View Full Version : Stopping bombers: a forgotten art?

Regarding my recent online experience, and this is all been lately on decent, objective oriented servers, is I have been unmolested online when I fly bombers. Monday got some cars and nearly sank a boat on the Crimea when I calmly flew a Pe-2 ... climbed to 3000 metres and dropped my load. exept for AAA, no one came near me or even seemed to be protecting the Red objective. Mind you a lot of action around blue...maybe that was why?

I had a different experience last night on Historia, though sadly maybe partly because of the smaller number of players. first map wwas the Moscow one so took up a Lagg wit bombs and took out a German truck...then went in to strafe the static planes on the blue base for the heck of it. Got an FW-190 with a lucky shot...but the real fun was the next map, Italy online.

Still in a Red mood, took a P-38 with bombs and rockets up to hit the forces counterattacking our boys near Bologna. got promptly shot donw before I could even get near the target by a sharp 109 (Tomek997 good work). Then switched to a B-25 up to 7000, barely missed the column (no really on my second pass was hard to see http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif ) but got shot down on my way back by a certain Spit hating Italian (hey Manu). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Seems some guys do try to fly to objectives and I wanted to salute them make the game more enjoyable. Oh hi to Gozr and TX-Gunslinger...see you again soon.

Most people just seem to want to dogfight,going round and round in ever decreasing circles at 1000 meters.I have quite often taken a bomber and flown around safely blowing stuff up.

But sometimes you get a dozen fighters practically slamming into each other as they chase after a lone bomber because they all want to score an easy kill.

I`m one of the few on the red side who, while everyone is chasing their tails in circles after ONE blue plane, stays above or nearby looking for the sneaky bomber trying to slip by.

It so annoys me to see nearly everyone get so fixated on an unimportant bogey while two 110s or He111s sidle past at ground-hugging height and blow the pants off of everything, then quietly sneak out again!

That said, a squad m8 in a Mosquito and I in a Spitfire as protection flew low entered the enemy base and bombed the heck out of it, then returned in the same way. No one stopped us - I saw only one distance contact that maybe was wondering what was going on.

can work both ways I guess. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I get shot to pieces all the time when I fly bombers. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blush.gif

The best fun in the world though, is when a group of players all get into bombers and fly in formation to strike a target. That is amazing - both for the bomber jocks, and the fighter pilots who go after them. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

A couple older screenshots from HISTORIA (multiple bombers in a coordinated flight aren't uncommon there:

Yes, also in the sense I rarely get escorted. Never have flown in fomration either. Well once I called for help flying blue on Uk-Ded 1 (I was in a Ju-88) and got some help. I also said who and where I was so...

In all frankness, when I join 99% of dogfight servers (which is rare for me as I prefer coops)...I do one of three things;

* Bomb with a dedicated bomber 60% (HE-111, Ju-88, G4M1, B-25, A-20, IL2, Mosquito, Beau, etc.)
* Bomb with a heavy loadout fighter then RTB quick 20% (FW190, P-47, Tempest, BF-110, PE-2/3, etc.)
* Hunt bombers exclusively over target area's 20%.

I never waste my time getting into the train fights.

Past that I would escort if bombers would ever just announce their intentions when they're rolling NOT after they're being attacked 100km away..........Yet that's just a pipe dream.

Well with the sniper type gunners we have now... attacking bomber at 7000m is a tricky business...

Normally when you attack a bomber in a single engine plane (such as a Spit) you must carry a lot a speed and come screaming from above... a bomber coming in at 7000m as a good chance of survival as we have to climb slowly to it... and this is suicide... if you can't get an head on shot...

As it stands now... I don't go after bombers (read JU-88) anymore... got tired of diving at them at 800kph at a 40-60 degree angle... shooting them up from 400m to 50m and continuing my dive downward after my pass only to get hit by the belly gunner that saw me like 0.000001 sec... losing my prop governor and seizing my engine like 80% of the time...

I will go after He-111, BF-110 and Stukas.... love taking the He head on... instant pilot kill... or catching 110's in a turn... by by wing... the Stukas... well they are flying death traps...

No matter what bombers this gents are flying they do it professionally. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif
If they have A20's they'll be down in the weeds flying really tight formation.
If they fly B-25's they'll be flying high enough and tight enough that you can't do many passes on the formation without being chewed up by the gunners.
They never miss in level bombing and most of the time this guys will demolish a target in one flight. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

The last time I flew online, that's pretty much what I saw.

I was in a P-47, don't recall how high I was, when I saw a Betty below me. So, I roll over and head down after him, firing as I pass, and make an engine smoke a bit. I got around to his 9 o'clock, trying to get into range before I found myself on his 6 and a target for that damn 20mm in the tail. Next thing I know 4 more planes are chasing the Betty, blowing right by me like Ferraris overtaking a tank. Needless to say, I didn't get the kill. I was kinda pissed, because I try my best not to take anyone's kills. Mistakes happen, but geez.

If I'm on a server that has ground attack as a mission objective, I usually stay near my team's ground units and provide support, occasionally I'll escort one of our own bombers. Most of my meager list of kills are either bombers or fighters on strafing runs. I don't fly bombers, but I do recall one instance where I flew an IL-2 and no one bothered me until well after my bomb run.

When flying a medium bomber, I sort-of expect to be attacked by all the fighters at once.

One time on UKDed 2 I was PKed in a He111, so I switched to exterior view. My He was smoking and leaking fuel, and was in a gentle bank, slowly spiralling downwards. The AI gunners were still active though, and the fighters kept coming. I watched as my plane scored 2 kills while I was dead. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Last time I flew an IL2 (on UK Ded 2 again) I was attacked immediately after takeoff by a 109. I circled tight over the field in the hope that flak would get him.

While I circled and evaded, two VVS fighters (a Yak-1 and a Mig-3) were drawn to the sight of heavy flak over a friendly base. They dived in - and attacked ME! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

They must not have spotted the the 109, and thought that the base flak must be shooting at me. Ergo I'm the enemy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif I had to continue evading all the bright green tracer while trying to shout "FRIENDLY" in chat.

Luckily, they didn't get me. The 109 got away in all the confusion. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

The best fun I've ever had on line was massed Pe-2 missions (2 flights of four bombers) just after the Pe-2 add-on came out.

It was honestly worth the price of the add-on just for the six hours I spent online that day, formation bombing and conducting co-ordinated anti-shipping strikes. I even managed to hit a target or two.

Other great bomber moments include medium alt (4000m) bombing with three other B-25s on the old 4th FG server on the Guadalcanal map.

In the rare forays I have online now, I fly a Mosquito with an almoust religious fervour and I have to agree that CAP on ground targets and defensive patrolling seem to be something of a dying art, even on the more objective oriented servers.

My current record is 11 unintercepted sorties in a Mossie, and, if I've planned my route right, I'll usually average about four sorties without facing any serious opposition.

Running the lonely flight in at 6,500 ft and 290 mph, diving and dumping from 500 feet and then screaming away at 340 mph on the deck, all the time while sweating away because you just KNOW some bugger is lining you up is one of the more intense, and more enjoyable, IL-2 experiances you can have.

Personally, if I'm going to intercept bombers, the FW-190 and P-47 are the beasts of burden. Fast, heavy hitting and rugged. I'll get at least a few runs in at the target before having to bug out and dive for the deck because of bomber fire or enemy appearances.

I agree. It's a great server. I am one of those who will regularly escort bombers as they do their thing, or hunt them if they're about. Historia is the ONLY dogfight server where I have regularly had the opportunity to execute a classical head-on attack against a formation of B-25s in my Anton 6. They've usually (but not always) got escort, too.

Great DF server.

cheers,
