Hey guys - After so much fun with IL2 (and much more to come in the coming months), I am about to dip my foot into the jet sim pond. It has come down to a choice between Falcon 4.0 and LOMAC, and since it takes 15 min just to get your F-16 started in Falcon, I think LOMAC will get my first nod, since I am a noob.

My question though is, do any jet sims allow you to start off with 1950s jet warbirds ? Before I fly a F-15, F-16 or Hornet, I would like to try a Mig 15 or F86 Sabre. Is this possible in some decent game or is it a no go ?

Since IL2 has been so much fun, I thought I would move up the difficulty scale in a historical fashion to the 1950s warbirds. Any suggestions ?

Thanks,
Jay

Strike fighters got 50´s jets (to download).Although it´s a "lite" sim it´s quite enjoyable.
https://store.thirdwire.com/store.htm

A very good site to get good aircrafts to Strike fighters.

Mig Alley, not a new sim, quite old but still nice IMHO.

Try the 1946 jets in IL-2. P-80 and MiG-9 are probably quite similar to F-86 and MiG-15.

Get an old PC or set up a W98 partition and find a copy or Rowan's MiG Alley from 1998.

Imagine you are Formula One driver(playing IL2) What do you do for fun? You race go carts!!! That is the way I enjoy Strike Fighter Series. There is a bit of a learning, programing curve and you need to do some reading to learn how to get the sim to work for you. However, it is just plain FUN. I love it. I play First Eagels, Wings Over Vietnam, Wings Over Israel and I have the Wings Over Korea as a separate install. Great entretainment. Just remember, Its not as serious as IL2. Its very mod frindly and just the new A/C can keep you entretained for Dayz.

No LOMAC add ons for early jets?

The other option would be FS9 or FSX or X-Plane and see if there are any decent F-86s out there. Leitmotiv might be able to help you out on that as he seems to know what's what in terms of FSX add ons.

Other than that, RRG will be releasing a Korean sim (Based on the SoW engine now I think) so in a year of so's time you might be blessed with a nice new Korean war sim for your F-86 flying pleasure.

There is a MiG-15 payware add-on for FSX/FS9, published by Flight 1. I don't know about the F-86.

There`s CfS2 and a add on from Flight one (expensive) or if you have CFS3 you can download a free Korean add on Netwings (http://www.netwings.org/library/CFS3_Korea/)

You've got my attention Stalker...never heard of it, wonder how it compares to IL 2?

We have a member in here who has time in the Sabre, wonder if he's tried it?

Land graphic are dated. Sky graphics aren't too bad. Lots of great dogfight action. I have had loads of fun with that game fighting on either side.

MiG Alley was the immediate predecessor to BoB:WoV, by the same team, but hasn't received a rework so is like the original BoB:WoV rather than version II, although the source code is available.

Good points: view system, glints from planes helping you spot them, and some goof FM points, like a long takeoff run for the F-84.

Another sim with a Korean option is Targetware, but online only. I think Warbirds III might also have a MiG and F-86, but again online.

I hope for the CFS3 add on I presume you can get other add ons for a Firefly, Sea Fury, Meteor, B-29 (Shockwave?) and a Po-2. But for free and with good scenery you can't knock it.

The AI in Mig Alley is challenging, especially with the large sweeps you have to take in jets.

Regarding MiG Alley, it's from about eight years ago. I remember it played a lot like European Air War but with slightly better graphics. It oozed with potential but I couldn't get MiG Alley to behave properly in XP and my Win98 machine couldn't do it justice. I think I logged about ten hours total flight time in that sim. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

One thing I recall really not liking about MiG Alley was the MIDI music soundtrack. FWIW.

I think the best current F-86 combat sim is the Wings Over Korea mod for Wings Over Vietnam. It's far from perfect but there is a nice collection of jets and prop planes from that era. Wings Over Vietnam isn't difficult to find either, just look on Amazon.com for a bundle titled Vietnam Attack Pack.

The CFS-3 Korean War mod isn't bad overall but inherently limited by the structure of CFS-3 itself. The last time I installed it, the Korean War mod was still an open project with plenty of bugs. CFS-3 does come with its own late war jets like the P-80 and Vampire for its default campaigns. I've seen 'jewel case' copies of CFS-3 at Office Max for $10 USD.

I think the earlier advice to practice with the jets in 1946 is good though. YP-80 vs. Ta-183 is a close cousin to F-86 vs. MiG in "Wings Over Korea."

BDG did some fix for MiG Alley, I remember that much. I wish that IL2 had such a view system
as that one. No funny $#!+ with LODs, trying to judge energy state and attitude from 'artfully'
mangled state-changing sprites at near contact ranges. And it's got smooth 8-way pan if all
you have is a hat switch.
It has weak points for sure. Online not worth messing with and until the final patch the
campaign was excessively buggy too. But for the end of the 90's it had a terrific FM and
featured those jets and a beautiful Mustang though IIRC you couldn't fly the Yak-9 which
I really wanted to have.
A redo of that would have been worth the buy but as it is BoBII hasn't made a big enough splash
to get MA into priority, has it?

There's a freeware download of the F86 floating around. I had it in MS04 for a while, but ultimately dumped it and MS as you couldn't spin, stall or crash it, and you certainly couldn't shoot anything with it.

..... Rowan was also responsible for "Flying Corps", a terrific WW1 flight sim. We lost a great flight-sim developer when Rowan pulled out of the field.

I'll put in another check for MiG Alley. Great game! I loved the sound of stressing metal during high G turns... And the fact that, pull too hard, and the wings rip off! Oops! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

In my oppinion, its best attributes were, no surprise, the F-86 and MiG-15. The other jets were okay, but the F-51 stunk. Taking off was difficult. Landing was darn near impossible due to what I thought was a gross overtendancy to ground loop; tip up on a wing, and BOOM! big burning crater. Not so much fun after a long, difficult mission.

They did a really good job with tracer fire. You'll hear the accounts of "big glowing tennis balls floating past my canopy" from the guys who where there. That's exactly what it looks like in the game.

There's also a gun camera feature, which is really nice. It's in black and white, too.

The Wings of...Vietnam,Europe and Israel are a great sim series. One of the best dogfighting experiences you can have, especially with the latest patch.
i agree that is a really FUN sim,but don´t expect easy meat on WOx skyes, MIG 17 can eat you alive as long you are always piloting heavier and less agile aircrafts than the red side.
You can learn a lot about combat manouvering and energy manegement there.
Try the Korea mod , it is really great.

MiG Alley rocks. I've got it running fine on my new PC, graphics aren't awsum, but the AI and the campaign puts Il-2's to shame.
