Used to live near RAF Coninsby in Lincolnshire, grew up with the sound of Merlins, love em.

Pity the sound isn't correct in game but that a small price to pay for such a sweet plane, especially the VIII

I love the Spitfire too, and it has always been one of my favorite planes. I'm glad you fly what you like, because ultimately that's why we SHOULD be flying this flight sim.

The Spitfire was described by many airmen, both Allied and German, to be an "uber-plane" in handling and performance. It, indeed, was a very easy plane to fly compared to many other aircraft. In the game, it represents that rather well; the Spitfire has very agreeable flight characteristics, it is very forgiving, and it has quite acceptable performance parameters.

As much as I love the Spit, I love a challenge even more. I like to fly some tougher planes such as the Fw-190, because I love the satisfaction you get from flying a tough plane that not everyone has the nerves or patience to fly properly.

Don't get me wrong, I do fly the Spitfire, and I don't care what people say about that. But ultimately, I feel that I learn a lot more flying more labor intensive planes such as the Fw190.

The only beef I have with people who fly easy planes ONLY, is that I believe they are missing out on some really excellent planes that would give them a wealth of experience and knowledge, should they seriously try them out. You're really limiting yourself, and your skillset by sticking to one easy aircraft. It sort of becomes a crutch in the long run. Just visit the first best "Cockpit Off" server, and you'll find the usual mix of Spits, La's, Yak's, and Ki84's all below 1000 meters, having a who-can-turn-tighter contest. That really tells you a lot about the pilots who fly these airplanes. But I'm not here to judge, or even care, who flies what. I don't care if the Spit is your only ride, or one of many. All I really want is people to fly what they like, but also not to be afraid to expand their horizons.

And Lav69, in response to an earlier comment you made, in which you stated that I was whining about "n00bs" furballing it on the deck because I kept getting owned... If I were to get owned by pilots in such a manner, I'd be much more concerned about learning to fly better than whining on the Ubi forums. Instead, I was whining because I was tired of the hordes of easy kills I was scoring left and right. Fact. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Nothing wrong with the Spit (I tend to fly mk VIII for land missions, Seafire on Carriers). I am relatively new to the genre, this being my first flight sim for many years (Sinclair Spectrum days no less!). I find the aircraft to be a marvellous blend of speed and agility, although I must admit to not having flown other aircraft extensively yet. I have however flown the Hurricane (Brit you see, National Pride and all that) quite a bit, along with the wonderful Mustang. Zero is ok, but I really have not got around to flying anything else except for short bursts.

I will try others in Pacific Fighters, and I intend to get Forgotten Battles, as I would like to try Bf109, Fw190, Stuka, Yak and so on.
Reckon these Sims are going to keep me going for months yet, I have'nt touched any of my other games for weeks!! I do however need to read some tactic guides, because as soon as an enemy aircraft gets on my tail, I'm toast, no matter what plane I am in! But so far for me, the Spit is King.

Well, I prefer the 109Fs and 190 a4 but I do like the Spits. The only thing I don`t like about them in the game is the sound model. It has very good stall characteristics, can turn well, and looks good, but the sound is bad, kinda like the P51s. Did they really sound like environmentally friendly 4 cylinders?

I think LStarosta makes some good points.

I love the Spit. All of them. Best combo of speed, handling, and fire power IMO. But...the point he makes about the rewards of flying the "tougher" planes is well taken. I constantly get my a** handed to me by 190 jocks. No way a Spit can keep up with a 190 stud who knows how to fly that beast. I just watch in awe as they tear me to bits. So...I decided to take the 190 plunge. I will suck big time (even more than I do now lol) for a long time, but what a superb plane the 190 series is. Thanks LStarosta for your comments. You got me motivated.

Spits are great planes, make no mistake.

They're gorgeous, they handle well, they do almost everything at least "good", if not excellent, and they are the natural foil for a 109 jock (like myself).

Although I like to fly the Spit from time to time I also like flying against it. I love to meet a Spit when I´m flying the 109. Also the same when I`m flying the Spit, my favorite opponent is the 109. The difference is that the 109 pilots are usually better. the 109 has been around a lot longer and the pilots are very used to their plane. The Spit is still relatively new and the pilots are don`t have the experience. I`m looking forward to the Spit pilots improving their fight.

Yaaawn. Yeah well the MkIX was introduced in mid-42 so big deal if a '44 LW plane well flown can deal with it. A '44 contemporary would be the MK XIV. Or a Tempest V.

Now, it is true that some poor dears charge around in late '44 Luft chariots claiming to be god's own gift when they own a '42 Spit flown by some guy who just got the wrapper off the box the CD-ROM came in, and that they sometimes mistake this local peculiarity for actual superiority. But they're wrong. Now please select an option from below:

A. Spit lovers, group hug, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif and don't listen to the nasty Fockers.

B. Nasty Fockers, this isn't the thread you're looking for. You can go about your business, move along now.

I'm not ashamed of the fact I fly a Spitfire either, it's a great 'plane, with a great history and I'd fly it however its flight model was. There's no getting away from the fact it was a good 'plane though, so I guess it's only right that the flight model reflects this.

I can't wait for the Mk1 personally, if it means waiting for BOB, then that's fair enough, but it'd be really nice in FBAEPPF.

The spitfire is a legend in the UK where I live. In the 50 years of my life I have seen them fly over many times and each time i have wished i could fly in one.
To be able to fly a spitfire in a war simulation which is more realistic than anyone could have emagined even 10 years ago, is a dream come true for me.
Why should i care if everone thinks that the spit is easy to fly, because that is why it was so successful and why it is also successful in our sim. Did we stop flying spitfires because the Germans could not build a better plane? I think not.
you will now find me on the Warclouds server having the time of my life with all the other spitfire pilots, looking for 190 and 109s who dont seam to have any problems fighting spitfires.

If you havent been on Warclouds before you should try it and if you have, go back its changed for the better.

By the way I now fly as "Blue-Lexus". I will change things here to match soon.

I don't think so.. If you look GG and WC you will see that 109 are only 20% to 30% of blue fighters. And sicne lots of people are using 190 in close in fight.. is not strange they feel overhelmed by spit 9 on this condition. The only 190 that can fight a Spit 9 CLOSE-IN is the dora.

I don't think MKIV will change things so much. It is heavier and probably handles a little bit worse (even if turn radius is the same due to increased engine power). So will be something between the Spit9 and P51D in every aspect. BEtween both on maneuverability, speed etc..

The only thing he will do is make MK IX disapear from servers!!! To avoid this some maps with no XIV or with XIV bases little bit farther away must be used.

It would be sooo good to have limtis on planes online. Put 4 Spit 14 per map,.. 2 ME262 per map, 4 K4 per map.. etc... That would be the holy grail of online playing.

DO not dare to feel ashamed of flying the Spitfire IXe.

In the BF-109K4, i KNOW that my plane is better than yours. It is faster, outclimbs, and out guns you. The reason I get shot down in it is, I tried to turn with Spitfires, and got beat by a better pilot. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Don't listen to blue-only Luft-b1tches who cry about being shot down when they get outturned by a Spitfire.

The Spitfire IXe is outclassed in this game, and in real life by late-war LW planes.

Lufties don't want the XIV. They can't handel the XIV.

It's all well and good that people who like the Spit have no apologies for it. I have no problem with anyone who honestly likes it because it's easy to fight in and get kills with (same as for the 'Stang, La-5fn, Yak-3, Dora, etc.). But nobody should then delude themselves into thinking they're some kind of great online aces. That's the tradeoff. Fly an ubernoob plane and have fun. Fly something more challenging (early to mid 109s for example) and be good in it and then you are a mofo.

All that aside though, there really has been a lot of ridiculous stuff on some of the more popular servers. Like 22 guys on red all flying their beloved Spits and 'Stangs and 8 guys on blue. And then when you ask for some of them to even the sides you get stuff like: "I don't support no Nazi planes." (I kid you not, I really saw this chat online.) Or "I don't know how to fly LW. LOL!" As if there should just be some blue guys around for them to shoot down so they can feel all John Wayne about winning the war again. Sheesh! It's frustrating! Fly blue once in a while (something other than the late war planes, I don't like them K4s etc.) and gain a real appreciation for how easy it is to ride in the Spit. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Actually Fragal, that`s an interesting point and one of my pet peeves. But this sin`t limited to Luftlovers. I`ve played servers where every one is flying the same plane; 20 bf109s, or 20 Spits, or 20 of whatever in "each man for himself" death match. It never seemed to be too logical in my opinion.

When I`m flying a 109 I want to be good against a Spit, and in a Spit I wanna be good against a 109. I made a suggestion to my club that each pilot take the responsibility to become good in 2 axis and 2 allied birds and we always even the numbers when we come online. I chose the 109G6, 190A4, Spit(early model), and the P40. In summary; no one listened, so much for logic. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

anyways, back to the topic, Spits are my all time, most favorite, most hunted plane to shoot down! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif
