I'm Argentinean too. Argentina was neutral during WWII, mostly because the military goverments of the time were opposing the pressure by the US to join the war. The public opinion was split between the axis and allies sides. Argentina finally cut relations with the axis countries in 1944 and declared war on Germany and Japan in 1945, when everything was finished and only as a diplomatic gesture towards the US. Brazil declared war on Germany in 1941, soon after the US did it.

I never heard of Luftwaffe bases in Argentina. I think is an urban legend.

It is true that some nazis escaped to Latin America, to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and some other countries.

Another real story: The design of Pulqui 2 was assisted by Kurt Tank (FW designer) and in the flying testing of this plane took place Adolf Galland. See (for pictures):

(The pulqui 2 looks really nice!)

One of the Horten Brothers went to Argentina, if I'm not mistaken he designed a jet fighter for the Argentinian AF.

EDIT:

Doh! Just looked it up, Kurt Tank Designed Argentina's jet. It was ahead of it's time in some ways, reminds me of the Avro Arrow story.

Here is a brief history about the Brazilian involvement at WWII.

http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Bunker/3351/campaigns/brzedit.html

and here, specific about the Brazilian Air Force: http://www.rudnei.cunha.nom.br/FAB/eng/guerra.html

(all in english)

For true, we know that only Brazil and Mexico in Latin America send troops and Air Aorce to fight the WWII. Many brazilian ships were sunked at our coast in 42/43 by germans U-boats, cose our bases supported allied convoys to Europe.

A Brazilian PBY sunk down the U-199 in Rio de Janeiro (july 31, 1943) and USAF using PBMs from the 74th based at Salvador and Recife sunjked down more 12 U-boats at our coast, includind the Italian "Barbagio". (not sure about the number os U-boats).

The only reference i have about Luftwaffe in Brazilian soil is thet we produced many FW-58 "Wheine". The Brazilian Air Force Museum at Rio d Janeiro have the last of those planes in the world.

After WWII, many nazis gone to Argentina and Uruguay.

Aviation history books writen by non-biased researchers, like Nordeen (Air Warfare in the Missile Age), refer to the conflict as the Falklands/Malvinas War.
Even the so-called WINNERS (are actually winners in war?) recognize manytimes the Malvinas name.
The Malvinas/Falklands Air War was truly remarkable. The air to sea engagements were at a scale nobody had seen after WWII. The Argentinean aviators attacks were so ferocius that when the Argentinean commander met his British counterpart to arrange surrender, the first thing the British commander said was: "-You have to guarantee me that the Argentinean Aviation is surrendering too".
Another note about the IA-63 Pucara is that it saw battle in the "dirty war", in which the non-democratic military government fought pro-comunist guerrillas in the forests of Tucuman. This was during the 70's. I think it was an airplane designed for CAS.

Yeah, why not have Harrier jumpjets or Tomcats?
