Erm, i think the first IL-2 with a tailgunner was a 1943. The early ones are single seat. There is no tailgunner.

Not a bug my friend. To my knowledge the field mod version isnt modeled. Although it looks like the gunner seat from the Tb-3 so you'd think they would be able to soon....Oleg any word

Sorry, but it has never been possible. It just isn't modelled in the game. Shame really, since it would be great fun to be outside the craft like that with the sound of the wind rushing past.

I don't think it's a bug. You could never play as the gunner in the Fieldmod, even from IL-2 Sturmovik.

Edit- Everyone else types too fast.

Actually, the 1941 Field Mod is a two seater, having been modified in the field to add a place for a rear gunner in the otherwise single seat version (hence the name, "field mod") - it's actually my favorite IL-2 mount. However, since the original IL-2 game the rear gunner position in the 1941 field mod has not been playable by the user - something about not having had time and/or pictures/data to model the position, IIRC - never really understood that, especially for the "flagship" aircraft type of the whole sim, but then again, I'm not a programmer.

I just checked again in case I am going blind, but in the object viewer an il2 1941 field mod has a rear gunner, that does fire but only on auto, I tested again in the QMB and the "c" key does not do it.

I gather that it isn't modelled....

Since the days of IL2 original , you can't take control of the rear gunner in the IL2 field mod. Used to be one of my favorite because the rear gunner was very accurate , was toned down in FB so I took model 3M , or early ones. Oh , BTW , the single seat one has avesome MG's and cannons and can turnfight with any fighter out there at low speeds. Got 2 kills online with the early model , hehehehe.

Just a rough guide. 1941 Field mod was quick and dirty chop up of the single seaters supplied by Ilyushin. Can't get into the rear seat in the game. Is treated as a single seater. The guys in the field worked out what was needed before the manufacturers. As far as I know, the 57th & 198th Assault Aviation Regiments made a few crude conversions, but it was not until Autumn 1942, when the Assault Regiments of the 17th Air Army on the Southwestern Front converted 66 of them, that it became anything like standard practice. There was always a problem of changing the centre of gravity with the extra seat, especially when you consider giving the gunner some armoured protection. Gunners in Field mods had none. The type M introduced the extra seat on the production lines in September 1942, but its handling was barely acceptable, due to the change in the centre of gravity. In January 1943, this was somewhat corrected by the type 3, which introduced a new wing, swept back about 15 degrees to fix the stability problems.
