View Full Version : What we hope to see in Silent Hunter IV...

So far with the trailer, the photos, and the hype, it's quite clear that this installment of SH might be geared more towards a conflict with Japanese warships rather than preying upon merchant fleets. You will not hear me complaining about this, if it's true. Just as long as I have an escort of American Battleships , cruisers, or aircraft every now and then. Seriously. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

In SH3, almost all of the conflicts were with escort destroyers. This appears to have changed for the better, even though I'm betting on heavy air attacks from Zeros, Val's, and Kates. I'm just hoping that the aircraft carriers, and their escort aircraft are more realistic in how they go about their business. This game should knock the socks off any if they do it right with the carriers and their aircraft. With that said, let's all hope too that we have the pleasure in seeing first hand through our periscopes aircraft taking off from the decks to attack us or allied ships and bases. Even though I don't believe they'll have crew on the ships, it would be nice addidition if this installment has them included on deck as well. If animated on land, why not at sea? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Something I'm really hoping for, but doubt that it'll be included, are the prototype vessels, aircraft, and weapons. The most intriguing of all, IMO, is the underwater aircraft carrier that the Japanese built, the I-400 class. If not included, then imgagine an expansion pack that includes these suckers, along with other Japanese subs. Aircraft out of nowhere, and not a vessel in site. Hmmm.... I'm not sure what would be more exciting. Hunting one of these subs, or commanding it?

Well I think I've rambled on long enough. Graphically I think the game will be solid, and thus I'm saving up for the computer that will run it. The way I see it, this game should be worth it.

You're right not to be optimistic: ....If they aren't even correctly representing the historically involved vessels, don't expect anything exotic!

The I-400 class would be cool. I thought I read somewhere here that if your pc could support SH3 that it would support SH4. Correct me if I am wrong because I wasn't planning on buying another computer. I just bought one after 7 years without one and the pc hard drive crashed after 3 months. Don't want to put more money into something just to have it die.

I have three computers at present. The compaq presario laptop (2005) I'm using right now is unfortunately the only "operational" computer I own. I also own a Maximux PC crashed harddrive (1998) which collects dust, and a Toshiba laptop (2002). The Toshiba laptop eventually came down with so many bugs and viruses, that they eventually started killing each other off. The CD doesn't work, you can't turn it off (it chooses when to turn itself off), and every now and then you'll get a real suprise.

As for a new PC come April or May, I'm looking into the possibilities of a Dell or Alienware PC.

Ooh, don't say that 4-letter word here. No, not the F word, the Dell word. I've never heard good things about Dells as good gaming PC's. Maybe they are starting to market good gaming systems to gamers, but then that is what Alienware specializes in.

Instead of talking bout my hard drive.

What i hope to see in silent hunter 4 is a crew.
That is a submarine with 2 human players.
1. controls commmand functions, damage control
2. controls, torpedo fire, loading, engine room

Control cannot fire unless torpedo officer gives the order, engines are given the order to go flank but will only do so when the engineer sets teh sub to flank.
This sets up levels of Chain of Command and teamwork in the sub.
Both have important parts to play and are interlinked for success

This cat wants a few operational details in the sub. As, I believe, do we all.

A big fat annunciator panel with lights for valves and so on. 'Green board'.

Switches you can go up to and SWITCH. Gauges that read actual readings. Not a big ask really.

If there is an electric compressor and a diesel one, I want to see them.

Make it real. Give me stuff to do, to get to know the machine during the month long patrol.

A clunk as the induction valve closes. Or doesn't close. Whine of the turbo blower.

Exhaust smoke.

More compartments obviously. I, too, want to walk. Or just stand still in them.

Honestly, this keeps me up at nights.

O, and I want to be based in Perth, or Bris-Vegas. Oversexed, overpaid, and over here.

This function is available with SH3 Commander. You must download it, SH3 should not be without SH3 Cmdr. JonesSoft (http://www.users.on.net/%7Ejscones/software/products.html)

Maybe this is more for Silent Hunter V http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif, but I have my comprehensive list here (not in any necessary order):

1. Allow the Commander (you) to set who has the command of the Bridge and who has command of the Conn.

2. Do not force a Commanding Officer to create, manage and supervise a junior enlisted watchbill. It should be selectable with a "port" and "starboard" watch section with a simple click of a mouse. If anything, the ONLY watchbill management by the Commanding Officer should be with your fellow officers.

3. Change the weather system! You can not apply random weather scenarios throughout the entire map. Countless times have I became boiling mad at SH3 for forcing me to withstand 16+ days or more of the same weather system, no matter where I was on the map. Instead, separate the campaign map into "cells" where realistic seasonal weather could be applied depending on the region.

4. Make at least 80% of the boat accessible, not just the conning tower, command room, bridge and radio room. At least include both the engine rooms and the forward and aft torpedo rooms as well.

5. Work on a better A.I. system. Bethesda Softworks created an almost perfect system with their vaunted "Radiant A.I." when they released The Elders Scrolls IV: Oblivion. If you can visually "see" your crew going on watch, heading to the galley for chow, or off to their bunk... then you can actually claim that you could place the player in total immersion.

6. Allow for a longer development cycle. Most folks would agree with me here. We would rather wait for a more complete game, rather than a rushed title with much of the desired features left behind upon a game's release.

7. Stick with the WWII genera. I can not see myself launching a MK48 ADCAP or Spearfish at 800 ft, with guidance wires attached to the torpedo. Then head to missile launching depth to volley off four Tomahawks or Harpoons with my VLS.

8. Include a REAL captain's logbook with the ability to type in various data. It would be nice to share and compare notes with my fellow Kaleuns/Captains here in the Official Silent Hunter Series Forum!

9. Continue making this a "simulation" without dumbing down the game play. Stick to your selectable difficulty levels without turning the series into an arcade style submarine game.

10. Last one! Ditch the renown system. Ships and submarines goes through periodic re-fit for upgrades that are determined through the Navy, not though the decisions of a famous commander.

Yes, I did. Well, I am still waiting for it. It's been 2 months and still no recovery disk. They gave me a loaner pc. I need to get a flash drive. Hopefully I can save the game to that so I don't have to start all over. Kind of want to go through the war at least once before starting a new career.

I hear people who on one hand complain about having to micromanage the crew's watch tours and then on the other hand desire micromanagement of the boat's subsystems. The game is all about giving you an idea of what the sub campaign was about, not making you into a task monkey turning dials and flipping switches. Hey, if you can get all of that into a game, more power to you; I am not against it; I'd prefer to have some control over how much managing that I as the skipper have to do. A more realistic watch tour implementation is in order and my understanding is the game developers have heard the SH3 community loud and clear on that one.

BL, I like your top ten list! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif All sensible stuff you're saying there. I especially agree with point 10. The way renown is accumulated and then spent is handled way too abstractly. When Gunther Prien sneaked into Scapa Flow and earned prestige, it wasn't lost when he got some upgrades for his boat. He was still the same prestigious man he always was.

I am an unashamed renown manipulator, editing game files as I see fit. Whenever I spend renown I then edit the files to add it back. There's no way a real life skipper would be sent to the back of the line for future considerations because he had "cashed in his favours" and now ranked as low as a rookie commander. The abstraction of the renown model is just plain silly in my opinion: Sorry Kaleun, you spent all your brownie points on your last torpedo loadout, no new command for you, get to the back of the line.

When I edit my game files, I don't add renown that I did not earn, I simply make my earned renown accumulate from one patrol to the next. If I spend 1500 I then add 1500 to my file, thus over time my renown builds up and my "prestige" in the U-boat arm builds, just as it would in real life. With each successful patrol, the legend of the veteran commanders grew in accord with their career feats.

When you do that is it in the career patrol_0 cfg file? I have tried to change it and it works when I go back into my saved game. But when I stay in the game and return to port, the renown is just what was accumulated with the prior renown. I think that the renown system the way it is set up is wrong. I agree that the Captain would not lose renown because he upgraded his boat. When playing I would like to be able to upgrade whatever is available.

Dell acquired Alienware in May, 2006. Alienware is operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Dell.

However, you are right to refer to the tendency of most Dell owners to wonder why their bottom end budget system won't play high end 3D games. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Dont judge by the trailer. I remember that the SHIII had alot of pics of the Bismark. And a also the trailers show the more exicting points of a game. So dont jump to conclusions. Belive it or not the SHIV devs are working alot on the Nipon Marus. Many diffrent types will be implmented.

Also many of the things that have been said(ie crew system) It will be in 3 waches.

gimmie gimmie gimmie...

SH4 at this stage and time of the production game is .. over. With release just shy of over a month away .. bet the game is finished and now being "tweaked" for gold and cut.

I want a few things.. though so Ill bite.

1. A "working" game out of the box. I dont want to have to wait for a patch 2 months later to enjoy it straight away.

2. A demo before release

3. Mod support and tools that can fix what is broken IF there is a broken out of the box.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Hey.. worked with Medival 2 TW..

4. More of YOU players spending more time online instead of your little dark electron infested holes playing with yourselves. Come out and play online! :P

last but not least..but the release of this game wont make a difference..

5. Bring our boys home from Iraq.. let it go.

though i hacked the fatigue system by opening the coef something file and set some values to 0 without using sh3 commdr.

and talking bout renown i say that it shouldnt be used like currency to upgrade ur uboat or buy stuff i say use it as some sort of experience points, when u get a particulare number you get promoted earn medals and stuff but not use it to buy things

Update:

I'm now "highly" considering having a friend at work build my next pc. I'm thinking a dual core processor at 266, 2Gigs of system memory, 250Gigs of HD, SoundBlaster's latest card, and best of all, a pair of GForce cards @768MB.

Any thoughts? I'm hoping for >$3000 US Dollars to be spent on the total package, including a decent 20" flat panel, so I could be pushing the limits.

My best advice would be to protect that fancy new system with a good UPS [uninterruptible power supply, aka battery backup.] I've seen so many people spend big bucks on a system and then hook it to a $9.99 piece of c-r-a-p surge strip power bar or even worse, straight into the wall.
