Well, .......I suppose it stands to reason that here in the U.S. we're big on Thanksgiving:

Just look at what goes on in Washington: ........We clearly have a deep and abiding fascination with "Turkeys".

No disrespect to the Silent O (or Celeon), but there is the German tradition of "Erntedankfest", which literally means "Thanksgiving Festival for the Harvest". It's not associated with turkey, and not celebrated in urban areas, but in rural, agricultural communities, no parish vicar would be allowed to let that one slip by...
In short, the German tradition is much closer to the religious origins of the festival, and much more focussed on the actual agricultural harvest, so in the centre of attention (and the inevitable communal meal after the service) you find whatever produce is most typical for the village or region concerned.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanksgiving is actually close to Erntedanfest. It is a thanksgiving for the harvest. It is not about the turkey. Turkey is just part of the harvest. The time it is celebrated in the US is in the fall when all the summers harvesting is completed. We give thanks for the abundance of the harvest and that we can make it through the none growing winter months until the next growing season. I do not know were the turkey part came in but in my view turkey is dry and overrated....give me a nice smoked ham!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The last thing I heard as the British boarded my boat, "Boot hoch halten sonst wird keiner gerettet!"....Keep the boat afloat or no one will be rescued! My war was over....

Ah, well, ........It really depends on how you're turkey is prepared.

Some years ago, I invested in an English AGA cooker, and the birds that are roasted in that are a work of art.

(I love a good, well cured smoked ham, ....but I have to double up on my blood pressure medication.) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
