Hi, I use to play Aces of the Pacific quite a
lot in the old dos days, I was wondering how
Pacific Fighters compares. AOTP had a setup
where you got promoted, sometimes it would move you to a different squadron. I've yet to find a flight game that I enjoyed as much as AOTP.
On the other hand, I don't really want to start
messing with EMS, XMS and autoexec.bat and
config.sys's either....and I gave my 486 to the
thrift store anyway....can anyone clue me in as far as the ranking and assignment in PF?
Thanks in advance
Rob

Rob

Ah AOTP.. Now that brings back memorys.. One of my first loves.. One of my first MODS.. The things you could do with a simple HEX and TEXT editor back than.. Some people still host sights with some of my MODS for the game.

Now days you have to DLL this and 3D model that.. But I digrees. What AOTP lacked in FM's and Graphics it made up for in campain missions.. In that back the online play was pretty much un heard of.. Unless you paid $12/hr to play Air Warrior on the old Genie network.. Which I did! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Do you remember Red Baron? In that campain if you did real good you would recive a challenge from an enmy ace to meet you at such and such spot for a one on one.. Todays sims have better eye candy and flight models.. But nobody has really advanced the imersion of the missions much IMHO.

What Tagert said.

But do buy PF. I don't have mine yet, as it won't be hitting Canadian shores until later this week, so I can't speak to campaign specifics, but from what I hear, it'll be much the same as the prior Maddox games, with initially selectable ranks, promotions based essentially on merit, and the like.

PF might not be AOTP in some ways, but it will be fantastic. Pick up the IL2 FB Gold Pack and install PF overtop for...what was it? Roughly 200 flyable planes? Something like that.

Welcome aboard!

Heh heh...I've got 'em all on floppy.
I guess I better burn em onto a cd just in case.
I had great fun putting 20 mm's on P40's and making Nates fly like George's---thanks Tagert for all that ground breaking stuff!

I've still got AOTP on cd in it's box....I let
the Tornado sim go but I can't cut that one loose.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Take care

Thanks for the tip Mashie...I'll do that. Will the planes actually mesh from one game to the other? Hmm...

Rob

I picked up that all in one thing taht Dynamix put out years after.. It had RB, AOTP and AOE on it. Like Nibblick said.. pick up PF! It is well worth it at even twice the price!! That and you will get flash backs playing it.. Somethig that CFS2 didnt do for me.. It took ten years.. But AOTP has finally been bested in the WWII PACIFIC arena.

If you still want to take AOTP out for a spin, go download DOSBox. It emulates Dos inside of Windows...right down to the memory management. You even control the number of CPU cycles so that you get the right performance for the DOS game you are playing.

Works like a charm for AOTP. I missed it for so long and now I can play it in anticipating of PF. Was having a great time with the Ki-61 campaign and others.

Dude if you're endorsing it....I'm gettin it.
I had to go dig out my AOTP and it is the same
one you were describing. I've got all the hex editor instruction stuffed in it too LOL

The thing that was best about AoTP wasn't the game, although I loved every second of it.

It was the manual

I still have my AoTP game, game disks, and manual, in the box with the full cover sleeve

AoE and AoTD were class all the way, too.

Thanks for the advice and links guys, I'm off to find DosBox, didn't know there was such a critter.

I had previously tried running some stuff in a dos window with poor results
Appreciate the help!

I'm still running DOS 6.22 on a new Athalon 2000+ box. I have olde Fortran code and still fire up Master of Orion 1 -- never been bettered that game.

When I get Athalon64 I should be able to plug my DOS disk in and boot up 16bit operating system running 32bit DOS extender (the fortran) on 64bit cpu. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I still think AOTP (RB, AOE) had a better offline campain.. But PF is still very good! And the ability to DL missions and campains that others made makes offline ever better sometimes.

In short, if you like IL2 you are going to LOVE PF!
