View Full Version : I Think I've Started A Mid Life Crisis!

Just lately I have really started struggling to enjoy spending time playing this sim like I used too, and am starting to think about music again (I used to play in bands for many years as a younger man) and am spending more time listening to music and realising my enjoyment once again for guitar as I did as a teenager.

I really enjoy IL-2 and had found comfort in the fact that this was my new enjoyment, but after a few years of simming I am starting to burn out and am starting to enjoy more time with music again than spending time with simming.

I don't know exactly why I am sharing this with you all apart from I know that you guys will understand the passion for this outstanding sim and for personal interests in general. I am at this moment listening to Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" and had forgotten how passionately this album was recorded. Just yesterday I listened to "Van Halen II" and had an urge to leave my job and start a band!

God help me and my dear wife and children!

Turning 30 next year hasn't really changed my way of looking at life nor the way I think. What has helped me over the years is most likely my flexible interest in things. I build plastic modelkits, I read books about planes, watch movies about airplanes. Sometimes these interest gets dimmed down(but the never leave). My other passion is dinosaurs. This interest isn't as strong as my love for airplanes, but it is there and it has never left me. I also like to draw, and what can be more fun than make pictures of airplanes and dinosaurs. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
This sim is also a great passion of mine, but there have been times when I haven't looked at the game for nearly half a year. Eventually the passion finds its way back. Meanwhile, dinosaurs, drawing or build plastic modelkits fills this spot instead. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I hope you find enjoyement in all your interests, and that all of them can be big part of your life. Like them all at different strenghts at different times. None of them have to leave permanently!

Ah yes music..my first love, although some might say my taste is dodgy...i dont care, it can pick you up when your down and put you down when your up...especially the way i dance http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, you have to have other interests in life variety and all that...my music taste vary from 50's Rock 'n' Roll to Elvis Presley The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Who, Black Sabbath to some real obscure stuff like Bolt Thrower...depends on the mood, after all music is a mood, ive also played the guitar since i was 12 but quit a few years ago still got them sitting behind me gathering dust sadly, maybe i should start again...anyway heres some of my favs

I am one of the (un)fortunate ones that just never gave up on music. I was a lineman, a mason's apprentice, a soldier, a construction worker, a painter . . . and I started to think that I couldn't do anything right.

Then, at age 30 (!) I started college . . . . as a music major. I chose the guitar as my instrument of concentration, and got a bachelor's degree. I started working, first, in music stores giving lessons, then later making some commission from instrument sales and repair. Started playing in every band that would have me, and began my entire life all over again. I now teach the guitar at the college that awarded my degree. I play in two rock bands, and still travel to do guitar lessons in the evening.

Somewhere in the middle of all this there is still time to play IL2 and post at this board. For me, its not "this, or that", its is a matter of time management so that I can still have my 1C hobby. Don't quit flying . . . just fly higher http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Crazyschmidt, couldn't you delay the crisis until you've done a PF version of mission mate? The real problem with PF is the dearth of interesting missions and QMG maps.

I met Jimmy Page in the summer, just by chance in a carpark. Nice bloke. Didn't know me or the kids but put up with us, let us take pics, etc.

I just turned 40 and already bought the sportscar...an '04 Mustang Cobra Convertible. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We all have to do something creative to feel good about ourselves CrazySchmidt. It helps to have some Artistic expression in your life and if you don't feel like shooting down airplanes, start again when you do. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I do welding and sheet metal fabrication as a hobby and I have been restoring a 73 VW camper.

My wife and I recently had our first child, so I have a hard time finding time for the welding and have to stay inside a lot more. But I always have to be working on something or I just go snakey.

I was playing CFS1 on a Penitum 2 and really liked it. I had played F/A-18 Korea on a Pentium 1 years before and really liked it. Bought a new computer last January and got into IL2. I get to fly, I get to tinker and obsess. It's great.

Don't worry k5054, I'm still working on MM for PF, it's just that I'm doing it a little harder at the moment and it's going a little slower, but it is still coming. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

CrazySchmidt, I don't play music, but totally enjoy listening, so much that I have NEVER used any sound on my computers--I JAM stereo when I play teh FB. It helps me Relax during the Dogfight, like Oddball and his tank crews in KELLY'S HEROES.

I guess what I'm saying is why not find a way to literally "mix" the two interests--WW2 and JAM--especially if you are songwriter. Or at least do both at the same time if you must artificially confine them to seperate compartments.

---------------

No Sound saves a few fps too, and look at what happened to SkyChimp (see netwings website). His entire FP Experience was trashed by sound card corrupting his grafix during the first 4 weeks since FP releace--the tender and crucial "formative" weeks when we first experience a new "MAD_DOCS" Patch, Addon, or Pacific Sim.

I don't even have sound card. I don't even know if my new MSI-K8T-FIS2R motherboard has integrated sound, and I don't care. I have my stereo. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If someday I need FB engine sound, I have a 70 or so decibel "tornado" case cooling fan, but I don't use it on my computer cos I can't hear my stereo over it, but blasting over the cpu heatsink and cpu fan, my "tornado" does reduce cpu temperature by a good 8 degrees C.

edit -- yes my mobo does have sound, just remembered that the last half of the manual is taken up by integrated sound software instructions. No wonder so little computer sound creates so much headaches for so many.

It's amazing how many middle aged people are playing Il2. Just goes to show it's not just for kids any more.

I think every one needs creative expresion. Weither its ice sculptures or auto cad, or plastic models, or patching dry wall.

When I get IL2 burn out I rip apart my PC and rebuild it. Youo can have alot of fun mod'ing out a PC these days. And by the time I'm finnished I'm ready for another full week end of IL2.

I tried guitar when I was a teenager, but I can't hold a rythem. I found that I have a nack for fixing things so I save old stuff and fix it when I get bored. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Take a break, come back.
peace! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Hi m8,

Well, I think that I know how you feel. I go through patches like this myself. I think the problem is that we are too close to the game, too involved with working on our stuff that it takes the edge off of actually enjoying the game sometimes.

I fire up the game many, many times a day to test new graphics etc. but the ratio between doing so and actually flying is a large one. I never get the time to fly offline campaigns and only fly with my online squad on average twice a week and then only for a couple of hours. I'm very lucky that my squadmates are a great bunch of guys who support my work and are great fun to fly with else I'd probably have "imploded" by now.

Take it easy m8 and take one small step back from the game, try and make some time to FLY and have fun (I'm better at giving advise than taking my own advise LOL) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. Fire up the game and just admire the sheer beauty of the thing, combat's fun but it's such a visually beautiful game, that's the thing that has always struck me as its most lasting appeal.

Cheers m8

I really enjoyed our recent meet up and the TUI http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Leigh (Aces)

PS. Used to play drums with a few bands in my youth, still got two kits but can't play as haven't got any transport, neighbours and the Wife not too keen either LOL.

Drums/Guitar/bass/and Throat here.....

Neighbors aren't too keen on my drums.... but in the words of Murphy's Law, "**** the neighbo"-ohh nevermind.

But when my computer breaks down, jamming is always the next best thing. I don't even care if my computer doesn't work now, music is just too **** fun.

What bands do you guys most like to emulate/inspired you to play?

I'm more of a speed-freak and the like- Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Angry Samoans, Nirvana, Propagandhi, GG Allin....hehehe

Hehehe, so far the running joke is: "Music - what else do skinny pasty outsiders have to make them look somewhat cool?"

Hi Aces,

Yes I have to agree the work with the programming does mean in real terms there is little time to actually play the game as such.

It's been a long year for me and I have had a lot of uncertainty with my employment which is still hanging over me at the moment and my evenings are generally spent with IL-2 or the PC on some level or another. I guess I'm just really ready for a break. Oh well Xmas holidays are almost here and I will be getting away for a few days to recharge and then hopefully back into it at full speed again.

Cheers, CrazySchmidt. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Great post,
Yep can relate to what you said. Sometimes feels like going to work when I fire IL2 up. Don't know how you guys who do a lot of testing etc keep your interests going. Did a lot of Beta testing on F4 and it killed that sim for me to the point seeing the loading screen depresses me even now. Change is dynamic and creates "movement" maybe you just need a new video card http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

LMAO,,i know what you mean exactly!
I too am a musician (bassist)from the 80's era of metal. I am 41 now and have moved out of NYC into the sticks of PA, musicians are few and far between out here, and forget about a bunch of forty yr old guys playing old metal cover songs. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Even harder to find others who are into flight sims for some reason. Luckily i have found a real estate agent, an electrician, a chef and a railroad worker to start somthing going and play local bars and parties and maybe a wedding or two. Mind you none of these guys dont know anything about flight sims, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif but atleast we can rock twice a week on old cover tunes and some blues numbers. I find myself lurking at ebay looking for deals on bass guitars etc. Meanwhile i already own 3 of them. I just got that much back into playing music again. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I use flight simming as an escape from tapping out my wifes credit card at a music store. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I think I'm there too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

The music you guys mentioned is right up my street, and I have found myself turning my PC on to do a bit of flying, and then plugging my Bass in instead....Headphones only 'cos if I fired up the Amp my quiet Cambrideshire village would lynch me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Perhaps speaking to my now 18 yr old son after 4 yrs brought it on....I can't keep up the pretense of being twenty something any longer!!! Really good news is he is, by all accounts, a **** hot drummer - rythmn section anybody?

Edit:

Good lord, this filter is getting OTT, it won't allow me to type t!hs in the right order!!!
