For anyone interested in WWI aircraft, there was a documentary on CH4 last night and it's available online: http://www.channel4.com/progra...ed-baron/4od#3075340 (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/fighting-the-red-baron/4od#3075340)

They train two ex Red Arrows pilots to fly WWI aircraft and they do a mock dogfight at the end of the programme. The look on their faces is a picture when they are told that to land their Avro 504 the only way to slow down is to deliberately cut the engine! The dogfight was a bit lame IMHO and I'm not sure it was fair matching a SE5 against a 2-seater ground attack plane, but the gunnery was interesting to watch. It was good hearing about real-life pilots such as Albert Ball and Werner Voss (two of the best pilots in the war and both only 20 when they died).

I found the program a particularly well done presentation. It has far more detail (such as how to conduct artillery spotting) than is usually included in such programs. Thanks again.

Was quite intrigued to see a young and attractive woman as a WWI historian!! More of them please!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

There are a number of attractive young women studying history of different eras at my uni, but very few of them really seem to have more than just a passing interest in their chosen subject which I find a pity, and at times annoying when you try and engage with them about history... Often they just say something generic and then switch the subject to what someone said on facebook or something more inane.

Is it just me or what? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

It's probably you. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

My kind of historian: Bettany Hughes (http://www.bettanyhughes.co.uk/welcome.htm). Anyone who saw her programme about Helen of Troy will know that she likes to draw parallels...

I watched her recent programme about Atlantis which was intriguing. And also the programme on the Moors in Spain was pretty good.

Saw it yesterday and it was really good http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Especially the real Avro and the SE.5 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Regarding the death of Albert Ball, they forgot to mention that a german officer on the ground saw Ball's SE.5 fall out of the cloud he was last seen flying into to pursue Lothar von Richthofen.

According to him, Ball's SE.5 fell upside down out of the cloud (early SE.5 engines could not suck in fuel when flying inverted) and the wreck showed no signs of bullet holes.

Its highly likely that his crash was due to loosing orientation and making a fatal flying mistake inside that cloud.

He was still alive when a french woman pulled him out of the wreck but died shortly after.

The results of the autopsy by a german doctor where : broken back, and crushed chest as reason of death along with several lesser injuries. No bullet wounds.

Nonetheless Richthofen was credited with the kill although he clearly stated that he shot only one plane down that day and that was a Sopwith Triplane, not a SE.5

Propably a propaganda decision from high above.

Also, ... cold blooded prussian ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Being a prussian myself i say there is nothing wrong with warming oneself by the use of a big block of ice. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Also, I think that picture of Bettany is a few years old. She's still quite attracive, but she has expanded somewhat since that photo was taken!

So basically one of you is suggesting that I over modeled one of the ladies (even though my only role in the issue is merely that I selected a picture. (I didn't code her I just took a screenshot!) And the other one of you is suggesting that the other lady is under modeled.

This debate will never be solved until some charts are posted by someone. Or perhaps some NACA data from wind tunnel testing is found.
