View Full Version : Turning the Tide - RNZAF P-40 Campaign for Pacific Fighters

VW-IceFire
05-20-2005, 05:11 PM
In record time, I have put together my latest single player campaign for Pacific Fighters.

"Turning the Tide" is a eight mission campaign featuring Number 14 squadron Royal New Zealand Air Force flying the P-40M against the Japanese over Guadalcanal. The campaign includes a generic and marked version of the Wairarapa Wild Cat flown by Flying Officer Geoffrey Fisken and is loosely based on the experiences of F/O Fisken during the summer of 1943.

The campaign is currently available here (http://www.flying-legends.net/php/downloads/listings.php?page_number=2&cat_id=28).

Thank-you very much...I will download it as soon as I've finished typing this!
I have been waiting for a Kiwi Pacific campaign as the subject is close to my heart; My Grandad was in Guadalcanal and New Georgia as groundcrew.
He was a Leading Aircraftsman with 4 S.U (which was the servicing unit who "owned" the 'Gloria Lyons' p40's and later the GL Corsair).
He was there a little after Fisken and his famous "Wildcat" P40. By that time it had been damaged in an accident and once repaired, ol no.19 didn't sport the the same cowling, therfore no wildcat or markings! I guess you already know this though...so I'll stop ranting! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif
Thanks again!!
BTW...anyone interested in the RNZAF in the Pacific should try to get a copy of 'Air to Air' by Chris Rudge...a great book with a foreword by F/O Fisken.

By the way....I know I'm being real picky, but the Wildcat on the cowlings shouldn't have the white outline around it.
This was actually chalk, put around the cat for a photo takien sometime after july 4th 1943. They only had the chalk on there so the cat would stand out in the photo!

The site this was on is where the info about the chalk was. I also read somewhere that the red edges on the white ID lines was actually staining caused by the masking material being dipped in fuel, and not red paint. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/354.gif

Prop_Strike, I actually had no idea about what happened to his plane. I know it was damaged in an accident but your information fills the details in quite a bit more! Amazing how paths and history cross.

I picked up the story from a Flight Journal Magazine and I was intrigued. I couldn't do the whole story as our Guadalcanal map is very limited but I did what I could. I thought, nobody has done a RNZAF campaign yet...I need to do that. Its only 8 missions right now...who knows, it could expand in the future...we'll see how it goes.

Big thanks to SeaNorris for taking all those shots!

As for the chalk outline...yes I had read that...but I left the skinning to others (as I'm no good at it) and he did a very excellent job. Might have overlooked that small part...but its a fantastic rendition of Fiskens aircraft. I'm very impressed with it! In any case, point noted!

Its funny you mention this mate.

I have been doing a little research into the fall of Singapore, and intend to do a small campaign of around 10 or 15 missions from an RNZAF/RAAF perspective.
488 (NZ) Squadron to be exact, flying Buffalo's and Hurricanes.
I€m just waiting on the patch, and hoping it will include Singapore so I can pull my finger out and make a start.

When 488 Sqn was finally withdrawn then disbanded, most of the pilots went on to form 14 Squadron RNZAF, so it may make a good "prequal" for your €œTurning the Tide€ campaign. lol http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Sounds awesome! I was actually thinking about dealing with that one...but I sort of wanted to wait and see what we got. I hear there was possibilities of an AI Sally bomber and AI Nate fighter which would flesh that sort of campaign out very nicely.

Singapour is apparently confirmed so we should have it. Would be a great combination!

Hi IceFire...
Please know that I am greatful for the campaign and my knitpicking about little details is just a bad habit of mine!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

I agree that the skin is very nice indeed and will be great for the campaign.
I'm hoping that there will be more RNZAF/RAAF goodies in the future from you or others, and I'd like to thank you and everyone else who works hard to make sure our favourite sim just keeps getting better and better...~Salute~

Hi, Wallstein, here's the dictionary definition: KIWI:
noun: nocturnal flightless bird of New Zealand having a long neck and stout legs; only surviving representative of the order Apterygiformes
noun: fuzzy brown egg-shaped fruit with slightly tart green flesh
noun: a native or inhabitant of New Zealand
noun: climbing vine native to China; cultivated in New Zealand for its fuzzy edible fruit with green meat

I was born and educated in New Zealand but must confess I rarely call myself a Kiwi. Using the term just seemed appropriate for this thread.
I was in high school during World War 2 and still have the sense of pride in the RNZAF. It steered me into my own life in aviation. Thanks for asking and sorry about rambling on. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Oh yeah, by the way I've only got one problem with this campaign. The AI! Here I was getting chased by a Rufe, when my wingman is flying parallel with him, barely 50 metres away!

Ended up getting a dead engine a lotta kilometres away from base, but was able to glide her in to within sight of the runway http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Was a lotta fun. Now I've officially done a solo in a glider http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm an expat Kiwi so am looking forward to playing this. I have just downloaded it but can't play at all for the next 6 days(the humanity!) as I'll be in Hong Kong.
Nice to know someone appreciates the smaller nations contributions, too. It is really in the spirit of "Forgotten Battles."

yeah... the AI are so STUPID... and are like that all the time.... if you have a wingman order him to attack enemy fighters/bombers/all etc. and he will then break formation with you and act on his own..
but the AI cannot do that and it is so frustrating to watch them..

I'm looking forward to this too... I've been at Guadalcanal for the last month with the VMF-223 co-ops (which I'm making into a campaign).. and the Guadalcanal campaign by Sulans

hope the P40's are as nice to fly as the ones in the Flying Tigers campaign

Greetings all.

Back on Page 1 there was a "don't know what happened to Wairarapa Wildcat" comment. For any who care (you know who you are http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif).

NZ3072 Wairararapa Wildcat was US Serial #43-5505, an M-5 model P-40. It had an accident while being flown up to the Islands from NZ in April 43 (ran into another P-40 that decided to park on the runway at Tontouta, New Caledonia). It got repaired, went to Guadalcanal 26/4/43 and became "19" with 15 Squadron at Kukum. When the RNZAF split ground crew from squadrons it became 1 Field Maintenance Unit's a/c, then later 2 FMU's (then renamed 2 Servicing Unit), having an accident at the end of August 43 while taxiing (hit a tanker - which might be the reason for the loss of the cowling drawing). It's last combat sortie was 17/12/43 then it was withdrawn from the front an went at the end of December to Guadalcanal (to 1 SU), where it was a working-up a/c until March 1944, when it was flown back to NZ. There it was with 4 OTU at first Ardmore then Ohakea, before joining the bulk of the RNZAF on the Rukuhia scrapheap in 1945, being sold for scrap (along with an awful lot of other a/c) on 2/3/1948 to H.J. Larsen. Sometime after that it was broken up for scrap metal. (Only five RNZAF P-40's survived this, including NZ3220, last (and only survivor) of the Gloria Lyons series (P-40's NZ3148, NZ3167, NZ3220 & Corsair NZ5233)).

Also, F/O GB Fisken didn't get all his SW Pacific kills in NZ3072. He got three in that and three in NZ3060. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hopefully I'll get some time to try out your campaign Icefire. Nice one. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

is it just me... the fire power of the P40's seems less than those in the Flying Tigers campaign.... and I miss not being anle to slip the hood back http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

you forgot to loadout the B-17's where they bomb the ships...

the first big dogfight was great...

you seem to have got the numbers/skills right.... i had to do a lot of adjusting in the VMF223 co-op pack to make it playable for single/campaign... the trouble is that if you set the skills as realistic as they were... the Zekes blow everything away... when they are all AI... as they will fight quite unlike real pilots...
no fear.. no giving up...no 'well that was rough, but I got a few and am still alive, lets head for home'

I have found that for off-line play missions work out most realistically by having ALL pilots set to Rookie

Hey Icefire,
Just finished the campaign and really liked it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. Thanks for the work you put into it. Like fabianfred I also appreciated the skill level of the AI as I actually managed to get a few kills http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif. it gave me kind of a thrill to watch a couple of flights of RNZAF boys winging over the ocean, especially in the Avenger escort mission with that beautiful sky.

I even copied the files over to single missions so I could replay some of my favourites, particularly the Zero and Val attack on the airstrip.

Thanks again. When BoB comes out (yes, I am optimistic) can you make us a bomber campaign for the Wellington http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif? My great uncle piloted one in the RAF and was shot down over Belgium. I'd like to recreate the mission (if I can get a copy of his diary).

Ta.
