but I am having second thoughts. I read a lot of posts here, and a lot of people are NOT happy with FB. Any opinions that can help me make my decision...?

PS: Does FB have a dynamic campaign? That is the one thing about IL2 that I DON'T like...failing a mission means re-playing it over and over and over...

How many posts have you seen that claim there is something better out there?

How many of those posts name that other thing?

Why do those who are so unhappy play the game?

It's not perfect. Ther are errors. It's by a very very very far the best I've seen. The competition is so far behind.

Yes it has a dynamic campaign, but if you die you have to replay

I think you should buy it. It's only like $30 bucks. There are some new maps and new planes (the good). It has dynamic campaign too but I never fly offline to know what it's all about.

That's cool. Thanks for the input. I am in no way trying to trash FB---I have never played it. But, there *are* some people not-so-happy with it.

I think I am going to take the risk and buy the game. Who knows...I love IL2, maybe I will love FB as well...

There's an option that enables you to go to the next mission even if you fail, so you don't have to replay it until you succeed. Does not work if you die though. So you just have to survive to go to the next.

Buy it and play it, forget the whiners and look for the postivie.

For instance this evening I plan on making a pseudo WW1 co op using bi planes. Setting the time for just after dawn and adding some light flak.

This game is so atmospheric when you adjust the time settings.

Some people study books too much and profess to be experts, I just get on with the game with a few friends and some beer and enjoy my ‚£30 investment greatly.

People whine because they see that this sim is so close to be perfect and it's not, that they get frustrated.

Buy it.

Ok, the consensus seems to be FOR buying FB. Now...how do I play online? I see a bunch of (slightly angry) posts about dedicated servers and stuff...where does it all fit in?

People in this forum seem to be a bit...on edge. Makes me tense.

yes FB has Dynamic campaigns (although as it's based in history - you can't really change things that much!)

also -yes -buy it- it's great - it's not an amazing leap from IL2, but there's no doubt it's better - more planes, more maps, more objects(search lights and Barrage balloons), dynamic campaigns - use of skins for offline play, etc

IMO the majority of issues that it had, are gone now the 1.11 patch is out - It seems alot of people on this forum arn't happy unless they're moaning about something - usually cos thy're favourite plane isn't as good as they want it to be.

in fact offhand i can't really think of anything that i don't like about FB as it is at the minute.

buy it - it's the best sim around and you won't regret it

cool - two massive hercules just came right over my house - love it when they fly that low /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

First of all: The game is definitely worth every buck, I guess even the most fanatic whiner would agree. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You don't need the dedicated server software. You can play online "straigth from the box" on Ubi, or you can download the Hyperlobby software and play there.

And regarding the forum: Yep, this has got to be one of the most aggressive forums I've ever been on. Get used to it! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

UBI just released a dedicated server app that many are disappointed with, you can serve games outta the box, but it isn't a dedicated host.

A LOT of the complaints are of the ".50 cal machine guns can't penetrate the top turret armour of a tiger tank in real life", or plane "X" was faster in RL than plane "Y" sorta stuff.

Compared to other sims the visuals are great and it can be very enjoyable. I admit I'm one of those who's a tad frustrated at times, but the complaints here are similar to complaints in ALL flightsim forums I've been in.

You won't be disappointed if ya get this game, unless ya keep reading the forums /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

Go and buy it today essemm, it is simply the best WW2 combat simulation around by a mile.

Yes, you get some people whining about this and that on these boards but they are always very minor points from people who probably do hours and hours of flying in this game and know all the finer points of each aircraft. These people are also instrumental in getting patches to improve the game even further, as their attention to detail is amazing so in some ways it is a good thing.

You will be astounded by the graphics, sound, flight modelling, flight damage and all around immersion in this game, and overall there really is no other game that even comes close in this genre.

XyZspineZyX

Buy it! Play offline, get UQMG to replace the horrendous quick mission builder (it's exactly the same as the one in il-2), get online through hyperlobby or ubi.com, join a squadron and participate to an online war.

Don't miss the best wwii sim ever! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Note: I have a couple of gripes with the game. You may see me bickering about the AI and other offline shortcomings.. But in no way they keep me from having fun with FB.

If you don't want to commit nice money on TrackIR and have a webcam, try for free cam2pan (www.mousevision.com) (http://www.mousevision.com)). That, if well configured, works quite well.

Ummmm, why is the quick mission builder horrendous?http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So it could have been better but at least you can skin your aircraft in it which makes for some lovely replays and since the last patch they've been working for a change.

I get cheesed off every time my cursor slips off the slider but other than that it's not to bad when you look at flight sims generally, the QMB does the job for me.

I don't really like the whole "download the game" thing...especially if that game is in a genre where every sale helps keep it alive. Even if it is only for evaluation purposes.

Are you talking about QMB or UQMG? I was referring to QMB..

AFAIK, there's no way to create a coop mission with that.

Unless you want to do Air-to-Ground.. Then you get to destroy always the same thing on the same spot (for a given map).

After you've destroyed ten times the same truck column, it gets boring. UQMG, on the other hand, is much more varies..

I agree that as a quick dogfight tool the QMB is decent.
