View Full Version : Aerobatic Competition

A while back we ran an aerobatic competition on line using IL2. We had a good laugh too!

You can have a laugh at our attempts to gain that perfect score here: http://www.battle-fields.com/article.php?artid=46

Well I intend to do it again! We are trying to work out how to make it better, perhpas we will just ask folk to send in their tracks using a map we supply or it may be live.

You can have your say on our forums, let us know if you want to have just solo flights or / and formation display.

Well thank you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

IT was a good laugh! I think we should get this going, we have a box full of prizes we could sort something out for the winning pilot (pillock?). THen we could pass the top 5 tracks over to our movie making friends to make a movie for people to view of the entire event!

this sounds like a good idea. i made a map for just this type of thing a while ago and it has some interesting (and fun) elements in it. an aerobatic competition would be fun, hope i can participate.

XyZspineZyX

We need to get a sequence together so everyone has to fly the same and then allow say 4 minutes or 5 minutes of freestyle.

the map needs no cloud and a big concrete runway so we can use the runway as the datum for the display.

I just signed up. Do you a special catagory for lowest bailout, or widest spread of wreckage? In all seiousness, how about recovering the P-39N1 from a flat spin, from, let's say . . . 2,000 m's?

I think that this, as well as the air racing, the formation flying, and the movie making, are unbelievable examples of the tremendous depth of this simulation. ~S~ to you, Bonehead and crew, for expanding the horizons of what we can all do with this game.

Well like I said when we have about 15 people (nearly there http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Ill close the signup. Then Ill tell you all what patterns are needed to be flown.

I was thinking that it would be best if you then go off and record a track of you flying the sequence and then email it to us. We will then judge each one and draw up a list of winners.

We thought about maybe arranging a live event but I know what trying to get 15 people into a server at the right time is like, a nightmare!

Justa tip though I think to make it fair on everyone we need to keep the manouvers fairly simple to start with. If you want to practice I suggest using a map with a concrete runway as you will be expected to maintain the centre line whilst performing some manouvers. Also fly with no ammo and 25% fuel to keep wait down.

Also practicve spins and recovery http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Theres your clue for the first manouver!

WE have a practice server up with the map you will need to use running right now on HL its called UK dedicated.

We are just going to take entries for solo to start with (3 more entries and we have enough) and we will see how that goes.

If you revisit the details page you will see a link at the bottom to the map we will all be using.

http://www.battle-fields.com/aeros/aerobatic.php

So download that and get familiar with it, I have also flown the sequence (badly!) and recorded that track so you can see what it is. I will releasse that this weekend. Its short and sweet and fairly basic to give everyone a chance.

I don't think is fair to record a track and submit it.I'm saying that because one can fly 20 times until the whole show is perfect. I think is better if is ONE event with ONE attempt. You can practice but if you fail then you can't hit refly.think about ... olyimpics if you want. You train yourself years and you're good , but if when the moment comes ... you have to be fit ,otherwise everything is wasted. I suggest that everyone should be on the server at a specified hour. If is not possible for some to be at a certain hour then makee two groups. Then choose the order of flying ,randomly or do draw. I think this way it will really sounds like a competition. The other problem is about the planes flown. Some are well suited for aerobatics , some less. Will ppl flying the TB3 have some extra points compared with the ones flyin' Yak3? Or everybody will fly the same plane? I know that this sounds serious , but it has to be someehow balanced.
Thx for your time.

Also with tracks you could cheat by using time compression or pausing.

How about you schedule multiple dates for the competition, like 2 or 3 days. Then people can come on the day they are available. You can make tracks during the meets, and review them to choose a winner.

How do you want to play HL or Ubicom?

We have a dedicated server we can use (in london) which might be best but if we put it on HL you will have to use the joining software that is knocking around. TBH I would rather use HL as our server crahes when we use UBI.

Let me know

The routine is out now too, so get practicing!

Prizes will be a couple of games (non flight sims) and anything else we can lay our hands on from our LAN party, prolly Tshirt etc.

I signed up for the contest, but now i understand everybody has to fly the same sequence. Any particular resons for that? I think everybody should be allowed to show the most impressive maneuvers they can perform, insted of flying the same given sequence. I would like to fly the plane i'm most cofortable with (109K4) and try to get the most out of it, but obviously i won't be able to compete with the Yak3 if i'm restricted to fly the same maneuvers.
If this is not going to change, i'm sorry but i'm not going to show up for the contest.

If you wnat to enter a competition where you just pitch up and try to impress / scare the judges thats cool we can run one just for fun too with no prizes.

Hi BTZ_Bonehead,

This saterday is good with me, are you in UK if so could you give me the flying time. I my self would pefure between 9pm-10pm.

One more thing I do not know how any one can say they are too good for this event. I my self do not care if I win loose, get any prizes. Just want to enjoy participating and watching the other competitors. This is the problem with this game, sone one shoots a guy down and thinks he is an ace /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

But I do wish we could have people flying one at a time though. some guy doing rolls with a guy on his 6 doing some thing else, will get confusing /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

"some guy doing rolls with a guy on his

That is why I asked if there was a specific formation routine, and who said that they were too good for this?

I have been working for years to get this aspect of sims to take off, and I am thrilled to see that you guys are making this happen. I hope it is OK for me to add a link that might be interesting to you all. I have been pushing this sim to many of my friends in the airshow industry, and I think that all is missing is the people to push it forward by participating.

Hi TX-EcoDragon,

You mean that you wish to start a formation flying team?
Just afew monthes ago there was a very good video called 'Silver' made by a group of canadian pilots.
Flying very low in a two plane formation doing splits, half rolls etc. Very good video!

Just search the web and I am sure you will find other aerobatics teams.
I think the problem is things get going then just die, like air racing.
Maybe in future some one could invite some aerobatics teams and have a big air show! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

But for now I am working on this, at the least we will get some interest and thing may go from there.

Dont quit any one, if you do it will be much easier for me to win! hehe, I made a really cool film last night. Better than I ever thought I could do /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . But I cant show any one or you may copy /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

HD_Erik,

Read the link that I posted or check my sig, there is an international competition starting, that is sponsored by the organizers of the real event.

I was a member of the founding team, and I know the other ones that are out there, what I am trying to do is to not only get more teams to form, and to bring people over from other sims and real world aviation, but to encourage them to get serious about it to the extent that they are prepared for the upcoming competitions with the FAI Aerobatics Grand Prix. The team known here as the PAV/VHVT that I flew with set this in motion, but it will take some interested groups, with appropriate preparation and skill to make this have an impact in the real world aerobatics realm.

Anyway, I just thought that some people here might be interested in hearing about this is they haven't already.

And thanks to the BTZ folks for setting this one up too, it looks like great fun!

OK lets try for saturday night then!

The details of our server will be in the thread I mentioned earlier at our website forums.

Also if you could check the server rules on our site. It may sound a bit harsh but we do not like folk swearing or being abusive on our servers, it spoils it for the rest of our visitors. So if you crash do it quietly LOL http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Ill start the server at 07:00 UTZ thats 20:00 UK time.

It will be in hyper lobby. if all competitors can be in the server if all goes well it shold take no more than 2 hours tops. If you cant make it Saturday let me know in our forums and i will set it up again on Sunday some time to finish it all off.
