Hello, I am very new to this forum and very excited about this new game! From when they released the first screenshots and concept ideas I have been following intently, expecting great things but afraid to get my hopes up. I can now safely say I am totally psyched for the March release!

The game looks spectacular and almost every feature I hoped would be included has found it's way in. But the one that remains I have not seen any information about. Does anyone know what they're going to do about the radar war? When the allies begin equipping their ships and aircraft with ASV mark I radars and the German's rush to get a working radar detector (FuMB I "Metox" 600A), do we have that delay when the allies had the advantage?

And what about the U-Boat radars? In SH2 we got a mid-war U-Boat radar (FuMO 30) very late in the game. Do the radars evolve like the rest of the equipment eventually culminating in the advanced radars (FuMO 65 and FuMO 83) on the type XXI?

Hi and welcome to the forums. The radar yes this will be in, on allied ships and aircraft. I would guess that detectors will be in also though this is a guess by me. They said most upgrades subs got would be in the game.

That is one of the reasons they chose the Atlantic because it runs the whole length of the war and has lots of development and inventions. Im looking forward to it too! Its counting down to release, we are almost there.

Thanks a bunch. I'm absolutely buzzing!

U-Boats have been a major interest of mine for many years now. I have volumes of data I've accumulated on just about every aspect of their operation, right down to the little green and black pills the crews were given on patrols.

I'm very happy to see that "Bold" will be included in the game. Not since the days of Wolfpack have I had that luxury. But this brings up another question: Probably not included but another interesting tid-bit nonetheless is the FuMT 30 "Aphrodite." These radar decoy balloons floated a few meters above the surface, anchored to a floating plate. Aluminium foil attached to the balloon gave a strong radar echo, similar to that of a U-Boat conning tower on British radar screens. I know that the type IX boats carried approximately sixty of these little gems, often employing them while passing through the dangerous Bay of Biscay. The balloons were filled with hydrogen from four gas cylinders recessed in the port side of the conning tower.

Does anyone know if Aphrodite is to make an appearance? It wasn't a major contribution to the war effort, but would be a neat trick to have up your sleeve. Deploy one of these marvels, submerge and wait in ambush for that pesky escort destroyer to make an appearance! They'd never know what hit them!

Oh my bad! Aphrodite was used mainly after a radio message was sent! "Thetis" (radar decoy spar buoys) were employed during the Biscay run. These resembled a U-Boat conning tower on a British radar, much like Aphrodite, but sank after a certain amount of time making it look like the U-Boat had submerged. Typically about twelve Thetis decoys were carried.

Aphrodite is not in it, but as a bonus if you go through Gibralter posiedon willhold apart the clashing rocks to give you a better chance of getting through!

I think I read in Iron Coffins by Herbert A. Werner that they used one of these once and it was more of a hinderance than a help and they never used it again.

In Ali Cremer's book, they talk quite a bit about bold. Cremer says they fired out other bits of scrap to go along with bold, so I guess it wasn't so hollywood afterall.

Interesting. I know that several boats employed Aphrodite and Thetis, but I'd never read anything on how effective it was. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Just the theories behind the devices themselves, which seemed good.

Bold was probably one of their best ideas. I seem to remember reading about a later version of the device, using the pillenwerfer (pill thrower) to launch a small device that looked somewhat like a miniature torpedo. Instead of a warhead it carried a noisy electric motor powered by a small battery. It produced a sound much like a U-Boat running on it's motors and would circle until it's small battery was exhausted.
