I was watching an episode of 'Dogfights' last night, about Guadalcanal and they mentioned that Japanese Zeros had a weak spot right behind the cockpit, where the fuel tank was. Hit there and it would explode easily.

Are these weak spots modelled in game? Has anyone come across any commnity made charts of these? Not that i could hit them even if I knew them, but they would be good to know!

Uhm I dont think so.

Try shooting an A6M "Zekes" droppable fuel tank?

yes week spots are moddelled. especially the week spot called fuel tank...however regarding the zero i find that it seams to burn more often if you put the rounds in the right wingroot...maybe its just because that when i'm 200 meters behind it and aims for the wingroot the guns of my right wing goes into the fuselage behind the cocpit...would make sense aktually.

Well- as far as zekes go: it doesnt really matter where you hit since they go down fast
other planes: engine, cockpit, generaly anything you can hit at high off-angle. Dead six is heavily armored in most of the planes

and dogfights is... well IL2 is more realistic and it is a computer game, so that says a lot

Wings and wingroots are always a good bet. (With wingroots you also have a chance to score hits on the engine)

Considering that we are talking about the A6M i'd rather ask if there any strong spots modelled...

Yeah, the early model zeroes are basically flying tinderboxes, but it is true that if you set convergence right and concentrate on the wing root they will go down in flames very fast. The later model A6M5c has a lot more protection in this area having self sealing fuel tanks, and is more difficult to "torch". PS I hate "Dogfights" lol....Seems to me little more than USAAF/USMC propaganda, and very suspect on "facts" in my opinion. Entertaining though, in that "star wars" kinda way hehe. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Absolutely. All of the aircraft in IL2 have weak points...areas such as the pilot, the fuel tanks, control cables and rods, the engine, etc. Allot of that is modeled. With the Zero the fuel tanks are in several locations within the aircraft and by far the most vulnerable in the game are the ones at the wing root.

My suggestion is to aim for the inner wing (wingroot) and either you'll dewing the plane or light the fuel tank on fire.

Helps cut down on ammo usage as well. Unless, of course, you're like me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Been practicing this lately with the QMB - Load up a flight of 4 enemy aircraft (C-47s are a good place to start) and see how fast you can knock them down. I think I'm starting to get the hang of BnZ again...

Hmmm neither IL2's nor U-2's have such features. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

what I've also noticed about the modelling is that wings are more sensitive to gunfire when under high g turns. The wings come off easier under stress than when flying level.

Don't know about U-2, but I've actually found IL-2 to be surprisingly easy to shoot down, considering it's reputation as "a flying tank".

Once I had run out of cannon ammo in FW190, but managed to down an IL-2 with two MG 17's.
