it comes out. Commiekeebler at their forum told us that you can launch the OS2U scout planes from your cruisers and battleships and fly the plane to help spot artillery from your ship to improve their accuracy. I was peeking at their forum and saw they were cutting out ships, etc.

I hope they rectify and add them back in at some point, but I probably will be getting it.

We have limited ammo although we are still balancing how much we can give to the player. Our publisher says we canot make the sim mode thrilling to the player if the amount of ammo will be as limited as in reality. We were not cuttin out ships, we were just thinking and discussing on our forum (http://www.pacificstorm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18) what else we'd include in the game in future.

I'm glad to hear you guys are considering limited ammo. If you go by reality, it creates a play balance all on it's own. You could only pack so many .50 caliber rounds in the wing of a fighter, and you could pack less rounds of 20mm for example.

From the game videos you guys had, 500 rds for a .50cal gunstation on a B-24 seems correct. A P-47, F4U, F6F, all had around 30 seconds or thereabouts of constant firing time with their .50 caliber weapons. I think that would be more than enough in the battles the sim provides. You could make an option to let players have unlimited ammo so that they could enjoy the game the way they wanted to. But fans like me and others here would actually enjoy being limited with realistic amounts of ammo when playing.

Just an update, at the Pacific Storm forums the developers said that under the "difficult" campaign setting, all aircraft will carry the realistic ammount of ammo. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
