WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING ANY MORE QUESTIONS FOR THE INTERVIEW. Please stay tuned at MystWorlds.com (http://www.mystworlds.com) for semi-regular installments. Thank you.

Rand Miller will be in Paris on Monday, and Ubisoft is taking the opportunity to give fans a chance to ask Rand some questions!

Now you can finally discover the answers to those age old questions... like why being near Santa Claus makes him feel sleepy... or what his favourite food is.

Please use this thread to post your questions for Rand. We will gather them up and make sure he gets them on Monday. Thanks, and have fun! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Why didn't you and Robyn play the parts of Sirrus and Achenar in Myst 4, as you did in Myst?
How do you feel about playing Atrus?
Is Ghen blinded by his obsession of restoring D'ni or is he evil even without his obsession?
Can you release more information about Ketha, Ghen's wife?
How do you feel about the end of Myst series?
Can we hope for something else that is Myst related?
Will we find what happened to those giant daggers (from Riven) that fell near the cleft? We can still see the telescope there in Uru...
Will there be beta testing for Myst V?

I hope that at least one of these questions will be answered. Thank you for your time.

Just put some questions in the German forum earlier this day, but i have two more....

*I understood the age of Negilahn was ready to be released.
Would it be possible to let us enjoy it on a new authenticationserver, pretty sure lots of people would buy themselves another kagi key to be able to wander around there; it seems such a waste....
*Btw, there aren't any plans on pulling the plug on UU any time soon are there?

thank you for all the fun time you've given us!
(and err, wouldn't want anyone else to play Atrus http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

My first question is will we see a fourth book? Maybe a Book of Yeesha, that would be neat...

And my other if you can answer, will the jurney be created for the big screen? Shall there be a movie...or two...or...?

An obvious one is, "Will you play Atrus in Myst 5" but I suspect yes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

One thing I've always wanted to know but have never found the answer to and not even RAWA knows.... who was the man in the picture in Riven playing Aitrus? I've come across his photo in old Civil War pictures but didn't know enough about him to figure out who he was or even why his picture was used in Riven.

Oh yeah, will there be another Myst book?
Would you be opposed to making a Myst movie, even under your strict supervision?

I have a few,
1 Did you have any problem with Myst IV being rated T?(I had a dream I was in a van with Rand and I asked him that)
2 Why did you get Presto to say D'ni shouldn't be restored and then try to restore it yourselves?
3 Is Myst V really Myst V or Uru II
4 Will Myst V also come out for Xbox?(not that I'd care
5 Are you going to acknowledge things shown in Myst III and IV?
6 Will we see Releeshahn in Myst V?
7 Are the entire ages in Myst V reused from Uru Live, or just the names?
8 Can you explain that picture of you drunk and asleep on Santa Claus's lap?

My question, and I hope its asked, is, "Would Cyan ever considering making The Journeyman Project 4?"

Q: Cyan worlds has always been a company about innovation and trying new things, from Myst, to the depth and beauty of Riven, through to the 3d and online experiments in URU. What would you consider the most ground breaking or innovative aspect of Myst V?

RebelHive

Rand, are you going to play Atrus!

Gorange
04-09-2005, 01:13 AM
My question is based on technology;
Will we see an adeventure game produced by Cyan that we will be able to play in virtual reality as opposed to on a computer screen, as graphics technology progressinhg today would give an approximate 90% immserion in the game?
I would pay a resonale sum of money to get a VR headset and it would overall bring the cost down for headsets for the avergae gamer to own in a few years.

Looks like the obvious questions have been asked: Will there be live actors in Myst V, and will there be Releeshahn?

I'd like to add: What time period will the game be set? After Myst IV? After Uru? Some time in between?
And will it revolve around the family of Atrus or take a new direction?

Thanks Rand, for continuing the vision for so long.

Oh its been so long since i posted here so i guess this is the best place to start.

1. Will the focus of this story deal with someone from past mystgames or will this have a new villan?

2. Something tells me that this last game will kinda be a bridge from the other myst games to URU's storyline, and if so will we finaly take the long path to dni through the great shaft?

3. Since it looks like your useing the URU engine, did you go back and revamp the unused areas from URU live that we never got to see, and did you change much of that content?

4.Please give us a hint of what your next project will be.

Well these are the only questions i currently have for now.

I'm just gonna pitch in and answer a couple of the questions you have asked which we have answers for already.

quote:
originally posted by amyjenc1

My first question is will we see a fourth book? Maybe a Book of Yeesha, that would be neat...

A forth book was being written a few years back titled The Book of Marrim (marrim being the girl from The Book of D'ni for those who have not read it). The book was put on the back burner as focus was placed upon Uru. Nothing has been heard of it since.

quote:

7 Are the entire ages in Myst V reused from Uru Live, or just the names?

The majority of the ages in Myst V are new places there are a couple of places that have been reused and likewise with age names some of them have been reused too. The majority of the finished content for live that wasnt released was released in To D'ni and Path of the Shell.

Hope that helps

Q: Would it be fair to say that the cycle of the games will be closed in Myst V: End of Ages? Will we find out why the stranger found the book?

I wonder, does Rand Miller see the future of his worlds opening up to allow us as players to come together within them to a point where we might one day influence and carry forward their development (towards an ever unwriten end), or are they best always presented with a strong narrative whether single or multi player?

When MystIV was being made it was said that it would be very much like the original Myst. I really liked MystIV but other than the brothers being in it I didn't think it was too much like the original Myst. Is MystV going to be even more like Myst? Are there going to be red and blue pages to find?

1/Some fans are a little worried about Myst V being published only a year after the last sequel. How could you create a game in such short space of time?

2/Given the success in sales of the last two games in the series (Exile and Revelation), which are the reasons why you decided to end the saga?

I have sort of a tough one...Since i was roughly eleven ive been playing myst, the morals and principals that were passed on through the games beautiful sense of story has taught its played more than how to solve a puzzle. The lessons learned by the evils of greed and lust for power should serve as a reminder of the kind of world we live in today. Im eighteen now and would like to say that because of the myst games, i have developed my own morals and codes of living. What i really want to know is..What is it to the makers? What..(on a deeper level) has myst taught you about the grand scheme of things. My heart weeps for the series' end.

2. Reports say that Negilahn will not be in Myst 5. What is going to happen to Ages that just missed Uru and will not be reused in Myst 5?

3. Whatever happened to the Book of Marrim? Will there be another Myst novel at all?

4. Several of the DRC research notebooks mentioned a "Guild Captain." What is rank, exactly?

5. Do you agree with the latest petition for a Myst movie?

6. What are your thoughts about Myst coming to an end?

7. What are you planning to do after the series ends?

Here's one for the Rand-man...

1) So, how about thems D'ni time? What's the accurate conversion between D'ni prorahn and earth seconds? My rough conversion is 39 earth seconds equals 28 prorahntee, and that's accurate to within one second every 4-5 years, but it's not perfect... it's a lot more complex than that; that just happens to be a freak conversion that is very accurate. So, what's the conversion? I'll give you something good if you tell me... some Tiramisu or something! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

edit: I know this wouldn't be the kind of thing Rand would normally answer... but it's a little humor from when we spoke to him at Mystralia. He'll laugh when he hears it, especially from me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I've been hearing that Myst V is going to end the saga that we all have come to love so much.

I was just wondering...

Does that mean it will be the last game that deals with Atrus and his family, or is it the last game that will deal with the D'ni?

Also, do you plan on releasing more content for Uru and making it Live again? Officially, that is.

And are you going to write more books?

Here's a few -

1) If there's one thing missing in todays gaming, what would it be?

2) What do you see as the future of interactive adventure? Is it a step away from the older traditional model of p'n'c towards a more complex direct control, 3D experience, or something else entirely?

3) What do you feel towards the current trend toward situational puzzles, rather than the more technical or sedentary ones in Myst, in terms of interactivity and creativity?

4) Less of a question, this one... You hired top notch talent in the form of Richard Vander Wende in Riven, and have consistently shown that Cyan has a commitment to excellent production design on all of its titles. Will you continue to persue a more filmic model of development in future titles?

5) And if so... can I have a job? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif *coff*storyboard artist*coff*

6) Do you see an opportunity for the franchise to continue, in terms of novelisations and web-based applications rather than full-blown titles?

7) Which other companies do you most respect in the industry in terms of development and commital towards quality publishing?

I think that'll do.

keverh1
04-11-2005, 09:04 AM
Two of the biggest questions I have for you are:

What are the concerns as to keep the original religous aspects of the D'ni to future Cyan games/products?

Was Uru's exsample of the "Least and the Great" an exsample of the kind on underlaying ethical game content we can see in the future?

just a question I've had....:-)

Keverh

bowendesign

Actually, I'd also like to know more about Myst V in terms of technical specifications and whether the game will push hardware further than Uru in terms of graphical options.

I'd hope so. It should be noted however that many big games also cater for smaller comp specifications too by developing to a standard and downgrading it in terms of textures and effects, and usually it still looks great (Half Life 2 for example). I just hope those with computers that can handle more intensive effects like HDR et al will be able to see them used to their full advantage in the new title!

edit - hm, just one more (like Maltesers or Pringles, only with questions!) -

How do you personally think Uru was received, in terms of broadening the universe to encompass the stories and semi-religious aspects included in the novelisations? Do you think it might have over-complicated the concept and possibly scared people away, or are you happy with how it turned out?

I guess that's a lead in to ask whether or not Myst V would continue from Uru, or the main storyline from the other games.

I suggest you guys look up the Cyan website, under questions about a Myst movie, they already answer that question.

My questions are:

Myst V is the last title in the series, but isn't it true that Myst and Uru are two different stories?

And we saw the return of the brothers in Myst IV, have we really seen the last of Gehn?

bowendesign
04-12-2005, 08:39 AM
I think the questions are done and dusted... I'm not even sure mine got through.

RE Gehn, that'd be wicked. If anything, the other games haven't had such a good bad guy. The actor who played Gehn did it really well, and it felt dangerous being trapped in that cage with him outside it stalking about.

I think I prefer Riven due to its baroque darkness.

We could see the return of Gehn, he was trapped under the same concept as the brothers in a linking book which is a true age with no exits. Except it was a linking book with a false link to K'veer.I don't know how you would go about writeing a age to somewhere when the image is to K'veer unless it was an alternate K'veer that was made to look like the real one just without the books.

Here are a few more questions (I hope I'm not to late):

1. In the book of Ti'ana (page 235 soft cover) Aitrus states that Ko'ah was written for his father when he became grand master of their guild, however it is stated in the book of D'ni (page 33 soft cover) that Ko'ah hat been handed down over 8 generations. I was wondering if you could tell me if there is a reason for this or is it just an error?

2. Was the Terahnee book that Atrus found a linking book or a descriptive book?

3. Where did the link stones in Uru come from and how were they made?

I would also like to thank Rand for all the enjoyment I have had playing MYST games and for playing Atrus in MYST IV even though he said after Exile that he wasn't going to, the game would have bean missing something huge without him.

Last news I got was that the Paris Community Manager was in charge of getting the thing ready for publication. I'll see if I can track someone down to track them down to get it finished for you http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

I think somebody at Ubi must have made a mistake, the interview does not use the questions fans asked and it is the same one that could be found at gamesplanet before the publication at the German Mystworlds site, namely here (http://www.gamesplanet.be/index.php?main=gp_article&info=gp_article&articleId=427&chk=5So507f20g). I wonder why German fans are being told this would be the interview, its clearly a mass product for the press.

Though Myst Revelation was very beautiful, in my experience it was too much of a departure from the original Myst. I deeply hope the final Myst V will return to the atmosphere and gameplay style of the original Myst. The mystery, the freedom from timed, eye-hand coordination tasks, the languid puzzle solving, the haunting emptiness, and the music by the original composer...delicious. After all, it was that first game that won the thousands of devoted fans. Thank you.

Well I can tell you right now the music won't be written by Robyn... he hasn't been at Cyan (save for some occasional visits just to see his brothers) since Riven wrapped up.

Maybe there are just not enough of us here interested to warrant them bothering with us?... kind of reminds me of the whole Uru prologue thing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

I don't think that's the same interview we are talking about here. I'll go get clarification.

Hi all,

sorry we dropped the ball on this- I sort of didn't take part in the first part. But I will see what I can find out about what happened to the questions (and where the answers are).

Thanks for your patience...

OK!

Still in process- apologies, sometimes the wheels turn awfully slow here (but you knew that). We're coordinating with PR and the various different communities- French, German, etc. So it's taking a while. But it is still happening, and shouldn't take too much longer.

It's a big, world-wide community we have to think of... which can certainly have advantages- the group that made the Myst IV Revelation site was French, for example- but at times our need to coordinate can make things take a while. Apologies for that, and thanks for your patience.

I've really enjoyed the Myst novels. I am just starting the 3rd one now. Are there plans to write any further on Myst in the novel format, with David Wingrove or not?

Thanks,

So... any news yet? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif It's been a looong time since the last update.

Hey, send me the notes and I'll... *cof*... publish them... here...

Ah well, better use my Splinter Cell training to break into Ubi France. Shame my wide girth might make it hard to squeeze through air vents!

Are you guys still taking questions? Anyways, here's mine.

Rand,
Riven was never carbonized to run natively in Mac OS X. This was never a big deal as it runs perfectly in Classic. However, with the recent announcement of intel-based macs, Apple has said Classic will be no more. As a mac user, will you consider carbonizing Riven, my favorite game of all time, so that it doesn't get lost in the cracks of time and become ancient history? I'd gladly pay $10 for a downloadable update.

No we are not taking any more questions... they were all asked when Rand was in Paris.

We will be posting some of the answers next week! Stay tuned!!

I've got a question even though they are now closed and frankly it might not be for Rand, maybe someone out ther knows the answer or it has been covered in the past.

Could someone please tell me why the Chapters of 'Exile', 'Revelation', and 'End of Ages' use roman numerals to designate their chapters instead of the use of the D'ni symbology?

Thank you.

Because 9 out of 10 people who are getting the games for the first time aren't going to know what "Myst KI: Exile" means http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

I think they should've used D'ni numbers when & since Riven came out. People don't know it? That's the intrigue. |)_| It would've made people think, "What is that?" The imagery is the selling point. The numerical system would've added further intrigue.

Ahhh, marketing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
