I have a problem. Due to lack of time lately I can only play QMB. But, but... Every time I fly against Mustang, all the AI does is barrel roll on end. And I simply don't follow him `cause I:

1. Don't want to waste Energy( I fly 2 against 4 and my wingie is of no help other than an ammo absorber)
2. I don't know how to follow or counter his move.

For Example, last night I was all alone, and mixed with a pair of P-51B. I had the advantage, but every time I came at say .25, the Mustang would drop right wing, dive for about 50 m and then either barrel roll or flipflop around till he is behind me. And after watching this for half an hour, I got really pissed. I mean, how is it possible for an aircraft to barrel roll at 250 kmh? I was at 280 and was approaching him at a steady 10m/s, that makes his speed some 30 to 40 kmh lower, and this thing just barrelrolled!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I was driving Dora-9 at all times if that will be of help...

Well, we all know that the AI reacts at precisely 300 metres of closure, regardless of your position (even though a human opponent couldn't have possibly seen you). I think that bothers me more than anything.

I know in offline campaigns if the plane allows for rockets I usually take them and set my delay to allow for a 500-metre shot just to overcome this issue.

Getting back to your question. Well as you know it is always a matter of reacting to the situation. If you are not under any immediate threat, match his speed and close in for a shot (I personally use a 150-metre convergence or less).

If you want to conserve E then of course pull-up and try again (and again http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif). In the end the AI will do something foolish, or your get a lucky shot. Sometimes you can make this happen with a quick machine gun burst.

Probably one of the tougher AI planes to shoot down is the Brewster, as the AI will barrel row that puppy for all she's worth.

You have two options:

1) Knowing that the AI pulls the same sequential moves in the same directions every time at the same closure distances.. time his manuevers and point your plane where he is going to be and blast him when he rolls through your guns.

2) Pull up sharply, roll inverted and watch what your prey does.. and when they pick a direction, pull through and follow them for another firing solution.

Best,

~T.

Also, just for giggles, here is my barrel roll article posted at www.il2flying.com (http://www.il2flying.com) :

edit: nm.. the formatting gets all screwed up in a copy/paste. Check it out if you're interested under the "knowledge" section.

Don't try to follow that maneuver, just let him squander his E, and nail him as he languishes on the deck @ stall speed.

Main problem is controlling how fast you close on him .Two options first if just one-on- one slow, drop flaps and cut throttle and shoot straight down the barrell you might nail him or second as soon as he starts rolling go high and roll slowly outside him this will prevent overshoot and slow you down and you can roll again untill you point the top of the canopy ahead of him then pull down again onto his six. The second is better for conserving E . The FW is an E fighter so generally look to go high as a solution
