This RAF site has some very interesting pictures, and a comprehensive run-though of their history. Look at the main menu for navigation to different sections of the site:

Are those training Wellingtons? The reason I ask - the nose turret seems to just have a glass fairing, no actual turret.

Wow! Excellent stuff, Thanks for the headsup!

That last turret might be a test of one of the somewhat flat 4 20mm cannon turrets but without the majority of the fairings. A number of unbuilt Vickers designs featured them in dorsal and ventral positions.

No not training. It is a Mark 1 Wellington. The turret is designed by Vickers. The same picture is used in the book - page 8

Typo? Mk Is used radial engines.

The pic is of LA250, a Mk II, modded to test a 40mm Vickers 'S' gun. The dorsal turret was to used on the Boulton-paul P.92.

Thanks for that piece of information http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I looked for pictures of it; found these. Boulton Paul P92:

Plain Mk. 1? Are those Vickers non powered turrets? There don't actually seem to be any guns in the front turret of the one in the foreground. How many plain 1s were built?

Thanks for that piece of information Smile I looked for pictures of it; found these. Boulton Paul P92:

That's the style of turret I was referring to, but as far as I remember the four cannon rather that turret (normally shown as 4 cannon in a line) was a Boulton Paul design, rather than Vickers, so I would assume, then, that the Wellington photo is, as suggested, testing a 40mm turret.

The 4 20mm cannon turret (dorsal and ventral) was supposed to form the basis of the armament of a series of bombers including the 'ideal bomber' which would have given British bombers the basic armament of 8 20mm cannon. WW2 put paid to some of these developments.

Talking about Vickers aircraft, check out the designs from Barnes Wallis for the bomber originally intended to deliver the grand slam.

Aaron,
Nash & Thomson built a wide range of turrets for aircraft. All were powered hydraulically and carried 0.303 inch (7.7 mm) Vickers K or Browning machine guns.

FN-5 - two gun nose turret on Avro Lancaster, Short Stirling and Vickers Wellington.

Might be of some interest, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Village_Inn_%28codename%29

Village Inn was the codename for the British Airborne GunLaying in Turrets (AGLT) radar-aimed gun turret fitted to some Lancaster bombers in 1944.
