View Full Version : Do you want Regenerating Health in FC3?

While it was a neat idea in the first Halo (they called it a 'Shield level' and you still had a physical health level that needed health pack pick-ups) I personally think regenerative health in games makes for a dull experience. I've been playing through the first Far Cry on my PC again, and part of the experience for me is having to use an air of caution when I'm rounding an unfamiliar corner and my health is low, or the absolute JOY when I find a body armor vest. Modern shooters don't have that, in fact, a lot of modern shooters make me feel like I'm back to playing DOOM on God Mode, except I'm not 12 years old any more and I would like a big-boy challenge with my purchase, please.

Here is a great article on regenerative health (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/8719-Extra-Punctuation-Why-Regenerating-Health-Sucks) by Yahtzee of The Escapist Magazine. He hit some real points that I hadn't thought of, but were rather kicking around in the back of my head in the "this doesn't feel right" section of my brain. I see regenerative health (among other things) as hand-holding, and frankly, it's hard for me to have an immersive experience as a bad-*** taking out waves of bad guys single-handed, when I apparently have the life force of a Norse God.

Maybe they'll eventually just make a game where if you leave it running for 70 years, the AI dies of old age and your immortal self wins by default... Or we could go back to fun, challenging experiences that make us think. Your choice, Ubi.

To me it's one of the main unique characteristics of FC2 that makes that different from other games. So, I'd definitely like to see it in the game, only that it could be more restricted, like a certain amount of time has to elapse, until you can do that again or something like this. (Or for example, it could be restricted to the number of bondages you carry, that you can pick up at ammo piles.)

Oh btw, I'm talking about multiplayer of course. That's what concerns mehttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
In single player I don't like challenges, so with regard that I vote for easy recovery.

I never tried the multiplayer, so I don't know how or why it would be different. I was speaking for a single-player story experience.

Pure Health Regeneration would ruin the game for me. I like the suvival type aspect of Far Cry and regerating health is way too easy and unrealistic. However Far Cry 2's "Semi Regeneration" wasn't that bad but it would be cool to have the option to turn it off completely.

People who aren't registered can view it but cannot vote.

It belongs in the campaign only and would be a cool on off switch for multiplayer.

With regards the single player: I'm playing another campaign in FC2 at the moment, and I'm not using the Syrettes. I only allow myself to restore health by finding one of the bottles that are lying around, or sleeping in one of the safe houses.

Ideally in FC3 single-player, I'd like the regeneration to be optional, but if it's as it is in FC2, that's ok as I can just choose not to use it.

I prefer the "semi regen" and syrettes since it'd make FC2 unique in the age of regen health. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree that it would be nice to turn it off, and/or place health kits at strategic places within maps.

i liked the way you healed yourself in FC2. if they fixed the random ways to heal, like almost drowning makes it so you have to pull glass out of your leg, then go for it. I'm not too fond of the COD way of healing, where it does it automatically.

I want limbs being crippled and bleeding injuries that can kill u hours after you've been shot. Just realism

I really don't like regenerating health and think it ruins the experience. I really did enjoy the FC2 semi regen system and I do like no regen at all.. So if it has one of the two I'll be happy either way. One thing they MUST keep is pulling out shrapnel from your body etc. I thought that was a pretty nice feature

I liked the system they used in FC2. Keep it the way that it is!

The Far Cry series always feels like a semi role playing shooter to me. I enjoy exploring the world and watching the animation of removing bullets etc. It makes it so immersive.

Full regen would kill the experience and make me a sad panda...

I agree with the way FC2 does healing, both in multiplayer and single player. Sometimes, while tempting to tweak things, you just don't want to mess with perfection because it only gets worse from there. ;-)

I suppose it's a hard one this time round...
The campaign map is going to be Gigantanourmus making health "pickup" points harder to find or they are going to have a lot of out of place shacks or buildings scattered everywhere just for that reason. I prefer picking up/carrying health but there needs to be something "less obvious"
I'd love to see the collection of certain leaves or grasses that heal full/partial when eaten, not really in a Res Evil way, just two types, one heals a little while another heals a lot. Or drinking from a fresh water supply gives you a boost.
Multiplayer doesn't bother me too much, I personally hated digging out the shrapnel, it was to slow and clumsy but I'm more of a campaign man.

The healing system in FarCry 2 is more realistic. If the FCIP Noobs get their way it would be healthpacks. I believe it will be more like FarCry 2 except it will have that crappy kill cam . ooooh save meee! Mashes buttons while looking at a horrible kill cam.

The health system of Far Cry 2 was one of the best things in the MP I really liked it please bring it back :)

The health system of Far Cry 2 was perfect as regards the singleplayer: the fact that you need to cure yourself, instead of waiting a magic regeneration of the health, contributes to give the sense of realty.
But as regards the multiplayer, I found the health system of FC2 a bit boring.
I realize that would be very hard to find a compromise between the fans of FC:
personally, I would like to be able to cure myself during the singleplayer
and just wait the regeneration of the health during the multiplayer,
many other players find the regenerative health such as a gadget for the noobs,
other players are accustomed to play with it.
Maybe, the best compromise would be to mantain the 'semi regenerative' sectional health from FC2 with a little improvement:
when you are curing yourself, if someone shoots you, you need to be able to bring back your weapon even if you didn't complete your cure.

Eating herbs and drinking water? Nah, its much better to use RL herbs that adds to the whole survivor feeling. I mean if you want to give the player the feeling of being survivor you will have to go for the full 100%.There's enough RL herbs that we could employ ingame. Applying them could be a simple animation of pressing the herb on the wound. Plus we could add bandages and painkillers aswell.
