It's very good. If you decide to get it. Tell me what your going to pay, and i'll sell you one for $10 cheaper. I got sent two of them by mistake. It's still in the box. Brand new, never even opened.

No Chimp. That's why I have two. I already had Vol2, and I thought I was ordering Vol 1, but it turned out to be Vol 2. That's how I ended up with two of them.

Both volumes are excellent. They give a very detailed and readable picture of the Eastern Front air war and are ideal for those (like me) who were totally ignorant of that sphere of battle beforehand.

Vol. 3 should be out later this year - I can't wait, it will cover the Stalingrad air battles & should be easily as exciting as the first two volumes. I believe the author is working on getting reprints of the earlier volumes underway (he changed publishing companies) - as others point out, Vol. 1 is now very difficult to find unless you pay a fortune for it.

"Vol. 3 should be out later this year - I can't wait, it will cover the Stalingrad air battles..."

Yes, and so will my next book - "Graf & Grislawski: A Pair of Aces", which deals with the two German Eastern Front fighter aces Hermann Graf and Alfred Grislawski. It will be published within the next few days. See:

http://www.graf-grislawski.elknet.pl/index.htm

Regarding "Black Cross/Red Star", Vol. 3, it will be published by the same publisher (Eagle Edition) who does the Graf&Grislawski book. It will be out around early 2004. See:

http://www.bergstrombooks.elknet.pl/bc-rs/

There's much information not only on the books, but on the air war on the Eastern Front in general, on those two websites.

It might also be of interest to visit the IL-2/FB desction of the Graf & Grislawski website. Together with Cpt Farell and some mission builders, missions based on actual events in the Graf & Grislawski book will be created. There already are a number of high-quality skins by Cpt Farell and Claes Sundin:

I emailed the publishers of the first two volumes and asked if they had plans to reprint the first volume. The reply was a curt "no plans at all".

So you guys might want to email them with similar requests to let them know that people are interested in this particular volume.

That's great to hear Christer. I'll buy Graf & Grislawski as soon as it hits the shelves.

As for reprints of Vol 1, do you have any info on that or do we have to go treasure hunting on the internet again /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Mr Lerxster, if you are going to e-mail any publisher and ask for a new edition of "Black Cross/Red Star", Vol. 1, then you should e-mail no one else than Eagle Editions, who has taken over from Vol. 3. You'll find the URL and e-mail address to Eagle Editions here:

Yes, Capt. Arnold, I think they will consider doing a second edition of Vol. 1. I _think_.

UR Spinne, yes, I play IL-2/FB. (Maybe you've noticed in the acknowledgment section in the booklets to both IL-2 and FB that I've been actively cooperating with Oleg Maddox since the early development days.) I think it's a great flight sim.

Yesterday, I was flying Alfred Grislawski's Bf 109 F-4 "Yellow 9" as wingman to Hermann Graf's Bf 109 F-4 "Yellow 1" in combat against eight I-16s. I try to recreate some of the combats that Grislawski told me about, and that are described in my book ("Graf & Grislawski").

I've told Alfred Grislawski about IL-2/FB, and that it is possible to fly his old aircraft and recreate some of his missions, and he said that he would be interested in seeing a video or so of it.

Here is Alfred Grislawski nowadays:

Please post Mr Grislawski's oppinions about FB here if he ever sees a video of or tries FB. It would be very interesting to hear his comments on various issues. Not to stir up any FM debate, just very very interesting.

Thx in advance

Wow! I'm surprised to find out that Vol.1 has become somewhat rare. I found it earlier this spring in a Barnes and Noble military section. It might be worth it just to poke around in your local chain bookstores or checkout the used books from Amazon.

And @ Mr. Bergstrom: an excellent book (vol.1). I just finished reading it. I look forward to reading the next two volumes.

Fornixx, please excuse me for my ignorance, but:

1. Is it possible to record an FB mission on a video tape?

2. What is an FM debate?

Foxce, they are written in English.

I'm reading Volume 2 because I can't wait for Volume 1. Looking forward to both Vol 1 and 3! hehe.

Recording missions:
There are programs that save/capture what is displayed in a window (for example a FB mission) into a file that can be played on a computer. A good tip is to contact Hunter82 (a moderator on this forum) via PM. He if anyone should know the best way to record a mission.

FM debate:
FM = Flight Model (how the planes behave in the air). There have been countless discussions on this forum regarding the flight models of the different planes in the game and some of the debates have naturally become quite heated. On occation there have even been efforts to show the sim to Luftwaffe veterans in order to support one view or another. What I meant was simply that Mr Grieslawski's general opinion regarding the sim would be extremely interesting to hear, but not in order to support one FM view or another.

I have started by buying books about the eastern front and planes shortly after starting to play IL-2 (last year around summer).
That's the way I have found that "Black Cross Red Star" is THE book. Volume 2 was no fuss to get..amazon/b&nobles/buy.com, etc...prices compared...got it from Amazon for 27 and change and free shipping.
Now...the quest started when I wanted to get my hands on Vol.1. Wrote to Mr. Bergstrom but he did not have any idea how to locate one, wrote to Eagle and got response from none other than Eric Hammel who told me that even he has problems locating a second volume for himself.
I was able to locate some exemplaries of Vol 1 but for huge prices or in Asia...
So...I started hunting for it on Amazon...two times a day, checking if someone has one to sell for a resonable price and at least in good condition. It took me two months, three canceled orders from the seller to put my hands on onehttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) It was advertised as "in good condition, with a small 2 cm rip in the dust jacket". I payed for regular shipping...but the book came EXPRESS, 2nd dayhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. The real condition? Beside that small rip (which I've repaired) the book is MINT...even in better condition than the Volume 2 bought as NEW from AMAZON (and came in shrink wrap...)
Well...my advice...don't despair and keep looking...you never know when you get lucky.
As for a reprint...I have posted about it on this forum before...exaclty the same problem...but then no one seemed to need one.
So...I have the power, I am the master, the key holder...and the Vol1 readerhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif))

Regarding a new edition of "Black Cross/Red Star", Vol. 1, I just hear from my publisher (Eagle Editions) that after "Graf & Grislawski: A Pair of Aces" (which will be out within the next few days) and "Black Cross/Red Star", Vol. 3, they will have a serious look at a second edition of "Black Cross/Red Star", Vol. 1. I can assure everyone, that what I have in mind in that regard is a considerably revised edition, with much new information, improved printing quality, many new photos, color profiles, etc.

But, as everyone ought to know by now, before that, my dual biography on the two Eastern Front aces Hermann Graf and Alfred Grislawski will be published. See:
