View Full Version : PE2 Dive Bombing Target

Sorry if this has already been asked (I missed it)

While dive bombing in the PE2, I've used the gun sight as a point of reference with bad results. Are those red rubber balls on the control dash designed to set references?

My experience has been bombs falling way off from what the gun sight is seeing. If I get down low enough to hit the broad side of a barn, I get pranged. I watched AIs in Pe2's and they all missed their targets and flew away with fuel leaks from bomb damage (thier own).

I pick my target, roll over, extend air brakes, drop straight, release and miss over and over again. I've had good luck in a Stuka, IL2 or anything else.

I've also tried to shoot stuff up with the PE2 guns with little effect. Makes you love the IL2 even more.

Any help is welcome....

Ok. first of all, Are you having the gunsight centerd? Press Shift+F1 to do so. Second of all, unless you go in a perfect straight 90 degrees to the earth, your bombs are not going to fall exactly 'in' the crosshair. Most dive bombing occured under a certain angle, like 80 degrees instead. Your bombs will then fall a little below the crosshair. So you should also line up your target slightly below your crosshair.

That's about all of the advice one can give without showing pics or tracks. The quickest way to fine-tune your mud-moving techniques, is to go to the QMB, select the arcraft and ordnance of your choice and set the target to 'armor' and the map to 'crimea' and your side to 'allied'. You can also set your starting altitude. Set it to at least 3000m (about 12000 feet) for some divebombing. 4000m is better tough. That is what I always do anyways. When the mission starts, you are roughly above a river, flying towards the sea. A column of soft skinned vehicles from the field to your left and is heading straight for the first bridge you come across. You can use that column as a target. But the vehicles are is moving, the bridge will be a very good target also.

Thanks, I'll give that a try for some practice. My bombs are actually falling off to one side all of the time. I've been flying the PE2 naval career in the Baltic and the bombs are always right where I want them, but off to the left or right, which is maddening. Huge blast of water right off the side of the ship and no damage.

I dropped too low on one run lost all my fuel, had to crash land, managed not to get captured but at least sunk a ship http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

Make sure you are coordinated (no sideslip) when you drop the bombs. If you are slipping left or right (depends on speed and trim setting) the bombs will be off.

Practice Practice. But, as the Training movie for Pe-2 says, sights are not perfect. Adjust your aim using experience. Or, as the Jedi would say, "Trust your feelings."

DIVE BOMBING is much more simpler than level bombing though.

I decided to try doing LEVEL BOMBING with a gunsight for the first time and after a few hours of practice I finally got it figured out. You have to be quick to input the altitude, airspeed, bomsight distance though.
It's quite a challenge but very gratifying when you hit the bullseye!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Like plat said...don't touch your rudder in a dive until you are completely practiced at hitting your target without it.

Sideslip (or movement off the Z axis) will always screw up your results!

The reason most attack aircraft designed for dive attacks have dive brakes, is to control vertical speed in a dive, so that the pilot had enough time to aim the nose at the target, at 90 degrees to the horizon, and drop his bombs withouth locking his controls up or becoming a lawn dart.

Try cutting your throttle to zero in normal fighers when dive attacking.

I dont do level bombing anymore, I enter the target area, climb almost to stall above the target, cut engines, and nose down until I have a pure 90 degree straight down solution, give the aircraft a few hundred km/h, and drop bombs.

Its a 100 success rate. Completely unrealistic, but it works.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Here's what I do in all dive bombers which seems to work well:

-Start around 14k ft
-Trim - All neutral (there are keys for this)
-Elevator Trim - 8 clicks nosedown
-Throttle 0
-Pitch 100
-Divebrakes out
-Push over, add more nosetrim as needed for a basically neutral stick with VERY slight climb tendency
-aim with aelerons only
-Drop and fly away

Don't know if it's realistic, but I have about an 90% success rate doing this releasing at rather high 2000-3000 ft in the VAL, SBD and Stuka. Haven't flown Pe-2 much but I remember it being pretty much the same (just stay off the rudder).

I use this method with the Pe-2 I can regularly hit single tanks with ease. Ships are so huge its usually a guarnteed hit, even the small gun boats. I think the Pe-2 is an excellent dive bomber. Also keep in mind that I use full realism.

This is for Ships:

1. Identify target course.
2. Fly parallel at 4000 meters or so.
3. FLy overhead until target passes under, usually hidden by control column (Pe-2).
4. Roll inverted, cut throttle, extend airbrakes, (no absolute order).
5. Pull nose down to target, keep pulling until your crosshairs pass the stern, your now opposite the targets course, moving away, 80 degrees or so vert.
6. Now roll back to the target 180 degrees, 80 degree vert dive, pull target into crosshairs.
7. Now here is where everyone will disagree. Make corrections to vector, your probably at 3000 meters or so, you still have plenty of time. Use right rudder to cancel out yaw effect, or in other words stay coordinated. Use the ball as a reference, (remember "Step on the ball"), if your ball is centered your ok. Having rudder pedals or a good twister stick really helps.

Also, when practicing, use the Control F1 view, not sure what its called, but it provides a nice vector path indicator such as those in modern HUD systems. Use this to get an idea of your flight path. If I am dropping bombs in this view and I am lined up right, my sight picture is as follows: Vector path centered in crosshair, crosshair on the bow of the ship. This usually puts the bombs in the stack or engine room.

8. Back to cockpit view, I put the crosshairs on the bow, keep the ball centered, watch Altitude at about 1500 m you can drop bombs, the closer the better, but at 500 meters you probably wont pull out. Keep in mind that the top scoring German Dive bomber, Rudel I think it was, always dropped as low as possible. No reward without risk.

This is one possibility among many buy it works great for ships. I use this in the Val and SBD and Ju-87 also. I now prefer the Pe-2 as bomber of choice.

If anyone is interested I have many tracks demonstrating this attack.
