Hi all...

My ATI 9800 pro video card up and died this weekend, and I need a replacement. What would you all recommend? There are so many models, I can't tell what is what for performance

Constraints:
> Either ATI or NVIDA - I have no bias there
> Must have street price <$250
> Must have better PF performance than my 9800 pro..
> Just need it for games - no tv or other 'features' required or desired

Ideas - and why?

thanks!

The "<$250" issue may keep you in the 9800 market, though you may be able to get an "XT" or even a "PE" version of the same card. For a few more zlotys you could move up to an X800 or X800 Pro (though not the X800xt)

Saw a 6800 (none GT or Ultra), 256Mb card for around $280 US at Frys' electronics over this weekend (unfortunately, this is my 'rent' paycheck period, and it isn't a good enough deal to cause me to dip into savings). The prices will start dropping soon... we're due for the next generation of vid card releases in the next month or two.

cheers

well a 6600gt 128mb card goes for under 200.$ US. it will give a decent boost over the 9800 pro depending on the rest of your specs. just dont expect massive FPS incress. you can check out gameing sites like gamespot.com or ign.com and find comparison charts. if i remember right the 6600gt doged the 9800pro in almost all test. the only test the 9800pro was keeping was with old games like AVP ect.

Thanks for the advice folks....

I guess I'll skip PF for a bit until the next video card round...

If anybody plans on upgrading to the latest and greatest, I'd be interested in a used one too.

Thanks!

why skip PF. even a 9800pro runs it very well.

if PF is your main consern right now a 6600gt will run it VERY well. not with water=3 but hay even 6800ultra have to work for that setting http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You might have missed it, but the reason I need a card is that my 9800 just up and quit! displays the mouse cursor, but nothing else (strange). On board video gets about 1 frame every 2 seconds.. that aint gonna work.

Have you tried ebay? GT's and Ultra's go for about $200-$380 range.
