From a a poster called Tactical Yak at SimHQ after a WW2 facts site:

80% of Soviet males born in 1923 didn't survive World War 2.

Speechless!

That doesn't mean just the Red Army, though. That percentage includes all branches of service and all types of warfare, and reagrdless of whether or not the males born in 1923 were in uniform or not when they died, or even if they were killed in action or killed as prisoners. Without knowing the newborn Soviet population in 1923, the percentage of which services in the USSR accpeted those males during wartime, and then knowing the attrition rates for each type of service, it's hard to make sense of that percentage in real terms

I wonder how many were murdered by Stalin.

I think USN aircraft claimed to have destroyed so many German U-Boats that they actually accounted for 700% of U-Boats ever produced http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Murder's an untidy word. He made statistics out of them

Yes well, it was wrong and there's nothing we can do about it now other than to learn from that horrible time

Also by Stalin:

"It takes more guts to retreat than to advance in Red Army."

"It takes a hero not to be a hero in Red Army.

i'm not sure on the percentage....but the Red Army was suffering from a loss of manpower by the end of the war

P1ngyu had some statistics on RAF bomber command losses that amazed me. I thought night time bomber was safer. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Maybe he'll post them again.

I've seen these figures posted before regarding RAF Bomber Command losses:

For 100 RAF Bomber command airmen:

* 55 killed on operations or died as result of wounds
* 3 injured (in varying levels of severity) on operations or active service
* 12 taken prisoner of war (some injured)
* 2 shot down and evaded capture
* 27 survived a tour of operations

I believe it was more like "It takes a very brave man to be a coward in Red Army"

Then there is "Loyalty is the disease of dogs"

Stalin probably killed more than the Germans did.

According to "A Strategy for Defeat, The Luftwaffe"
the odds of a German fighter pilot surviving
un harmed was under 2% if he earned his wings
during 1941........
Crippled, killed or captured, 98%.

Odds were not a whole lot better for the early
8th AF bomber crews.

I can not find the reference, but the Luftwaffe
shot down more Allied planes than were produced.
A lot more....... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Another famous Stalin quote:

"Hum, next time I try oral sex with a peasant girl, remind me not to put glue on my upper lip."
