The 5900 does't not support water=3. Set it to water=2 instead.

The game is optimized for 1024 by 768 resolution.

In Performance and Quality Settings, I wouldn't set Antialiasing and Anisotropic higher than 2x. Or mayby, depending on you'r CPU, try Antialiasing at 4x, and Anisotropic set to application controled.

For the Image Settings, set it to Performance.

I have the same card (5900 Ultra) and PF runs great for me with frame rates in the mid 50's to low 70's and it still looks good too.

I'm at work right now, but when I get home I'll post up all the settings I use so you can give them a try. (results will vary by system)

One thing though. What drivers are you currently running the card with?

I have a 5700Ultra, so maybe this doesn't apply, but if I run OpenGL, I get an "x-ray vision" effect on some planes at max zoom. Z-buffer texture issue? I dunno, but it doesn't happen in DirectX

OK here's what I have and I get an average of 45FPS in Black Death. (And very smooth game play if you use the beta .dll's that Oleg is offering.)

Display Properties:

1152x864 32 bit
100 hertz Screen refresh rate
Antialiasing settings - 2x
Anisotropic filtering - 2x
Image settings - Quality
Vertical Sync - off

Il-2 Set-up:

Driver: OpenGl - 1152 x 864 32 bit, use Stencil Buffer
Video: NVidia GeForce 5200..5900 - 1x Shaders//
Sound: Custom // Playback Channels 16 // Headphones // 3D Engine Mode €" Minimal (fastest) // Sampling rate - 22050//

Note: If you have Asus A7N8X Deluxe MB and are using the on-board sound, you must remember to set the Hardware Acceleration to "Basic" each time you reboot. It won't hold the setting for some reason, even with the latest drivers, and stutter will increase in FB/AEP/PF if it's left on Full.

In game settings/Video Options:

Visability - High
Object Lighting - High
Object Detail - Excellent
Land Scape Lighting - Excellent
Land Scape Detail - Excellent
Clouds - Detailed Clouds

Note: After setting the above, (in Game) close the sim and make sure you change the following conf.ini lines to: (And don't open the video settings again or you'll have to reset these lines again.)

Forest=1
Water=0
Effects=0

And if they're not already there, add these lines:

PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.15
PolygonOffsetUnits=-3.0

Well I think that's about it. These settings are perhaps a compromise, but seem to work well with my 5900 giving both good performance and good appearance.

One last thing, go into Quick Mission Builder, call up a P-40 and fly it. Look up a bit and hit the "D" key to toggle the rear view mirror. (Assuming you have it mapped this key) Do so until the mirror is off.

Hope this works for you. Good luck. S!
