January 1942 SW of England on a clear, but dark night, I pick up a fast-moving contact via hydrophone @ about 170 heading NE. Up periscope, watch & wait. Finally it comes into distant view... a passenger liner running 21kts, lights off. We surface the boat, ahead flank & run to intercept. When we close to within about 2500M distance, she throws her searchlights on us & IMMEDIATELY SLOWS DOWN to 9kts!!! (I'm scratching my head on this one...) We slowed to match speed, lined up perpendicular & closed to about 1200M. I hesitated a second but then thought there was no way I was letting this one go. It was running lights-out & didn't have any red crosses I could see. Was wondering if this has ever happened to anyone & if so, why? I wondered if perhaps it was as if it were waiting to be boarded (so to say), etc.?

I think the attack was in order since she used her searchlights and she was darkened. Did she finally do down?. I was in a similar situation but the liner didn't slow down and my shots missed.

She went under just a moment after the second screenshot was taken.

This is the 2nd liner I've sunk. My 1st was in an armed & escorted convoy & therefore not traveling @ 21kts. I've heard of others sinking liners, but I don't recall them saying that they slowed down or stopped when intercepted. I'd think that they, like any other cargo ships I've intercepted (unless friendly or neutral), would continue to run & try to escape.

I have to say though, its the weird things I've seen in this sim that make it so interesting and enjoyable. Like the few times I've seen other merchants seemingly come to another's aid during or after an attack, etc.

I'm with VONHARRIS. I once ran across a liner and it was cruising at about 21kts. It didn't slow for me at all. I surfaced and tried to run it down to no avail. Once she saw me she started zigzagging like crazy. I sent out a couple of torpedoes and both missed. Oh well. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Happened to me as well. Another time I got lucky and set up and underwater attack that succeeded http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Other times I sank them, they were in convoy. But yeah, never seen one slow down for me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
