I just completed my first Luftwaffe campaign on the original IL-2 Sturmovik, my comp is too weak to handle FB otherwise I would have gotten it already a long time ago.

The top medal I got was Knight's Cross with Oak's Leaves and Crossed Swords

Final kill number was 156

Rank was Oberst

First Extreme Measure I did happened when I tangled with 4 LA-7 (I think), I took heavy punishment but I managed to take 2 down when the fight started but as for the remainder, my wingmen took down a third one and I finished the last one by ramming him while firing my MK-108 Nose Cannon, I survived the collision and managed to bail out.

Final Mission now was really something, leading a Staffel of 8 BF-109 and facing me and my boys was 8 YAK-3 and 8 PE-2 I managed to shoot down all the PE-2 on my own and I took down 3 YAK-3, my wingmen took out the rest, I only lost 2 to 3 wingmen in that scrap and I made it home but I gotta admit I was really afraid with having sometimes 3 YAK-3 on my 6 at the same time.

After finishing Il2 I swiched quicly to Fb, and I would advise you to do the same.
Good hunting!

Thanks, actually I started on the easy settings, and the worst time I've had were the night missions.

Thing is I don't spend most of my time flying and since there are about 84 to 85 missions in the Luftwaffe campaign I usually play it 3 missions a day at most but I never let a mission unfinished.

Btw I really am grateful to Oleg, when he designed this game, he designed the game I dreamed of since I was a kid..

Well if my comp could handle it I would have it already but I had to modify my current comp in order to handle the original properly.

Still after seeing what happened to the Wing Commander series when I was finally ready to give them a shot, I get the feeling I should buy FB just in case it disappears from the stores when I'll be ready for this one, at least I'll have it secured.

My current comp will never be able to play FB but maybe my next comp...I'm considering buying myself a new comp but that might take some time.

Hey Blackjack

Can you please post all your stats, like the number of aircraft lost and number of friedly kills.

I am also playing that campaign with 58 missions flown, 22 Kills and 41 aircraft lost.

Cheers

What? The one person on this board that doesn't gripe about everything in FB, and you guys jump down his throat right away? How about a congrats? I've NEVER been able to finish a campaign. I'm lucky if I survive the first two or three missions! Good going on that!

Excellent stats BlackJack,

How did you counter the LA5FN - I am stuck on that mission - just keep getting shot up!

Cheer

Thanks, I had a MK-108 Nose Cannon as my main weapon, I played chicken with one of them and it worked even though it's a dangerous gamble, the second I shot down was while it was climbing, I already was on his six when I took him down but how I finished the mission was quite an extreme ending, one of my wingmen had already trashed #3 so last LA5FN actually appeared outta nowhere at point blank range to my MK-108 Nose Cannon, I fired but I was also badly damaged so I ended up with a collision but I was able to bail out safely while the ennemy wasn't that lucky.

That's how it happened, I'd say I was pretty lucky to survive that collision.

I didn't felt the LA5FN were that special, but they have a weakness, the BF-109 can actually outclimb them, that was the only field in which I know the BF-109 had the edge over the LA5FN, the booster can be a good help when climbing as well.

Is that the only time I will encounter the LA5FN?

Thanks

Well that was the only time I ran into a quartet of LA5FN, it happens during the battle of Berlin, I was expecting to see a lot more of those guys, especially at the Kursk Tank Battles.

But the final showdown is really something, you're supposed to lead 2 wings of BF-109 in battle against 8 YAK-3 and you have to intercept 8 PE-2 bombers.

If you thought the LA5FN was bad news, the YAK-3 is even worst, be very careful against those guys, the best I could do was take down the bombers and trash only 3 fighters but most of my squadron survived the fight and I made it home in one piece.

Normally your best bet against the YAK-3 is to try and fight it in high altitude above 3000 feet might be enough to make a difference, use the MK-108 Nose Cannon for that mission that way your wingmen will have more punch and a better chance of survival, you'll need every allies you can get on this fight, and the YAK-3 squadron will be there in full force while there will only be half of your Staffel until the other half arrives, you'll just have to hope your boys are good enough because there are 8 PE-2 bombers to shoot down also.

I was really afraid my wingmen wouldn't last long enough for the other half of my staffel to get there after I shot down the bombers but they survived and we all trashed those YAK-3, it was a very intense fight.
