Ok, Sailor Steve and Beeryus, slang speakers of Utah and Yorkshire can't understand me; maybe english speakers living just some miles off have to face the same problem.

Not surprising at all, as I'm totally unable to understand some italian dialects; with yours, at least, I understood the general meaning (Marse=Mister?).

My point is: speaking a basic, maybe humoristic, english I can share informations with japanese, chinese, turk, arab, german, dutch people. It's not an example, I really do it often.

French is different, less people knows it, and you have to speak it in the best way.

You know, all latin idioms are similar. Just like the germanics, with english you can understand dutch, and so on. The idiom used by Yarrick is from the same latin branch than french and italian... so was a nice joke from him to try to puzzle with it people who speak at least french or italian.

I think that english is higly influenced from latin. Most names / adjectives can be used only changing some letters.
Also, German is the most-spoken language in Europe.

Pr0metheus 1962
11-15-2004, 11:23 AM
English is a Germanic language. It has much more in common with German than Latin. The reason English has so many words that seem influenced from Latin is that the Normans introduced many Norman-French words into the English language during the Middle Ages when English was quickly changing from Middle English (which had developed from Anglo-Saxon which was itself a derivative of languages/dialects spoken in Denmark and Saxony in the early Middle Ages) into its modern form, and these words have remained in use especially in Southern England where the Normans consolidated their power and where 'Oxford English' became the 'standard' dialect. However the English language's heaviest influence is, and always has been, Germanic. You can see this more clearly if you go to the North of England, where more Germanic-rooted words tend to be used than in the South.

Also, somewhat confusing is the number of English words which derive from Germanic words that have gone out of common usage. This, married with the fact that some French words and some German words look similar but have completely different meanings, makes things confusing. For example, the word "tail" might be wrongly assumed to stem from the French "Taille", but in fact it derives from a Germanic base "Taegel" meaning hairy tail.

Now thats over lets now all focus on getting more members here @UK & DE, subsim.com and in other SHIII related forums to help get the SHIII
numbers up there when SHIII comes out in Feb'05.

Lets turn some negative into positive. The more
Support and interest we give to the dev teams
efforts in the form of supportative feedback
the more we can expect after SHIII is released.

I want to see SHIII expansion packs, MODS,
advanced additions and features, And of course
a new Destroyer command so we can have battles
against not just AI escorts but now human
controlled escorts.

Lets make it happen!

TASKFORCE1x1

I have a workforce at work of about 3500 people. I pass on the information by word of mouth mostly. When I ask my co-workers and other workers from other shops I strike a conversation asking them if they are into any new PC games lately. Then I go further with it like asking about how important to them the graphics should be for games. I then tell them if they reply yes to me by telling them in an exciting voice" You've gotta see SHIII then! its cutting edge in graphics and sound and will blow you away" I lure some to my PC account and show them the hi-res videos of the sim. That really hooks them!

We need more marketing tools dev team. Hint: more videos. I show them to my co oworkers and thats enough to hook them for sure. I'm POC for SHIII there and often some come to me asking whats going on with the latest in gaming.

Thats all how BTW I got 1 guy at work play BF1942. He claims he would of never ventured out to by any game unless he was brought to light by me showing how much fun it was and funny to play and watch others get cought in predictaments while multiplaying online.

Now he will buy SHIII as well with my trusted words. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Was Destroyer Command all that good a game? I remember being a bit concerned that it wouldn't have the kind of immediacy, focus and tension that a sub sim has. I never bought it because 1:SH2 was so roundly criticised (and deservedly so in my opinion) and 2: because it was basically a multiplayer sim and I hate multiplayer simulation games. Even if SH2 had been great, and if DC had been great, would all that many people have bought DC? After all, the multiplayer community is very much a niche market even now. Sure, most people on the web have played multiplayer games, but a lot of people still don't have a fast enough connection to play online.

I'm all for new mods and expansions, but I fear that a new Destroyer Command game might squander all the advantage that a great game like SH3 will secure. I'd hate for SH3 to be so good, and then DC bring us back to the low point that we were at after the last DC game.

Instead of making a Destroyer Command game I think the developer would be better off milking the SH3 cash cow for a bit, by which I mean expansions focused on more U-Boats and more theatres of war. For example: 'SH3 in the Mediterranean' with Italian subs; 'SH3 in the Indian Ocean'; an American vs. Japanese expansion; a World War 1 variant; perhaps a 'what if' variant where the war goes on until 1946 and the Type XXIs really come into battle in full force. If I was UbiSoft I would want to really get all I could from this game, and not wager everything on something that moves away from the focus of what I'm sure will be a very successful game.

I dream of a day when there will be a chance to play a two week long online campaign in real time. Several shifts of dedicated members some in U-Boats some on DDs, Corvettes and Frigates. Since we are from all over the world the time difference could pose no problem. Your watch would last 6 hours and there will be no automated crew spotting. You should do it all yourself. I reckon we would need some 100 odd hard core gamers. I have pretty much tought that over and maybe in 10 years it is achievable.
