Yeah I am from Townsville, but working down south atm. 290km/h wind gusts and a category 5 as it crossed the coast.

You can check http://www.abc.net.au for those interested.

Thanks for the thoughts as I still have family up that way.

Oh and by the way, another cyclone has formed near Fiji and is also currently heading for the Qld coast. Like we need that http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

I understand that the Atlantic Hurricane season has thirty year cycles and the bad times have begun again. Odd, it appears the same period of increased activity might effect the Australian Cyclone belt. The seventies had some shocking events. The most worrying aspect of which was the fact that cyclones hit much further south than usual. When they hit again (not if) they destruction will be staggering as the development around Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast etc has all taken place since then and is shockingly vulnerable to storm surges.

I can see some of it from my lounge room window. My apartment looks out onto the Telstra dome where some of the stuff is going on. Sadly, FB does not appear to be one of the events.

36 gold at the moment http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif with a total of 90 or so, compared to Britains (second place) 16 gold http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif.

But yes, good luck Queenslanders. Another bad problem is that a lot of crops have been destroyed, if I can remember correctly around $450 million worth of bananas and sugar canes. Buggery http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Well it looks like we got through the worst of it...the flooding everyone was worried about didn't happen, thank providence.

Plenty of vegetation destroyed, but no deaths and only moderate property damage.

It's not a good time to be a fruit farmer, but at least it's not Cyclone Tracey http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It's worse than Tracy! It's Category 5, whereas IIRC Tracey was a 3 or 4.
