Hi, welcome aboard.

That link redirects to the main site for some reason. Try this one. It's at the bottom of the page.

That recording is real AFAIK. I like to close my eyes and listen to it and image myself on that Lanc in the pitch dark with only the fires and spolights below illuminating the sky. Sorta scarey.

I find that link redirects to the front page as well. You can get The lanc recording by choosing the 'aircraft photos' page and then the Lancaster link.

Remember that gigantic thread we had on swearing? I KNEW the RAF would be swearing on air - and here it is on a recording broadcast on the BBC! Imagine what the ones unfit for broadcast were like!

That's because ppl have to remove the checkmark "Auto-link URLs and Images" before posting. I had that problem too. So what anyone should do is copy the exact link and paste it in the adress bar if ye want to go to the URL.

Come on guys! You dont beleive it's a recording from a real lanc do you?!!!?!?!

This was recorded by the BBC in their studios in London for broadcast in 43.

Spot these 10 main points:

1) All crew accents are those of officers, eg proper queen's english.
2) The lanc weaves, gets shot at by AA,drops bombs and shoots down a fighter all in one heroic move.
3)the bombdoors open with no added internal noise.
4)the upper turret guns are louder than the engines (which dont exist on the recording at all.
5) A german nightfighter attacks over a flak area (possible but...)
6) a lancaster shoots down a german nightfighter with two very short bursts, and SEES IT GOING IN!
7) A german night fighter attacking from above.
8) A cool gunner does not seems the least bit surprised by all of this.
9) Endless chatter back and forth over the intercom on an oparation.
10) Unusable radio procedures (unless of course you stand in a studio!)

Not to mention : No engine interference with the intercom, crystal clear coms all the time, and crystal clear recordings of what must have been quite a feat of getting a 1943 type valve oparated recording device inside a lancaster /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

That was interesting, but remnded me a lot of those wartime paperback comics!

For a better look at the insides of a lanc on operations, I recommend readinf Deighton's "Bomber" novel.

And if ever the opportunity arrises, go for a flip in a WW2 era bomber or even twin engined plane like a Dakota , and hear those engines and scream over them on the coms!

Also, as a recording engineer, I can spot fake cheering a mile away.

Listen to it again

Lol! Bloody good show chaps!

Bomber is an awesome book, i would say i re-read it almost once every year, recommend it to all.

Who said it was night time?

I thought it was a great bit of propaganda portraying the events of many bombers on a run in 1943 genuine or not it dont matter.

Alpha

Infact relistening the sounds are there Merlins in the background statics on recording and not all the crew used officers english but remember back then even middle class people spoke in a way we now consider posh with the demise of the English language being dumbed down.

In 1943 no Lancaster bombed Berlin in daylight as far as I know. and if one did, it almost certainly did not live to tell.

I can agree with you on the language point, but it is simply another piece of the pussle to me, not evidence in it's own right.

As for the background engine sounds, they are simply not there. If they were you would have heard them clearly. Take a flip in a small Cessna and hear how loud that lawnmower engine is!

Yes, I agree it is a nice piece of propaganda. I enjoyed it also. It's good entertainment.

The rest of the site is not bad either.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. No way, even on an internal link, recorded on magnetic wire, would you not hear those engines. Every bloody rivet popped in those things with the noise. Nice dialogue though.

Dude, where's my party?
