Will be online on December 31st at 1.00am GMT.
At long last, it's here. This has dominated my life for the last three months. Due to major work committments, I have had to scrape an hour here and there to try and get this project complete, and I fully intend on taking a major well-earned rest.
"Secret weapon over Stalingrad" is about a German Nuclear bomber heading towards the city and only two P40 fighter's stand in it's way. Please make the effort to post feedback on this movie, whether you like it or not, but any feedback is better than none.
I have used the old film look for the movie (colour desaturation and slight soft effect) to add a touch of realism. There is only one colour-keyed scene in the movie (tracking the bombs down), but I like it so it's in.
Unfortunately, I had to split the movie into two files, due to lack of webspace, but the quality has been sustained because of this.
The movie runs for 14mins and 30secs and is encoded in the XVID Codec.
Captured using Fraps 1.9D, I had to then capture every piece of audio manually, and insert it back onto the timeline. I first ran through it and put audio in for P40's. This required audio for ; Pan left to right, Pan right to left, external audio (f2 view), external audio firing, cockpit audio flying, cockpit audio firing. This had to be done for all planes in the film. I then, put ricochet sounds, wind, bombs, collisions, music and finally voices into the soundtrack. Motion sketching was then used for big hits, and camera drift while flying.
The movie can be downloaded from my website at

http://www.aqqm31.dsl.pipex.com

Enjoy, and please don't forget to respond, thanks.

If anyone would like to host, feel free.
If anybody links to it on another site can you please copy the full html link. It contains a script so I can monitor how many times it has been downloaded.

very awesome movie dude ... i TOTALLY loved it

great action , fast paced , excellent footage , excellent use of effects , excellent use of AI communications

& a great story line backed up with a good set of action to play it out

one thing ... how the Hell did you get the camera to follow the bombs down from the JU-88

it was the shot of the movie for me ! ! ! !

dude thx a LOT for making this available for us

i am soooo going to be keeping it , one of the very best

This is an absolute work of art.

For sure, the money shot has to be the ju88 bomb drop in Pt. 1. Is this a composite shot? Please give details about how you went about producing this film!

When I seen the Pe-8 lumbering over Stalingrad I got chills! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Overall, excellent camera work. I especially liked the shot at 4:25 in pt. 2 of the Pe-8. Great demonstration of the bomber's sheer size.

Neil Pugh must have spent some long nights in Stalingrad... You probably can draw a map of Stalingrad with your eyes closed! Or, at least you should know where every smokestack is located! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for sharing this spectacular film Mysticpuma!!

Great work MysticPuma! This is really a well done movie, the action is excellent, the soundtrack too.

I can only see 2 weak points :

When German planes are going down, it's always/almost the same distress message that we hear and it's a bit repetitive. You could improve that by "pasting" new distress messages over the original soundtrack. In the directory \IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\samples\Speech\DE, there is a lot of different "I'm hit, I'm hit" messages and it could add more diversity.

Second point, I didn't read a lot of stuff about WW2, but US planes over Stalingrad seems to be Sci-Fi. Or maybe you wanted to add an Hollywood touch like "The Amercians saved the world once again"?

Pretty cool MP. The best I've seen. The post production work was quite nice. If you have my luck, you must have bailed from that P-40 200 times before you got it to hit the Pe-8 and not kill the pilot in the air. With only a few exceptions, the flow was well thought out and easy to follow.

I can't believe you used Fraps for that! When watching it, I did notice that the fly-bys audio seemed to always sound the same, but I just chalked it up to the sound problems in IL-2. Sometimes I have to turn off extensions and turn the # of channels down to 8 to keep it from bouncing the sound from left to right. Only when I read your post more carefully did I realize the reason.

The chroma key shot following the bombs down is a great idea. In the words of Stephen Hawking, "I may have to steal it from you"!

The anti-aircraft battery taking out the 109 that was moving on the P-40 was super cool.

The 109 pilot lying on the ground next to his crashed aircraft was a great piece of work.

The black and white "gun camera" shots worked in were very effective for those who have seen real footage before. When it first started I thought it might be some real footage.

I am very jealous and hope my first release will be as nice.

From one movie maker to another, here are a few things that didn't work for me.

The repetitive voice chatter detracted from the amazing visuals. I would have stuck with voice for only a few characters to cut down on the repetitiveness, or, got some friends to do new audio. Also, there were too many "generic" voice comments like "attacking now", "target on fire", and "he's going down" that seemed redundant given the video.

This is just nitpicking, but, as someone who goes for the ultra realistic, I feel that too many movie makers go for the really cool shots of bombers breaking up into a billion pieces and/or blowing up in a giant fireball too often. Although visually stunning, I don't think it happened that often. Yes, over the whole war it happened many times, but over a few minutes in a single furball, it's too much. I call this nitpicking since I realize how difficult it is to accomplish since the AI won't cooperate.

There were too many 109s hitting the smokestacks. Only one of those is needed.

Overall, truly stunning!

Great job! The amount of production involved must have been goliath. The amount of work in after effects alone must have been daunting.

I really enjoyed the movie. Lots of action and a great use of special effects. I saw that you used Fraps 1.9D(no sound) WOW! the amount of sound work involved, well I'm preaching to the choir http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Loved the treated film look and the time of day choice was excellent. So many truly great shots and great use of wobble in the explosions and the long camera shots.

Overall a top notch product with high enjoyment value. S! Mystic for your fantastic vision!

Simply Breath Taking.......Outstanding Video Puma.

Your BEST!! without a doubt. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

First I love the P-40 skins you use with the skulls look on the engine exhaust area.

I also love the dogfighting between the fleeing P-40's and the Me-109's chasing in and around the city of Stalingrad Smoke Stacks.
Simply awesome footage!

The black and white "GunCam" shots were superb...look like real footage at times.

OKAY!!......OKAY Puma ...How did you get that footage of the flying bombs, and the interior "Gun Turret" shots.

That was again superb footage! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Puma....when you get some rest from making this movie.....and get past the New Year partying....you need...well please....let us know how you did some of your techiques in your latest Greatest Virtual Film.

Truelly an action packed IL2 film! Every second was in a dynamic tour de force of aerial combat as found in the simulator! Great cinematics used and great sound effects! Liked the sound bits voices from other movies in the movie.

Good work, well worth your time and efforts! Felt like I just came out of the movie theatre!

I've been waiting for this since you posted the teaser/trailer.
What can I say? Words don't begin to adequately convey just how awesomely cool this film is!
Some of the things I especailly loved...
1. Falling with the bombs. I haven't had that experience since European Air War. What a ride!
2. Seeing the pilot being ejected from the 109 as it hit the ground. Did you time a bailout or is this another of this games wonderful features that I have missed? If a timed bailout...excellent work! If not, excellent 'frameography'!
3. The close-up of the AAA firing.
4. The "cracked lens screen" effect during a bomb strike.
5. The sound of shell casings being ejected.
Overall excellence throughout. This film is my leading candidate for "Film Of The Year".

~S~ Mysticpuma! It certainly was worth the wait!

I pretty much agree with everyone who has posted so far, pros and cons, it's still superb work! One thing I noticed, the P-40E models have the antenna? wires still showing when a wing or tail is missing, not your fault, it's the games. The P-40M, though, has reduced wires on the a/c. Might've been a better choice. Over all, fantastic!

Exciting, beautiful, and one of, if not
the best movie made with this game yet. As for the plot, with the Yanks being the ones chasing the menace over Stallingrad, of course it is fantasy. So is a captured Pe-8 carrying a nuke. It is a STORY. And a darn good one, at that. A very cool ending as well . . . I won't give it away and ruin it for those that haven't seen it yet, but a very heroic ending!

Salute!

watched it a few times now & the only visual thing i can say that might have been better is ...

1) the P-40 wires whent its tail gets shot off

2) the fully zoomed back view shows a weird bulging on the curve of the earth when you pan around in the cockpit

Yes. Very, very good. The ground escape of the bogeys was predictable, but still great. Nice use of music and speech effects- was there some special speech in there? Definitely speech i`ve never heard before.
Anyway, a great movie.

Guys, thanks for the mostly positive feedback.
I new when I started this project in September that it was going to be special, after I played through some of the tracks that I had recorded. In case anyone hasn't seen the thread in Movie Makers forum, here is a really brief summary of the problems I faced.

Prepare for an epic post, sorry!

I started work on the original, capturing video out to my DV camera, then improting it back in to edit. This worked well initially because I had all the in-game audio attached to the video file. However, after working through the final edit and outputting it to DV film, I noticed two things that would wreck the final version. For some reason there was refresh problem on the screen draw. This meant that a quarter of the screen was drawn before the other tgree-quarters. I went through the entire 14 minutes (21,750 frames) of video and removed frame by frame the re-draw affected sections. While doing this, I noticed that sometimes as many as 1-in-3 frames had been doubled up, so I removed those as-well. The video was then completed. I showed Scragbat the finished project on November 11th, but deep down I knew that it could (and should) have been better.
Taking a huge decision, I scrapped the complete video and started fom scratch.
I used Fraps 1.9D, which doesn't capture sound, and went through all the tracks with a fine tooth-comb to sift out the best moments and recapture them. When completed I had approx 160GB of video to edit down. I started this process on November 20th and finished the video edit on December 10th. I then went onto the audio edit. As you can see from the original post, every aspect of audio had to be captured, and this was done using the dv camcorder, so that I could reference the video to the sounds.
I flew a P40 with unlimited ammo, and captured to DV camera the following audio samples for one-minute each. The F2 view for external engine sound, F3 view left-to-right and right-to-left, then in cockpit and then all of these samples with the plane firing it's guns. This accounts for all the P40 audio. I then had to do the same for He-111 and Ju88. The belly gunner of the bomber was a He-111 being flown by me in a quick mission against a P40 fighter. Luckily this was done in one take, as I flew the plane high to make the P40 climb, then I changed to the gunner position and loosed the cannon of at him. It fitted perfectly with the smoking No.15 P40 that catches fire. Again the cannon audio was captured for this.
The bomb camera took about two-hours to start and finish, which amazed me. It's a combination of after effects, photoshop and Media Studio Pro 7.
The bombs were screen grabbed, and pasted into Photoshop against a blue background. Then I brought them back into media studio pro. Next, I flew a He-111 with no-cockpit view selected into Stalingrad. I bought this into Media Studio Pro and used it on the Video A layer. The bombs with blue-screen, were placed on the Overlay channels (I think there were five but it could have been six), and the colour blue was 'keyed' out. This gave me the bombs against a video of the no-cockpit view He-111 heading to the ground. Of course this looks like just the bombs moving through the air. Next every bomb layer was given a motion path from either top -to-bottom or left-to-right (but a little more random). I then rendered the sequence. Next I placed that into after effects and the lens flare was added using keyframes to track the bomb edge. After rendering that sequence, I bought the rendered video back in and added camera shake. I have to say it worked better than I thought.
The one explosion that I needed to use another piece of software for was the flak cannon getting destroyed. To obliterate the cannon I needed a huge explosion created by Particle Illusion. I then used the rendered sequence on the Video A and an Overlay track of MSPro.
Video A was then blurred hugely, and the overlay track had a video filter (called shatter) applied to it. I keyframed the filter so that it didn't animate, it just 'broke', and this was composited with the blurred video so that it goes from sharp to out-of-focus through the broken lens.
Pe-8 sequence. The shot that nearly broke me, it really did.

WhtBoy guessed I must have flown that mission 200 times, well you're not far wrong. The last piece of video as the pilot bails out, and the plane collides took 9 hours to film, for about 5 seconds of video. The only way to make the sequence was to have vulnerabilty switched on, because I tried it off and the P40 could always be seen intact sweeping through the Pe-8 debris. Flying towards the Pe-8, the A.I controlled Red 02 was a crackshot and would neatly saw a wing off the bomber before I could get close enough. This meant that I had to restart the mission. I then (and it hurts me to say it) had to shoot Red 02, so that I could attack the bomber on my own. The video sequence where he flames and explodes, fortunately, was a direct hit from the Pe-8. So now I'm flying in towards the Pe-8, the four rear facing gunners shoot my engine and I die. Back to square one. Start again. Repeat ad-infinitum until at last I get close enough to collide. I bail, and my plane misses the Pe-8. DOH! Try again, and again, and again, etc,. Finally I did it. The planes coolide, the P40 saws the right wing off, the Pe-8 falters.........and drops the bomb.......aaaaaaaaggggggghhhhhh! Start again. You get the idea. But evenetually, nine-hours later I got the shot you see in the film.

Anyway guys, it's here, complete and done.

rick_475 about the repetative voices.
Well, during the making of this movie I realised that most videos that are online are Fraps captured but use a musical score (you know why now when you see the amount of audio needed to be captured), so I thought if I'm going to make another movie then why not go all the way and do it all. I did take the German voices from the DE folder, and most of the footage has bombers being taken down, or 109's destroyed. The voices are saying for example 'bail out, bail out,Im hit, I am bailing out, We are bailing out, get him off, I am on fire, help, damn etc. I chose different actors voices where possible, but the in-game speech is not extensive, so I did the best I could, I understand that they may be samey, but I hope it doesn't detract too-much from what I set out to achieve.

WhtBoy mentions too many fireballs and explosions. Well, I intentionally set out to make an action movie, and explosions and bombers falling to pieces are part of the game, so they're in the movie. Again, it's all about impact, and that is what I hope I have achieved.

Rik_475 also said the United States saves the day again. Well this wasn't about a country, just a story that I wanted to create. My first movie "Against all Odds" was about the Luftwaffe destoying British bombers, and ultimately winning the fight in the film. I am from the U.K, so if I made movies for country bias that scenario wouldn't have happened.
I knew that Scragbat was working on a Russians defeat Germans storyline, and didn't want to make a film that could be looked at as "another Russians beat the Germans" movie, so I moved towards the film that you see.
I had already flown the P40 v bombers mission in August, and knowing how good the footage I could capture from the tracks was, I set-off to make a movie around this. So, I have covered Germany being victorious in my first movie, now we have the United States.....who knows what's next! It's a fictional story, but it was made to entertain, and that is ultimately what I hope I have done for the IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles community.

Guys, constructive comments are appreciated so thanks for taking the time to reply. Please keep the feedback coming, and if Oleg Maddox would like me to make his promotional movie for Battle of Britain, my e-mails at the end of the film...... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well,
What can I say? I think the bar is right on the top notch and probably can't go any higher.
I just had a go but can't get over it. I need to re-train http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
There's no point in me repeating what has already been said. Suffice to say that this is probably the best darn movie out. Download it 56k'ers if you know what's good for you!!

There always seems to be a sweet shot in the top movies out. Something that really steals the show, and without a doubt it is the 'MysticPuma2003 Bomb-Cam View' (given it a name for you Puma!!).

Some of you guys know that me and Mysticpuma work in the same office, and I can tell you I know how he did that shot! We discussed the production on that one (all his own work though on that one, no input from me).
The guy was so excited about it, he couldn't keep quiet about it!
Yes Puma! We're all gonna do that shot now http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Mysticpuma has sweated blood and tears for this and JRJacobs can really sympathise with him when I tell you that his wife was not too pleased with the time he spent on it. PC rationing was order of the day, not too mention that thing called work getting in the way too.

Enjoy your break Puma.
He has told me that this is his swan song. There will be no more MysticPuma productions.
Yeah right!

PS I'm doing SOUND!!!!!!!! I'm doing SOUND!!!!!!!! Got no choice now have I?

Congratulations ! Mysticpuma for Oscar - I have only just seen this as i'm a 56k'er and it took near enough 6 hours to download http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif but it was well worth the wait. Stunning action, even if the storyline was implausible, and a real advert for the realism and complexity of the sim software. I loved the bit in part 1 with the He111 exploding which copied the same event in the movie Dark Blue World ie. massive thumping explosion and the prop comes whirling off the plane towards you - did you use Dark Blue World as the inspiration/sound source for this snippet of video ?

Anyway, a stunning movie and easily the new benchmark for all future movies - looking forward to the next one.........Cheers MBV

Blimey, I know it's good when Leadspitter visits and says "definately the best one I've seen". Thanks for that,in reply I have to say that I have downloaded a few of your skins from Il2skins.com, and know that you appreciate hard-work. I can see that from your skill when it comes to historically accurate designs.
Scragbat, thanks for the "Mysticpuma2003 Bomb-Cam view"....lol.The problem I have is that every time I raise the bar, you always attempt a new world record height. We'll have to do poll and see if the viewers want us to team-up for one last movie, what do you think?

MadBadVlad, I haven't seen Dark Blue World, where can I get it? Sounds like it could be worth a watch.

I have to say sorry for the fact that I split the video into two parts. Unfortunately, I only have 50mb of web-space, and when I compressed the video down to that size, it seemed pointless the effort I had made in the visual-imagery. A friend who had a spare 50mb has let me use it, so that enabled me to up the file-size, but obviously I had to split this and put one on my web-space and the other on his.
Really thanks, so much for all you feedback, good and bad, criticism taken in the right way, can only help a person improve.
What planes would you like to see in another movie....if I ever make one....let me know.
Cheers again, Mysticpuma.

Raven: A recreation film called "Secret Weapon over Stalingrad" which explores the scenerio of the Germans getting the atom bomb and how that issue would be addressed by the allies.. Quite remarkable really...

Wife: Uh-huh, Raven.. I dont believe you...

Yes, the pipex web service is down at the moment. This is out of my hands, sorry. However they have been informed of this and are currently working on the problem and cross-fingers it should be up in the next couple of hours. THis was posted at 3.01pm GMT. Got to say it's p***ing me off at the moment and I hope to move to another provider (who will give me 100mb of space) so I can upload the movie as a single file. However, why are those P-40s in American markings and those pilots speaking English? I thought it was a little bit out of cnotext since the battle is on the Eastern Front. Nonetheless, I wish I could make as good stuff as You! 'S!
