I was playing IL2 offline, QMB bf-109g vs Yak 1s and 9s in early 1943. After getting hit by a yak, while I was pursuing another yak(useless wingman) anyway, I shot down the yak I was pursuing and noticed the plane handleing funny. Did a external and there were 3 huge holes in my bfs fuselage. the plane was becomming difficult to handle. I thought of landing in the nearest field. Then I tried to see how far it would go. My wingmen shot down two more yaks so I figured I was safe. After a few minutes, the handeling inproved. So much so I tried to see if I could do any strenous maneuvering. I did loops and barrell rolls, seeing if the fuselage would come off. It did'nt. I made an easy landing at home base.

My question is: Is this normal for handling to improve after battle damage? And how come the tail did not come off during hard maneuvering?

Maybe you could maneuver one way better than another, but both ways i doubt it. Damage is damage and it is never good.

As far as structural damage due to hard manuvering it isn't modeled in the sim

I think it is, at least in some planes. I've had a wing come off when flying a IL-2. It had received a bunch of bullets before, and I was doing a hard turn. Nobody was shooting me in the moment the wing fell off.

Maybe fuel being used/ammo spent made the plane lighter and therefore handle better? Did the change happen instantly or was it gradual? I know the P-51D had handling problems when the aft fuel tank in the fuselage was filled.

Kinda sudden. The holes were HUGE. I would say about 40% of the fuselage from the cocpit to the tail unit was gone.

Maybe one explanation is that the graphical DM that one sees doesn't represent exactly the damage that has been recorded by the FM's DM (there are minor, moderate and serious damage levels depicted for different parts of the ac).

The FM's damage model is very detailed (look at a pre-FB "dev. update"'s screenie of the FMDM of a Me109, as an example) whereas the graphical representation of damage is less so- and prone to some "artistic license" (exageration) as to how damaged an aircraft could be and still be controlled; example: the Me-109s graphical DM shows (heavy damage) a huge gaping hole in the rear of the fuselage through which you can see clear through, but I find that apart from loss of top speed, handling and hardmanoevering are unaffected. In real life you might be able to land that sucker but you sure wouldn't want to throw it around -

What's weird is that you found that your damage improved!

Final thought:
I think structural failure is modelled in certain respects. When I hit an enemy ac on the wing root with a cannon round (as you know, I like to fly the Yak 9k and fire the rounds singly) it will often continue to go straight with the wings attached but when the opponent pulls up his wing rips off /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Cheers -

Erm... try diving a Yak to 700 km/h and pull a 6g turn - BOO, where`s my wings ?!

As for damage to components reducing their durability in maneuvers, i dunno.

structual Damadge is moddeled ( very slightly ) in FB

do you have a pic of your damadge BF ?

get a screen shot whenever something similer or otherwise weird happens like that & show us

pics of FB of damadged planes are pics i like best so of course i was going to ask for a pic when you said " heavily Damadged " tho
