For as long as I have been playing the IL2 series I have used two FOV's while flying on and offline. A wide(ish) 80 for general flying and looking around, and zoomed 45 for close quarters wh

So was it an Atari gaming system that you played IL-2 on in 1981? I know I used to play a tennis game that had excellent graphics with a small white dot that bounced off a 1/2" straight line for a paddle and a deep, rich black background that took my breath away it was so beautiful.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

It was an early-alpha version, very hard to find, and I got 35 fps on my Coleco system. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I do most of my flying in maximum wide view. For shooting when the enemy is in my gunsight I use something between normal view and max zoom depending of the range visibility and how well i can see him. For Deflection shots wider view. I judge the movement better in wide view.

I have zoom on a slider on my throttle, so it's more or less a smooth movment most of the time, depending on the situation.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Was that shot from a Full Real server? Must be since there aren't any icons. On the other hand it was external view.

I do use zoom liberally. In fact I have my CH pro throttle set up with a script to to increase/decrease for as long as I keep the button pressed.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

As a mudmover using zoom is essential to acquire the ground targets. In anything less than perfect weather it is extremely difficult to see ground targets even if you have them marked on your map. Its OK if they are firing at you, but if not I tend to zoom right in over the known target area to locate vehicles/guns, then back to normal view when the target is acquired and wide view for climbing and banking for another run. I have the zoom toggle fixed to a button on my joystick.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Should have mentioned that I am also using TIR3 with my two FOV's.

My stick is a Saitek Evo FFB. When my HAT switch became redundant with the purchase of TIR I assigned trim to HAT... UP/DOWN for elevator TRIM, LEFT/RIGHT for aileron trim. SHIFT+LEFT/RIGHT for rudder trim. I use buttons 5 and 6 (left and right of the HAT) for FOV. I have 5 for wide view 80, not 55 as mentioned in my OP (I was at work and it was late!), and button 6 for zoomed view 45 (a few degrees wider than gunsight view to allow some TIR movement).

I will probably stick with using two FOV's based on what I've read here, but might increase the wide and narrow angles of FOV.

Thanks for the replies http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

In fact, max zoom gives the most aproximate size of real things as they are in RL, with the less distortion ('distant' FOVs make look the cockpit like you are in a gothic church).

When you're in a real cockpit, your shoulders are almost touching the canopy -specially true in very cramped pits like 109's- and you can almost blur everything with your breath. Normal FOVs in FB give a fishbowl representation of your 3D world to compensate for the absolute lack of peripheral view, making things look very distant and distorted.

If not for the ridiculous small 'window' we have to peep thru, max zoom would be the better and most realistic option.

I use something simliar with my CH Gear, although I use a 4-way switch instead of the 8-way hat:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/T_O_A_D/Smilies/icon_arrow_up.gif Gunsite Zoomed [shift = Toggle Gunsight (SHF F1)]

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/T_O_A_D/Smilies/icon_arrow_right.gif Wide View

I rarely switch between pilot & gunner, so maybe I will think about swapping that with the Shift-F1 view...

I use various forms of zoom all the time. I use it for aircraft identification, ground target confirmation and fighting.

Toggling between the different views becomes almost second nature after awhile and mine is set on a 4-way switch on my throttle.

Dang you are right is not on a slider. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif
I have it maped on the mouse cursor switch on the X45 throttle. I made a macro for it and when i move the button up and down it increases/decreases the zoom.
Is quite a smooth transition.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
