Good lord, I'm becoming a bomber boy!

I find myself flying the fast A-20G and the sturdy Beaufighter more and more often, replacing the beautiful P-40 Kittyhawk and sleek Spitfire MkVb.

Doctor, whats wrong with me? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

It will pass soon after you meet MrMortar108, MrLazzzer103 and Mr4.0-151/20FearMe in online combat.

Flying bombers and attack planes is very interesting, you will learn to muster different attack techniques (bomb, rockets, torpedoes, high altitude level bombing using the bombsight, etc...). The online experience in dogfight server may be very "challenging", especially in late war scenarios.

You will find that you have a good chance of surviving only by trying to sneak unseen among enemy fighters.

You should plan carefully your attack routes to avoid enemy bases, and generally you must come from unforeseen directions (not just flying straight from your base to the target).

You might ask for escort or seek for a wingman, some people will be willing to escort or to fly alongside you, though this does not happen often on some servers.

Low altitude flying (below 100 m) is generally to be preferred. But for level bombers also flying high (3500 - 4000 m and above) may be good, because in this sim fighter pilots are usually too busy in their furball at 500 m height to notice a small dot 4000 m above them http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Much better is flying coop missions, where you usually have some other pilot to fly tight formation (which helps self-defence) and maybe also friendly fighters as escort.

Welcome to the groundpounder club, its real fun when you get into it. Oh...and be ready for remarks like "pfft uber AI gunners", some ppls ego's cant take beeing shot down by a slower, bigger multiengined plane. Even if you're the one handling the guns http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Welcome aboard M8! I do it mostly because I'm so tired of haveing my AIce handed to me in a fighter. That I learned to Bomb, I hit target then get shot down, at least this way I kill something LOL

Welcome to the club! I'm a much better bomber pilot, myself. I like the He-111 and B-25 much more than the A-20, but they all get the job done. The next thing to do is attack 4 Ace AI Bf-109G-10's. I've done it before, but these were live players online. I killed 3 of them before the last one got me. Was thrilling. 2 I got with the nose guns on the A-20.

S!

I'd encourage you to fly on Zeke's & Wildcats or Spits vs. 109's servers ... most of the time there is a group on red or blue who are coordinating bombing runs .. even if it is a DF server, the mission objectives encourage teamwork and coordination, inlcuding bombers.

I've been trying the bombers out lately too, and I felt as you do at first. Oh, I still fly fighters, but now I watch in anticipation for a map where a Heinkel or A-20 would be useful.

If I'm not familiar with the map and mission I will generally take a fighter first and try to make it to the target area to do a little first hand recon. Then I'll RTB for a bomber.

Level bombing with the He 111 is a lot of fun as well. It's satisfying when you spend twenty or more minutes climbing for altitude, setting up your bombsight, locating the target, dropping bombs, and getting the message you have destroyed a half dozen or so enemy ground targets. (Of course, shortly after it's..Aileron controls gone, rear gunner gone, left engine falls from plane...etc, etc)

It's just a shame that most of the time I'm on, there either aren't enough people to have bomber and fighter wings or else no one else wants to take a big slow bomber. There are several dedicated bomber jockeys on Warbirds of Prey. If you can fly with Chicago Chad and some of those guys, you can learn a few things about bomber tactics.

Find a group of mudmovers to fly with and you'll never look back http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There's something about a tightly-held formation of A20s or He111s that gives most champagne swilling fighter jocks pause. Perhaps it's all those bristly rear gunners, covering 4 times the area than they would were the pilots flying alone.

Mind you, there's really something to be said about the SBD for a hardy little bird that really holds it's own. Last night our squadron was running a map that was restricted to SBDs (simulating the Wirraway in New Guinea) up against Ki-43Ibs. The SBD/Wirraways had ground targets, but no escorts. We put together a tight formation, flew in over the mountains, then got engaged. And discovered the weirdest thing: the SBD will hold its own in a turnfight against an Oscar! Perhaps because it's so slow, and can be pushed extremely hard without stalling out, and the rear gunner peppering the air in front of them can't hurt either http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I'm usually tough pressed to pick up online kills of any sort, but last night I popped into the rear gunners position and flamed two Oscars in quick succession - who were being cocky and sitting in slow on my six.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Well glad to know it's not just me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Not good at high level bombing though, I like low level bombing with the A-20s and B25's thousand pounders, and the Beaufighters 8 x 60lb rockets.

Oh, I remember a great match I had once with my mate Chunders. We both flew B-25's, formed up and headed for the thick of the combat. And, when we got there, preceded to turnfight http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It was brilliant, Mitchells are good little turners if you get the speed down and the C-flaps lowered. Got a Spitfire, a Zero and also maybe an 84, was a while ago. Still a lotta fun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Also, Sunday night on the _RAAF_ Server. Salute guys, that was without a doubt one of the best times I've ever had. It was Allied planes off carriers supporting the invasion of Iwo Jima. A ground pounders heaven http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Literally hundreds of artillery, troops and tanks just screaming to get bombed. And, the gentleman I am, obliged http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Flyin my trusty A20 yet again, I made those Japanese pay http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
A friendly Corsair flew over the mountain, and I noticed several artillery crews on the top http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Bomber a coupla of those too! Great fun

And, here's the secret guys:
When flying A20's, if it's a short flight chuck your fuel down to 25%, I swear on my dear mother you can turn with the Zeros! Shoulda seen the expressions after I sheared some poor Zero blokes wing off http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

However, the P-40 will always stay in my heart of hearts. Wish I was a better P-40 pilot though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Maybe it's because of the planelist... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Level-bombing blue base in a B-25 online is better than sex. Watch them spawn & start up the engines not knowing what is inbound... - I just rarely get away with it though but it's worth it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

He-111 makes for an excellent divebomber with those 2xSC2000's.

Get into a low level dive in a He-111 and you won't get out of it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
