This is my favorite so far, however.

Interesting:

"The DB 605A engine gave better performance, according to the test group, than the Merlin, which was rated 150 hp below the German engine. It gave the Spitfire a ceiling of 41,666 ft. (12700 m.), about 3,280 ft. (1000 m.) more than a Bf.109G with the same engine and 5,166 ft. (1475 m.) more than that of a Spitfire Mk.V."

Every DB/Merlin swap I have read about (hurricane/spitfire/109) resulted in the DB option being preferred by pilots.

Realize that the DB605A was replacing a Merlin 40-series engine here, hardly a fair comparison. The DB605A's contemporary was the Merlin 60-series. The same DB installation on a Spit IX would have yielded a far different result.

Do you suppose the displacement disparity between the two engines is a factor also? (Regardless of the series of the engine)

The Merlin only displaces 26.9 L--one of the smallest fighter engines of the war. The DB605 enjoys an 8.8 L advantage at 35.7 L. That difference is more than the displacement of Chuck_Older's big Buick!

Who's getting more out of their engine if the power difference was only 150hp?

I wonder what TBO is for each engine? Octane of fuel? Boost allowed?

The DB605 got more out of lower grade fuel, lower boost settings it also achived its rated power at lower revs and had greater torque and all of this with a single stage supercharger instead of a two stage as in the Merlin.

Another great advantage in my opinion was the facility to have a cannon firing throught the hub of the engine.

I have also seen this report but the findings of the one I read stated that the Spit performed better with the Merlin?

I cant remember the title of the book but it was a library book, an old edition hard back book about WW2 fighters that was printed in the 70's or early 80's

There is also a picture of what looks like a whole squad of german spitfires. Did Goering got his spitfire squadron after all? It looked kinda weird.
