View Full Version : In Defense Of OT

I see Cowace and his pals have started a forum especially for OT threads.

Great. So now the people with anything interesting or entertaining to say will go off to this new place. And good for them I guess, but it's going to make things even more boring in here than they already were.

I mean it's true the mods have been locking everything remotely amusing but at least we got to have fun making them do it. That's about all we've got left, after all, creating disruptions in here to get back at Ubi for acting like such jerks and to harass the mods for being such uptight, humorless spoilsports.

The OT stuff has for some time been the only material worth reading in here. What else is there? The same old whines about how the Shimmelfarb 69 is modeled wrong? Or the same endless fights about how the Bhutt-Craque Mark XXX won the war/was no good/was a copy of a Goombavian design, ending in the same predictable rants from the same predictable Nazi-fetishists on one side and the same predictable wasters-of-time-trying-to-talk-to-bigoted-idiots on the other?

Or how about those endlessly fascinating (and oh so original) threads beginning, "When will the patch be out?" or "What will the patch include?" or "Will the patch come with any new planes?" Certainly we wouldn't want any OT discussions to crowd them out, they contribute so much of value, don't they?

And not to forget the endless demands for the Buttafucchio Pepperoni, or the Humbly-Pudge Antinous, or the Nachigai Ana, or whatever, and the subsequent endless fights (see above) that usually follow. But hey, it's all ON TOPIC and that's what matters, innit?

If the mods ever succeed in completely eliminating OT material, this is going to be the dullest place on the internet. Because there really isn't anything of interest to be said ON-topic right now. It's all been said, about a million times.

When/if this semi-legendary patch comes out, then we will indeed have a hell of a lot to talk about; and the mods won't have to lock OT threads, because nobody's going to have the time to start them.

Until then, we're all just fooling around killing time. Nothing we can say about the sim really means anything, because we don't know what it's going to be like after the patch.

So it would be nice if the mods would lighten up a bit; but obviously they're not going to. And so I don't blame Cowace and the others for going elsewhere.

But it's sure going to be even more boring in here.

End of sermon.

And now let the congregation rise and say together:

"IBTL!"

Maybe I'm missing something, but -

Wouldn't the simplest solution be to move the O/T stuff over to Cowace's, Cardinal's and Focker's forum? Then the Ubi forums can work as places to get pertinent info about the games.

I don't see any loss here - you go one place to find out about the patch, another to watch Crash spam a server to its knees...

When they closed the PL I said something like this.

There are many Old Timers here that have long ago figured out the answers to alot of the questions that are asked here about IL2, FB isn't that much different, We also have the answers to things like "How do I post a screen shots?" and other silly forum related stuff, we've already been through all the discussions about FM and DM, and most any other discussion related to this stuff, We're the source for answers.
Also we've seen the "Where do you live?" and "What do you do for a living?" topics 30 times and for the most part the GD bores the hell out of us. The PL was our place to discuss other stuff and have fun, it kept us around to answers the questions that the new guys ask, without it we'll all start to get bored and go away, along with the answers.

With The PL gone we've tried to make the GD fun enough to keep us around, but that's been stopped, so we'll go elsewhere. Maybe this new PL will work and maybe not, but this place will thin out, and you guys can fight about all the stupid, boring crap we've already been over, and start "This Sim is biased against LW planes" thread number 32 without us, except when patches come out, this forum always picks up then.

well if ubi notices how dead it is in here and tis saturday, most forum members moved to www.sim-outhouse.com (http://www.sim-outhouse.com) or www.simhq.com (http://www.simhq.com) and cowace's OT forums have been extremely busy

Go where to find out about the patch? Is there somewhere we can go to find out about the patch? Many people would like to know.

The "patch" threads at Ubi are just guesses and rumors. Plus that guy claiming he had the leaked beta, and that sure got locked fast. Once in a blue moon Oleg posts something mysterious, usually saying he "hopes" to have the patch out by some date and who takes that seriously anymore?

That's just what people are talking about. There isn't any real information about the patch, and everything else depends on that, so we might as well talk OT and people shouldn't have to go somewhere else to do it.

I was explaining to Hellcat and others how Fennec does his background smilies trick and Cowace2 got very nervous about the HTML code included in the post and deleted it.

No more than that.

I see that McCallaway did the same trick as Fennec in this thread:

http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_gd&id=zdpms

However, Tully forgot to edit out the HTML before he locked the thread so it's there in perpetuity, or at least until the thread is either deleted, or discretely unlocked and edited, when they think we're not watching./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Actually, I deleted it - I did not realize there wasn't an automatic tag to tell you it had been edited.

And to repeat: the reason for it is that Ubi may construe those posts as encouraging the hacking of their site. I believe that Cartrix has made the offer to create a link directly from Ubi to an O/T lounge, and I'd hate to lose that.

After it was refeuled i climbed in.With many manipulations the mechcanics started the turbines.I followed their actions with the greatest of interest. The first one started quite easily.the second caught fire.In no time the whole engine was on fire.Luckily as a fighter pilot i was used to getting quickly out of the cockpit. The fire was quickly put out.The second plane caused no trouble - Adolf Galland (first time in a ME262)

I already looked at the code on that page, it doesn't seem like a very complicated trick. Actually I guess it might be browser dependent.

But if it's not to be used I won't.

Sorry, what was the topic? How do you tell whether OT means off topic or on topic?

Edit: Tully, I just wanted to satisfy my curiosity, I'll edit this myself.

EditEdit: Okay, it was different than what I thought.

I am sure the GD here will pick up after the patch. We will see a whole new generation of "Oleg" hates LW planes and threads about the Yak-3 not having enough ammo, etc...

In three days of the new PL, I have only had edit one thread (deleted an inappropriate image) and there have been zero bannings. People want a place to Spam while they are at work, read a joke or two and occasionally argue about Iraq. We are not competing with UBI's forum; we have nothing to gain by hosting, except bring back the PL.

It seems to me that we are doing UBI a favor while accommodating a crowd brought together by a piece of software.

It is really simple; post IL-2 stuff here and OT stuff in the "Pilots Lounge Reloaded". If I can get in touch with Cartrix I will see if mutual linking would be beneficial to both the PL and UBI's GD so none of the die hard GD guys feel threatened.

I think that the new O/T area will work, basing this comment on the observation that the GD area in the new forum is pretty quiet.

Most newcomers who buy the sim will end up here and ask a question somebody here can answer.

The new P/L, whilst having no obvious 'point' in a simming context, does, IMHO make it more communual when you're online and looking at Mrs_Tiggywinkle in their P40 and you 'know' them.

This may not be everyone's cup of tea but the community thing does work for some people and that's fine by me. It also gets by UBI's lack of sense of humour.

Well, yes - but, it's a benefit to the new forum, too. You can imagine how hard it would be to get the word out if Ubi didn't let Cowace put up a notice here, and (presumably, eventually) a permanent, "sticky" link.
