The so-called "fishing trawler is actually a Sea Truck!

Japanese trawlers had stacks. This is a sea truck for sure, ~150 gross tons, I'd need a waterline length to be sure.

Once the Japanese realized that larger merchant shipping was getting slaughtered, they started a massive program to build smaller shipping to move men and materiel to the front. Sea Trucks ("Sugar Dog" to the US by code) were the answer.

"Barge hunting" was typically vs landing craft, actual barges that were towed, "luggers," and the slightly larger wooden sea truck. (luggers and sea trucks seem to get blurry in terms of distinction since many sea trucks operated with diesel only and masts taken down.)
