Here's one to get the creative juices flowing amoungst you lot. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

-- A great many pilots (especially USAAF pilots) named their steeds.

Inspiring trust and confidence .. i.e "Old crow'll get me home"

Examples.. Enola Gay, Glamourous Glen, Memphis Belle..

So.. what would you have flown & what would you've called it??

Personally.. I'd name my spitfire (/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) "Black Baby"..

-Thanks to Freddie; i'm a sexual spastic.

One of my favorite names bestowed upon a plane is one He-162 named "Nervenklau". Personally I have never had to trust my life to one of these machines and thus never have developed the type of bond which results from that type of relationship. It would just be another name to remeber without the genuine feeling that goes with trusting your life to a hunk of cold, lifeless, and impersonal machinery..."humanizing" it for lack of a better way to explain it...

"Cholla", as in the jumping cactus, would look pretty good on the nose of my P-47 and then the Mustang(s) that replaced it. Cholla is also referred to as 'Teddy Bear cactus', so I might add a greenish grey Teddy Bear wearing a cowboy hat with an Arizona state flag background. For the ignorant, Arizona's state flag has a dark blue lower half with bright red and yellow rays appearing to eminate from a five pointed copper star centered on top.

That's definitely unusual Boosher - what's the provenance </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

It comes from 3 girls I know, they actually saved my life and we're also great friends. So I like to think about them a lot, role models in a sort of way. "What would she do?" Type situations, but the relationship goes both ways of course. They're all in college now, but if they ever have a question on the history assignments guess who they call? It's more than that though.

It's a long story, put it this way: How could you ever sum up one of the most important friendships in your life with one word? Simple. Combine their names into a catchy phrase or name, and that's what the word means.

"Crazy Daisy" was one of the first nosearts I made, taking the DonaldDuck's Daisy and giving her a Cal50 MG in one wing, a Bomb in the other.

"American Amazon" is my P38 with another NosePainting I made.

I've never thought about it, but now I think about it I'd say I'd call my IL-2 the "Valhalla Express" seeing as how I die a lot flying the thing!

My B-25 is named "Tally Ho!"

And I name most of the axis planes I fly in the campaign as "Musta 1"

I call mine "Pope's personal transport", but probably they don't notice 'cause they shoot me down.

I used to call it "Air force One", but even my squadmates were firing.

Generally naming doesn't help. Don't know why they were doing it in WW2. For example, i named my Fieseler Storch "Fokevoulf One Ninety" and nobody seemed to have second thoughts before diving after me.

In the Luftwaffe style, my aircraft are often adorned with my personal emblem as well as the usual Geschwader symbol:

When flying British side I usually call my plane "Bite me",by the first nose art that I made, same when flying American side, thought I sometime use "CALLEN BITTE" from a name of one song made by Vuco, a local folk (and metal) singer.
When flying a il2 I call it "Mr. Steel" or simply "Steel" (probably don't have to explain why).
When it come to naming enemies (presumably those on my tail), there I have some interesting names, like "Wolf Bit*h" or simply "Bit*h" for Dora, "Up up and away" for Bf109, "Wonderboringplane" for La7/Yak3, and other (in same fashion) names

Well, a lot of times, an actual event inspires a plane's name.

I have a P-51D that I put "Bounce Buggy" on, and as nose art it has the unit insignia (somewhere in the FB files) that depicts Tigger holding a bomb

But the one I liked the most was a Mustang I named "Bobtailed Nag". I was flying a campaign mission in a P-51B, and I dove on a German bomber at very high speed. I was too close to the Gerry for comfort, and in fact the vertical tail got ripped off my plane because we collided slightly as I dove under him after my attack.
The the Mustang had it's tail bobbed. So the name was a natural, and I put it on the cowl. Extreme_One also made a custom plane for me based on the event, that had a rubber duckie on the side of the plane, and it had "Duck, Chuck!" written on the side, because I had related the incident to him (it was his Two little DUCs campaign, and I actually ducked my head down as a reflex when I zoomed under the bomber, which made me feel like an idiot, but it was a funny story)

In real life, things of this nature would end up as a name. Like "Stump Jumper". P-51 had to belly land ina field that was littered with stumps, which would have torn the plane apart. The plane missed all of them by some miracle, and it was named Stump Jumper because it must have jumped all the stumps.

So usually, you can just fly some missions and let the plane name itself http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I also have an AVG H-81 named "China Doll" but that's from an A-2 jacket I painted years ago

Spit IX named Bf-Eater. (you might have to say it to yourself to get it.)

Red Skin with Gold piping (well it would have if I was any good at skinning.)

No matter the bird, I guess I'd be taking the Ira Bong approach to naming it. The nose art would be a little more revealing though.

"Deadly Dorothy" like in the sig below.

I think no matter what I was flyen at the time.
It would be called (Sweet Tooth) after the game Twisted Metal.
Clown face with the flame job hairdoo just below, and forward the cockpit on both sides.
With the name rapped underneath.
The plane I like the best is the FW190A-8
