Ive found this wikipedia article : GDR Jokes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDR_jokes) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Make sure to check out the Stasi jokes aswell as the Trabant jokes.

This is my favourite : http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

During a visit to the Leipzig Trade Fair a filthy rich oil sheikh heard that there is a car with a delivery time of over ten years.

Since Rolls Royce usually delivers more quickly than that, it must be quite an exceptional car, which he would certainly have to have in his collection.

Sight unseen, he made a request to order this Trabant. In Zwickau they're aware of this great honor, so they immediately change the running Five-Year Plan and bring forward a specimen. In the container, the car reaches the emirate in a handful of weeks.

The happy oil sheikh immediately called his friends together, opened the container, and surprisedly exclaimed: "Gosh, they have incredibly long delivery times, but at least they send you a cardboard model in advance - and the best, you can even drive it!"

Excellent post Cel http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

These are my favourites;

# How do you double the value of a Trabant? Fill up the tank!
# What do you call a Trabant with dual exhaust pipes? A wheelbarrow!
# How do you turn a Trabant into a sports car? Put sneakers in the trunk!

*** the 'O' silently (d'huh) counts out the remainder of his life savings to see if he can afford the 10K Euros ***

So there is a term 'Ostalgia' for love of the past east Germany -- count me in! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

BMW made engine??? I bet you it will be very similar to the MINI COOPER engine.

As a kid I used to go the the Frankfurt Auto show when we lived there. That was ONE BIG car show!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

The 'O' still has space for one more auto in his Garage!!!!

Talking about the Trabi has just jogged my memory, my father visited Berlin in 1990 I think, or not very long after the wall came down on a business conference and I remember him bringing me back a small Trabant toy along with some "genuine" Berlin Wall barbed wire in a special commemorative box, I'm pretty sure this barbed wire was genuine stuff http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif but you could never be too sure these days...

That article is a bit strange. 10.000 Euros for a restored Trabi ?

What i have seen so far on ebay did not cost more than 5.000 Euro for one of the oldest models.

Usually they want 2000 to 3000 Euro for one but not 10.000 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

"The new Trabant will cost five times than that"

Yeah right. A 50.000 Trabant ?? That would change the class and the whole idea of this car.

What part of it will still be a Trabant ? Nothing !

Thats the price of a limousine like a BMW , Mercedes or Audi not of an affordable middle-class car.

If this is true , this new Trabant would have nothing in common with the original, except the name.

Even VW did not go that far with the "New Beetle" and that one was already way too expensive and luxury like to be brought into any real connection with the original one except its name.

It did not sell very good while the original beetle became the second most sold car in the world. (Because it was good AND most important : cheap !) It was a car for university students, hippies and artists and young people without a buck in the pocket in general.

A car for the common people which everyone could afford.

Nothing is cheap on the "new Beetle" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif It costs quite a sum and is not as technically robust than the original because of its complexity. It will never become a seller.

If it does not have a two-stroke engine I'm NOT interested............

Yeah right. A 50.000 Trabant ??

That HAS to be an error: ....The BMW version of the MiniCooper sells in the $20,000 range in the U.S.

A BMW powered version of the Trabant simply CAN'T cost more than twice as much to make.

Re Honecker jokes.......
Man asks another man "Have you ever eaten a Honecker schnitzel?" and gets the reply "No, I haven't". This immediately gets the rejoinder "Kann ja auch nicht, das Schwein lebt ja noch!" (You can't have anyway, the pig's still alive).

Herpa (company that builds model-cars; they own the licences for the "Trabant") will show a 1:10 model of a new "Trabbi" at the IAA in September. They try to find an investor to build ~ 1500 "real cars" or even more...

Thanks for the pic Mittelwaechter http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I like the design but the windows are bit too small and the doors to high.

The front looks ok so far. Like a "Trabbi" with "Mini 2" design elements http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

But can anyone really beat this look ?? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

Look ! It says : "Im your friend http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif your companion...Im easy to repair and wont cost you much money....Jump in and lets take a ride !" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

"You will freeze your a++ off in me in the wintertime and my seats are not that comfortable ....ok......but im still your friend and wont leach your money out of your wallet." http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

A UK registered Trabi? Wow http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif Mind you I've never seen one on the roads though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Talking about that Trabant posted by Mittelwaechter, those high windows look very familiar;

Is it me or are there some strange similarities? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

My father raced his VW beetle during the 1960's.
Made his own modifications for the purpose, including hollowing out the engine's flywheel to reduce weight! Won a few races with it too.

I can still remember he and his friend in our garage, spraypainting the Beetle silver over top of it's original cream color .... it came out looking like galvanized iron!
