I guess maybe you're after Sir Archibald Russell, Chief engineer on the Brabazon project, helped design Concorde amongst other things. He was granted a patent on a single spar wing design of some kind, though I don't know the detail.

Shot in the dark here but have you by chance recently been watching the Wings of the Luftwaffe FW190 segment on the history channel?

If so the bolt on wing with the hinged fairing to conceal the fasteners caught my eye as well.

If not it was just a guess, carry on.

Since there were apparently several different patents on single spar designs in the late twenties, I ask myself is this a definitive first patent or just AN other?

well this thread seems to be nearly done so I will reveal the secret.

Willi Messerschmidt

It's in the 109 btw and IMO is a remarkable achievement for strength and lightness.

If anyone's interested, the patent specification can be found HERE (http://depatisnet.dpma.de/DepatisNet/depatisnet?window=1&space=main&content=treffer&action=pdf&session=c23b66f330da61d0a9b30c3b4b04a8dff72f02efb9 0e&stamp=115811&docid=US000001803030A-29850752699&Cl=3&Bi=2&Ab=&De=2&Dr=1&Pts=&Pa=&We=&Sr=&Eam=&Cor=&so=asc&sf=vn&firstdoc=165&NrFaxPages=3&pdfpage=1)

Okay, so the session had expired.
We'll have to do it the oldfashioned way then.

First go to www.depatis.net (http://www.depatis.net), thats the site of the german patent and trademark office, then choose the english interface in the upper middle.
The go to "search > beginner" in the upper left corner. Enter this patent-no. in the search field: US 000001802438 A and you should find the patent.
If you search for "Willy Messerschmitt" in the inventor field, you'll find 165 patents on his name, mostly aircraft-related stuff, but also a sewing machine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
