View Full Version : Thinking of getting...

Years ago i used to fly a few flight sims like Combat Flight Simulator, Comanche 3 and flight unlimited 2.

A couple of months back i felt like getting into flight sims again, and got myself Falcon 4.0 Allied Forces and i have been playing it for a while. Its a great game, but can wear you down after long periods due to its complexity so im looking to play something a it easier to take in along side it.

So for a while i knew IL-2 "was" the WW2 sim so i have been looking into it. I managed to download the demo to the original IL-2 (bloody hell, thats the buggiest demo i have ever played, were talking splash sounds getting mixed up with engine sounds and pilots repeating the same word over and over again nonstop for the whole mission "NIEN" "NIEN" "NIEN" non stop http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif ). But a great game, if a very rough diamond at the time.

It was a bit of a shock though, the lack of any kind of flight modal in Falcon (but you get loads of switches to play with instead "whats this do?" FOX-3 "O ****" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) means IL-2 was a little new to me, spinning in circles all the way to the ground is only fun a few dozen times. Buts IL-2 still hell of a lot simpler systems wise, and im looking for a real dogfight...

What a great game anyway, graphics are great, for a game of its age, i mean just flying into clouds at height alt and looking out can be stunning, almost photo realistic at moments.

So im thinking of getting (as in already ordered) IL-2 pack, which includes IL-2 forgotten battles, ace expansion, and pacific fighters.

My question is how well my computer will run the game:

Athlon 2500+
1 gig
Quadroo FX 2000 128 card?

Pretty old know, i know. The IL-2 demo i could play maxed.

Thanks for the help (sorry, most of my post is rubbish, typing what im thinking).

DONT GET THE PACK.... get "1946" if you still can instead......... this has all of the versions above PLUS the later free and bought add ons all on one DVD......... this is the one that everyone uses online.

I run mine on a pent 4 2 gig with 1 gig of ram and a gforce 590xt or something similar ok http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This is what you want, shop around or ebay it, you should get it a lot cheaper than that

I running '46 on a XP2400+, 7600GS and 1Gb of ram (1024*786 res).

A bit stuttery in places (especially when the AAA opens up) but playable.

Thanks for the help i should be ok then http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Taylortony, The pack is 10 (awesome http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif) at play.com. Im not sure if this is right but i read that the campaigns from the original forgotten battles are missing with 46, so its best to get that anyway the pack or you miss some content, i can get 46 a bit later (think there will be enough aircraft to keep me happy anyway http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif).

Also how goods the dynamic campaign, i like them lots, can i fly all aircraft including bombers? Will the roles be lots different for different aircraft are they all about the same but with a few changes? I mean if i go a bomber in the dynamic campaign( if possible), will i have full bombing missions with bomber formations, or just a few bombers and a pretty standard objective that any other aircraft would get, but go about it a different day?

How good are the dynamic missions and battlefields?

Does the Pacific theater have a dynamic campaign?

Is there any good dynamic campaigns (professional but free) for the west? Like BOB or North Africa for download?

Cheers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

About the original campaigns: you got that backwards. The original IL-2 Sturmovik campaigns were ommitted from Forgotten Battles on until the recent 1946 DVD.

The version you just sent for will have dynamic campaigns for the Eastern Front and for the Pacific.

The dynamic campaigns are decent enough and playable enough to keep you amused, but you won't be able to rewrite historical outcomes. Basically 'dynamic' means that aircraft numbers and types are randomly generated into the mission based on numerical availability and statistical formualas. If you shoot down an Ace and kill him, he's not supposed to reappear. If all of your experienced comrades get killed, you'll be stuck with lesser skilled wingmen. If you destroy a bridge, it is supposed to stay destroyed for a few missions.

The most interesting thing about the dynamic campaigns, in my opinion, is that the generator will track your career in detail and you can see what kinds of planes you destroyed on a specific date. It also maintains a squadron roster and debriefs you after each mission to show you your flight path on a mini-map and where each target or plane in the battle was destroyed.

All of the Western Front/English channel dynamic campaigns that I can think of are based on the "Battle Over Europe" addon. The only exception to this I know of is Jumo's Western Front addon which 'fakes' maps to substitute Eastern Front maps for Western Front locations.

With the version you are getting, you'll have Ian Boys' Northwest Europe map, a small bonus map that was included in one of the PF upgrade patches. Ian wrote a little dynamic campaign for it and you can find that at Netwings.

To the best of my knowledge, all of the MTO/North Africa DGen campaigns are based on the '1946' pack.

You can also try Lowengrin's Dynamic Campaign Generator which is a free alternative to the DGen dynamic campaign generator included with Forgotten Battles. I don't know what version you'd use for your copy of FB or what campaigns will be available to you though.

There's a reason the pack is so cheap, it's frikking obsolete and can't be upgraded to the
level 4 flight model.

You need 1946 and want the DVD set or barring that, the 1946 download.

4.07 (and since) was the best change to FM and controls, period.

And I dunno about your demo but mine at the end of 2001 ran great on W98... perhaps you can
try the compatibility wizard setting for the demo while you rue spending 10 pounds you should
not have? Sorry but when you get up to date at least you will have the best and a tough curve
to learn beyond other sims.

Make sure you have a stick with throttle and either twist-rudder or pedals.
Pedals are highly recommended. The best cheap stick so far is Saitek AV8R.
People will tell you about Track IR, if you have a webcam then you can run a free version.

If your 1946 install is not 4.08 then you want 4.08 or 4.09beta patch.
There are a few good free 3rd party mission/campaign generators.
There is loads of free get you started and even training online.
Hyperlobby is the place to go online when you're ready.

Note: Up and untill the bolded line at the bottom, this is an irrelevant post!
It's just I feel I need to correct a quote by M_Gunz, though the error in that is not relevant to the issue:

and can't be upgraded to thelevel 4 flight model.
It surely can be upgraded to the level 4 flight model!

Up tot 4.04m, no problem:
Patch order - entire game series. Make sure you have it right! (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/4721047273/p/1)

Indeed, not really upgradable to 1946, so no 4.08m / 4.09b1m, so no online play...
(Unless you get the downloadable addon 1946, which costs more than a 1946 DVD... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif)

So, yes, go get 1946 DVD!

Have Fun!

Get 1946,, it contains everything except the small 4.08m patch included.

When you have mastered single player and decide to play online, you will be glad you got 1946, its what everyone uses online now.

Online play is absolutle fantastic if you play on the correct servers.

Hi!

You can get single missions from both the original and the second demo's, enhanced by UberDemon to 1946 level, as well as original content from IL-2 Sturmovic at his site Here (http://www.uberdemon.com/index2.html)

Only single missions but some challenging stuff (for off-line).

Cheers!

Download my training campaign, "Straight From the Farm". There is no official training for this sim, so my campaign is sorta the unofficial one. It is mentioned in the Nugget's Guide. It shows you how to takeoff and land on grass and then on a carrier. It also shows you some important functions that you need to map.

It works with Pacific Fighters or 1946. Follow the link below to find the campaign.

Still, anything less than 4.07-4.08 is missing out on some of the best changes done.
