Had an opportunity to try out the new mg_snd.dll today and I like it very much. Everything sounds great in external views, while being much more realistic in-cockpit. You can still hear other aircraft, but at shorter distances and with a much more subtle effect. Ditto for other aircraft firing.

Only a few things seemed a little bit off:

Mk108 sounds still seems overdone. At a distance, it seems louder than ships firing.

High-pitched whine of the Me-262 seems to carry a little too far. You always know when there is a jet anywhere within 3km or so.

Sound level of flak explosions seems to low. You can barely hear them going off right next to your plane (although sounds of shrapnel hitting are very loud). The high-pitched component seems okay, but this is all I hear. Needs a quick, deep "krump" sort of sound. If the flak explosion levels could be raised without effecting other explosions, I think it would sound very nice.

I'm using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card and have my attenuation set a 2 in the conf.ini, FYI.

Doesnt sound like much of an improvement at all to me - bad pun, I know.

I installed Jane's WWII fighters on my new WinXP box just to hear that "krump - krump" Flak sound once in a while /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I like it better too - it's an improvement,

however, I think it can be better - I still can turn my head and hear them coming.

But it's better for sure.

Yes, new sound dll is a great improvement indeed. The only thing that conserns me... is there file version check, or some other kind of check that will keep people on the same version of sound dll? Meaning...the one with the "sonar" is still available, and i have no doubt that some people will use it in advantage under FR settings...which makes it some kind of cheating, doesn`t it? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif You know what i mean? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

The guns in the P-51 are all distorted with either file for me. Almost breaks my speakers! None of the other planes have this problem only the US planes.

Everything else sounds fine.

After downloading and extracting the RC01 and RC02 files available on the homepage today, you will find in your FB directory two files named "mg_snd.dll" and "mg_snd_.dll" The game will use whichever file is labeled "mg_snd.dll." To test the new, alternate sound file, do this:

1. rename "mg_snd.dll" to something like "mg_snd_original.dll" that will remind you it is the standard file.

2. rename "mg_snd_.dll" to "mg_snd.dll"

The game will now be using the new test sound file. To go back to the standard sound file, simply reverse these renaming steps.

Not sure if that falls under a bug or the not hearing anything or very little above engine noise category

I performed about a dozen tests under the following conditions: QMB, Smolensk map at 1500hrs, 1000m, my P-51D-5NT with default loadout and 100% fuel vs 4xBf-109G10's with same settings. With mg_snd.dll I could hear the G10's from about 400m away (just eyeballing it, no icons were used). With mg_snd_.dll I was only able to hear them from about 150-200m. MK108 fire was still a bit overdone though. MG131 wasn't too bad but could stand to be toned down some too. My oppinion is it is definatly a step in the right direction, but it could use a little more work. Externals sounded fine to me. I havn't tried flak or artillery yet.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

Landing gear and flap "hydraulics" sounds have always been very quiet for me in 109s and 190s. The sounds are still there, but can only be heard if engine is off. Little has changed in the new sound .dll for me other than the landing gear sound being a bit more subtle in the other aircraft now.

While sonar sound isn't eliminated, this is certainly the best and most realistic FB has ever sounded for me.

Major performance improvement over 1.11 sound. Flew online tonight on 3 different servers and had no sound related stuttering at all! Smooth as a baby. In 1.11 i had regular sound stuttering in fights and when looking around quickly.

Both .dll:s gave the improvement although mg_snd.dll works best on my system. Had roughly the same experience regarding distance and sound as stated in posts above.
