Looking at an American Spifire skin on IL2 Skins I hadn't realised the US used spitfires at all, anyone care to enlighten me with regard to numbers and theatres?

I think the US used the VB, IX and VIII mainly in the Mediterranean (sp?) as interceptors and photo recon.

It was a sort of reverse lend-lease.

Pick up a book by George Loving, jr. He was a US Spitfire and Mustang Pilot in the MTO. The book is called "Woodbine Red Leader". Actually, his P-51B, "Ginger", is represented by a very nice skin available at il2skins.com

It goes a bit like this

"The British loved her, the US were jealous of her, the Germans wanted her"

There is a lot of information available about the 31st FG. They flew Spitfires in the MTO before transitioning to Mustangs.

I posted this link - http://www.star-games.com/exhibits/spitfire/spitops.html in the thread for my yankee Spitfire skin.

I thought you might find it interesting.

Thanks, a fascinating read and some curious anecdotes from the pilots. I don't always read the description posted with the skins on Il2Skins, I will now.

Quite. And thank you for posting the link. I never knew.

(When I got the original IL-2 I "never knew" a lot of stuff that I know now.)

Ventura Publications had a couple of books under the title "American Spitfire" with details of the Spit in American use, centering on the fighter groups which used it most; the 4th, the 31st, and the 52nd.

There are also some details about the recon Spits operated by the 7th and 67th Photo Recon Groups and Spits used by the US Navy's VCS-7.

I believe that they're still in publication, and can be obtained through Squadron.com.

cheers
