The VALUE of IL2/IL2:FB Or, why it is foolish/unfair to complain about paying for some Oleg Addons when they become available:

I am one who would be perfectly willing to pay for "Approved" add-ons, both in terms of acft as well as new maps/theaters/campaigns, etc...

I always use this example: the next time you go out for a Good Dinner and a movie(usually not so good, these days) with the spouse or date, you will spend at least US$75, varying only slightly by location...bring along your two kids (or add on Babysitting fee plus tip) and you will be looking at well over a hundred bucks....all for just one evening of relative enjoyment. For a mere US$40, I personally got 15 months of IL2 enjoyment (Easily more than a thousand, perhaps a few thousand hours of 'flying'), and then since February of this year another several hundred hours of FB fun for a mere additional $40. By the time that I might Buy any upcoming "FB pay-AddOn", say before Xmas, I will just then be matching that Hypothetical One-Night-Dinner-and-a-Movie-with-the-Kids expenditure. One night, versus what will be much more than two years, probably three years of fun!! How can you beat it...

Or, try a mere two rounds of golf on a weekend for easily $150 Plus!

A Good, or Great, software game/simulation product is the Best Entertainment Value around these days, by far!...and, FB is definitely a Great One. (beware the CFS3-type, though...that would be comparable to having done the "Dinner" and gotten Salmonella food poisoning for your money! IMHO).

SO WHY all the whining on these forums by people wanting everything for Freeeeee !!

You won't hear any whining from this guy. I've only gotten IL-2 as of yet, which I paid $20 for recently. I love it, and I think it's worth more than I shelled out for it because I know I'll be playing it months if not years from now. I'll soon be getting FB and I have every reason to believe that the same will be true for it as well.

AND... I'll gladly pay for any add-on to either of these fine games that has Oleg's name on it. There is nothing to whine about.

I agree. True, FB will give many hours of enjoyment. But in my case, I gotta spend close to $300 US to upgrade my system to play FB. I don't mind spending a little for an addon, but more than 20 us would be excessive.

Wow wiley, you sure spend a lot on dinner and a movie. but your correct that the entertainment value of IL2 is far superior per dollar than dinner and a movie.

I think my cost has been about 15 cents per hour played!
How's that for value?

Of course that doesnt include new audigy2 and 9500pro.
But hey ... what are you gonna do when you want to run AA and AF at 1600x1200?

You got me to thinking if what I quickly estimated in my first post might have been wrong....so I broke it down. It IS shocking!!!

Movie tickets $8.75 x 2 = $17.50
One large Movie-softdrink(shared)$4.00 = $ 4.00
Alcohol drink before dinner $4.50 x2 = $ 9.00
Dinner (entree) $12.95 x2 = $26.00
Glass of wine or second drink w/dinner x2 = $ 9.00
One Dessert(shared) $4.95 = $ 5.00
Tip 20% = $10.00

Sub-total for dinner and movie for Two = $80.50

Baby sitter,5 hours@$4.00 plus tip of $5 = $25.00 Sub-total for dinner/movie/babysitter = $105.00

Or:
Two child movie tickets @5.00 = $10.00
Two child small movie-softdrinks = $ 6.50
Two Child dinners plus drinks = $12.00
Two desserts = $ 6.00
Additional Tip = $ 3.00
Sub-total for dinner/movie/2Children = $37.50

Sub-total for dinner/movie/2Adults+2Children = $118.00

Make it a special occasion, a somewhat fancier restaurant, an upgraded meal selection, appetizers, bottle of medium quality wine instead of 2 glasses of house wine, and desserts for Four(versus three), valet parking Tip, and a family of four is gonna run $175...

As I said, what's a mere $40 for a quality Sim or Sim upgrade compared to that! FB equals VALUE.

That is the great thing about freedom of choice:

You don't want it - don't buy it!

I'm sure many more would like it and certainly buy it - like me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Without much competition right now, it leaves the ball in their court.

My only issue I have is: make the nonflyables flyable!!!!

I consider nonflyables as incomplete.

There is so much in FB that hasn't been utilized in this regard - but as long as the focus is on fighters instead of bombers, I doubt we'll see the potential realized.

So, the value of FB is not reached yet until it's complete imo. ie.

It was good to see the p47 added, however, without a high altitude game to contest high altitude bombers...what good is it really except for FB to say "We feature a p47"?

We have learned the value of low level altitude fighting to stop il2's http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

i agree, 20 bucks would be a steal for any substantial addon

i remember paying full price (almost 50 bucks) for each and every addon that came out for falcon3.0 and finding that not a penny too much spent

I agree, I haven't bought many games recently I get just bored of pretty much anything that isn't a flight sim. For around $20 for an addon that provides more theatres, planes, fun hours a day for the next year or so is a bargain. I mean heck, I spend about $20 a month on just junk food /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif .

I'm a member of the group that doesn't mind paying for tha addons.

How could I complain? I've spent who knows how much on my PC over the last year and a half, for the sole reason of playing IL2/FB. My older (non-FB) PC does just fine for my 'actual' work needs, everything above my work needs IMO is just a 'toy'.

Compared to the $1000 in upgrades that my 'toy' PC has cost me, $40 for Forgotten Battles is nothing. And another $20 or $40 or whatever in future upgrades is also nothing. For without them, my spending on PC upgrades has been wasted, since I've played only FB, and no other PC games for the past year!

I agree with Wiley /i/smilies/16x16_robot-surprised.gif

He forgot something though:

1- the computer needed to play (true, you can share the value over the games other than FB)

2- While you play, you need your wife/kids to be busy, and they might go out ..../i/smilies/16x16_robot-surprised.gif

3- The Value in FB : Your pleasure. Priceless
